Travel with a difference

The Tindersurfer

A. Faced with a final long summer between leaving university and starting his first job in marketing, Belgian Anthony
Botta planned to travel through eight different countries. However, he hit upon an idea that would give his travels
a unique twist. As he was already a user of the dating app Tinder, he decided that he would aim to stay only
with women who he matched with. While he admits that the idea did allow him to take a more frugal approach
to travelling, the aim was mostly about getting him out of his comfort zone and pushing him to meet different
people.

B. Ahead of each journey, Botta sets his Tinder location to his destination allowing him to virtually meet females
who live there. It helps considerably that he is able to speak five languages (French, Italian, English, Spanish and
Dutch) which gave him a greater number of possibilities as he made his way across Europe. He says his need to
find accommodation makes him less picky with his potential dates, though obviously he sees it as a bonus if he’s
able to find someone he’s attracted to. When he first started, he found a flaw in his plan in that he was spending
hours on Tinder explaining his situation to various women. He dealt with this by documenting his journey on
YouTube and when a woman he matched with showed initial interest, he would send them a link to his channel.
His need to find accommodation meant that he had to get to the point and was unable to waste time on small
talk. Reactions to his plans were mixed and ranged from rejection, insults and deleted matches, to some ladies
accepting his proposal before they’d even had a conversation.

C. All in all, Botta stayed with 21 hosts during his European journey and found the experience largely positive. Once
a woman had offered to host him, he didn’t turn her down, although he suspects he should have on occasion. He
said his worst encounter was in Poland with a Portuguese lady who told him that she lived just a few minutes from
the station, but it turned out to be much much further and he walked at least 30 minutes in the heat. Arriving
soaked in sweat from carrying his backpack, he asked to shower but wasn’t able to do so immediately because,
due to the tiny size of the apartment, that was where she did the dishes. When he finally was able to get in there,
the drain was clogged with a large ball of hair.

D. At the other end of the spectrum of experience was an Italian woman called Giulia, who appeared in the third
episode of his YouTube channel. They’d planned to spend a day together, but they got on so well, it turned into
four. Botta contemplated staying longer, but having promised himself that he’d do a long trip, knew that, sadly,
he’d have to leave. He’s been coy about how many of the matches resulted in sex, maintaining that the truth
wouldn’t be believed. - sources: worldcrunch.com, metro.co.uk, independent.co.uk, critic.co.nz
