Questions & answers:

1) Why did the mob attack the Bastille?


Because it represented injustice & oppression. They attacked it :
a) to free the prisoners who were imprisoned without accusation or trial.
b) to destroy the records which had the names of the prisoners
c) to destroy the instruments of torture

2) What did Defarge do when the Bastille was taken?


When the Bastille was taken, Defarge grabbed one of the guards & made him show him the
secret cell 105, North Tower.

3 What did Defarge discover in the secret cell?


He saw the letters A.M. on one of the walls. Inside the chimney, he found some papers which he had
hidden.

Questions & answers:

1) Why was Mr. Lorry going to Paris? Who was going with him?
Mr. Lorry was going to Paris because there was so uneasiness & property to London. There were also
important papers & documents that Jerry Cruncher was going with him to protect or hide as it was
impossible to get them out of London.

2) Both Mr. Lorry & Charles Darnay decided to go Paris but for different reasons. Discuss
a) Mr. Lorry decided to go to Paris because there was so uneasiness & property to London & also to
protect or hide some important papers & documents as it was impossible to get them out of London.
b) Darnay decided to go to Paris to save the life of his faithful servant, Gabelle & to defend his honour &
clear his good name.

3) "Emigrants have no rights." Comment


The officer said that to Charles Darnay when Darnay told him that he was a free citizen who Came to
Paris on his free will to save the life of a friend (his servant Gabelle) but the officer told him that he was
an emigrants who had no right.

4) "Many other people have been put in prison unjustly too." Comment
M. Defarge said that to Darnay when Charles asked him if he would be left in La Force prison without
trial. M. Defarge was referring to Dr. Manette who had been buried in a worse prison for 18 years
without trial.

Questions & answers:

1) Why did Lucie & her father come to Paris?


They came after Charles who had come to Paris to help & old servant. Dr. Manette was so worried
about Darnay & was aware of the danger he might face because he was one of the nobles. When he
learned that Charles was in prison, he decided to use his power as an ex- Bastille prisoner & save him.

2) What were the messages carried by M. Defarge?


M. Defarge carried two messages: one for Mr. Lorry from Dr. Manette telling him that Darnay
was well & asked him to allow M. Defarge to see Lucie because he had a message from Charles
to Lucie.
The second message was to Lucie herself from Charles in which he told her that her father had
influence & that he would save his life. He added that he was well & asked her to be brave & to
kiss Little Lucie for him.

3) What was Dr. Manette's position in the prisons? How did this position enable him to comfort Lucie?
He was an inspecting doctor of La Force Prison. This position enabled him to see Charles weekly &
bring messages to her & was able to assure her that her husband was quite well & safe.

Questions & answers:

1) How did Sidney Carton force Barsad to help him?


Sidney Carton told Barsad that he knew that he was a police spy. He knew that he was using a false
name; he was in the service of the English Government. Sidney threatened Barsad of reporting him to
the nearest Republic committee if he did not help him in saving Darnay.

2) "Seeing him once will not save him from death."


Mr. Lorry said that to Carton when Mr. Lorry asked him about the arrangements which he had made
with Barsad. Charles answered him if it went badly with Charles, he would be able to see him. Then Mr
Lorry commented that seeing Charles wouldn't save him from death.

1) What was Darnay accused of & by whom?


He was accused openly of being an enemy of the Republic, a nobleman & a member of a family guilty of
horrible cruelty to the people. He was accused by M. Defarge, Madame Defarge & Dr. Manette.

2) What was the people's reaction after the paper had been read? What was the verdict?
After the paper had been read in the court, the people cried for the blood of Evermondes. The verdict
was to be put to death on the guillotine within 24 hours.
