The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences

(NUJS), established in 1999, is renowned for its academic

excellence and commitment to inclusivity, making it one of
India's top law schools. The university offers a range of
undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs and has
built a strong reputation not only for its rigorous legal
education but also for its efforts to create an accessible
environment for all students, including those with disabilities.
In addition to its academic achievements, NUJS is committed
to fostering an inclusive and competitive legal environment. It
has hosted Para-Invicta, a dedicated sports festival for
specially-abled students, alongside Invicta, its flagship law
sports festival, promoting equal opportunities. Beyond this,
NUJS has organized a wide range of Moot Court and
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) competitions, such as
the NUJS-HSF Moot Court Competition and the NUJS
ADR Mediation Competition.
These initiatives provide young lawyers with a
dynamic platform to engage with complex legal
issues, refine their advocacy and negotiation skills,
and compete against top law schools, helping
shape the next generation of legal professionals .

NUJS’s mission extends beyond academics,

aiming to promote a sense of responsibility
among its students and researchers to serve
society. The university’s inclusive ethos is
reflected in initiatives like Para-Invicta, which
aligns with the values of advocacy, legal service,
and societal development. Through these efforts,
NUJS strives to create an environment where
students of all abilities can thrive, not only in the
field of law but also in all areas of life. The
university’s inclusive approach and its
commitment to supporting specially-abled
students make NUJS a beacon of accessibility
and social responsibility in legal education.
ABOUT THE MOOT

The Disability Law Moot Court Competition is

envisioned as a national level platform for law
students to engage deeply with legal issues
affecting persons with disabilities. Given that
India has one of the largest populations of PWDs,
this initiative seeks to bridge the gap in disability
law education and nurture future advocates for
disability rights.
Through simulated court proceedings, students will analyze
contemporary legal challenges in disability law, such as access to
justice, workplace discrimination, and constitutional protections for
PWDs. The competition will also provide a platform for legal debate,
fostering legal research, advocacy, awareness.
The moot will follow a standard format, with
multiple rounds judged by legal professionals,
academics, and experts in disability law. The
competition is expected to strengthen
institutional linkages, encourage collaboration
between law and disability rights organizations,
and promote the development of legal experts
in this growing field.
Beyond being an academic exercise, the
Disability Law Moot Court Competition has
the potential to create lasting awareness and
impact, paving the way for better legal representation and
policy improvements for persons with disabilities.
Disability laws safeguard the rights and dignity of
persons with disabilities (PWDs), ensuring their full
participation in society. In India, the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPWD Act)
guarantees rights in education, employment, and
accessibility, aligning with the United Nations
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
(UNCRPD). Despite these legal protections, gaps in
enforcement and public awareness limit their real-
world impact, making effective implementation
crucial.
A major issue is workplace discrimination and accessibility. The
RPWD Act mandates reasonable accommodations and inclusive
workplaces, yet many lack accessible infrastructure and hiring policies.
Similarly, inclusive education is
hindered by a shortage of trained
faculty and learning materials. Another
key concern is access to justice, as
PWDs face physical barriers,
lack assistive technologies, and struggle with inadequate legal aid.
Strengthening legal literacy, specialized aid services, and advocacy
can help bridge these gaps.
Globally, disability rights are central to human rights law, with
growing focus on accessibility and inclusion. India must enhance
legal frameworks and institutional support to match international
progress. Public awareness, media representation, and initiatives like
moot court competitions can equip future legal professionals, driving
reforms for a more inclusive society.
The NUJS National Disability Law Moot Court
Competition seeks to create a platform where legal
intellect meets social consciousness. By
encouraging nuanced advocacy and in-depth
exploration of disability rights, the competition
aspires to inspire a new generation of lawyers
committed to building a more inclusive and
equitable legal system.
Guided by the belief that every disability is not
visible, we aim to highlight the often-overlooked
dimensions of disability law and foster dialogue
that transcends the courtroom.
