Jesus saw a blind man as he walked.
His disciples asked, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his
parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “He
John 9 : 1 - 12 was born blind so God’s works might be revealed to him.”
He said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of
the world.
He spat on the mud and spread it on the
blind man’s eyes, asking him to wash in
the pool of Siloam.
The blind man did as he was told.
People who had seen him as a beggar asked how he gained his sight.
He told them ‘the man named Jesus’ spread mud on his eyes and told
him to wash in Siloam.
The Pharisees investigate the healing
Chapter 9
Verses 13--34
The blind man could see again
People brought him to the Pharisees, where he explained how it happened.
The Pharisees diagreed over the matter- some called Jesus a sinner, while others argued that sinners wouldn’t
be able to perform miracles.
The blind man told them Jesus was a prophet.
They called the blind man’s parents to confirm that he was their son, which they did.
However, when asked how the miracle happened, they shook off the responsiblity for their son because they
were afraid of being put out of the synagogue.
The blind man once again affirmed what happened, and asks the Pharisees whether they want to become “the
man” (Jesus’)’s disciples since they are so interested in the matter.
They insulted him and said that they were disciples of Moses.
The blind man answered that God only listens to people who do his will, and therefore Jesus could not be a
sinner.
The Pharisees threw him out of the church.
Chapter 9
Verse 35-41
Spiritual Blindness
Jesus hears that the man He healed was kicked out by the Pharisees, so
He finds him and asks if he believes in the Son of Man. The man wants to
believe and asks who that is,Jesus tells him, “It’s Me,” and the man
believes and worships Him. Then Jesus says He came to help the blind see
and show those who think they see how blind they really are. The
Pharisees overhear and ask, “Are you saying we’re blind?” Jesus basically
tells them, “If you were really blind, you’d be innocent. But since you claim
to see, you’re guilty.”
It’s a wake-up call: thinking you know it all can actually blind you to the
truth.
The parable of the good shepherd
In these verses, the parable of the shepherd, a true shepherd
enters the sheephold through the gate and a thief or robber
climbs in another way. The sheep recognise the shepherd’s voice
and follow him but they flee from a stranger.
Jesus said “I am the gate for the sheep”
All others who came before me are thieves and
robbers. Whoever comes in by me will be saved. He
then says, “I am the good shepherd”, who is willing to
die for his sheep. He knows his followers personally just
as he knows the Father and the Father knows him.
Jesus is rejected
In these verses, Jesus is at the Festival of Dedication (Hanukkah) in
Jerusalem. The Jewish leaders ask Him to clearly say if He is the Messiah.
Jesus replies that He has already shown who He is through His words and
miracles, but they don’t believe because they are not His “sheep.” He
explains that His sheep listen to Him, He knows them, and He gives them
eternal life.
Jesus then makes a powerful statement: “I and the Father
are one.” The Jewish leaders think this is blasphemy because
He, a man, claims to be God. They try to stone Him, but
Jesus reminds them that He’s doing good works from the
Father. He also refers to Scripture to explain that calling
Himself the Son of God is not blasphemy.
Despite their anger, they can’t arrest him, and Jesus leaves.
Many people across the Jordan believe in him because of
his teachings and miracles
