TOPIC: Why don’t people have access to clean water?

ANALYSIS
I am going to attempt to explain and reason on why don’t all people have access to clean water.
It is devastating to know that not everyone has access to safe water. As a result, every year
3.575 million people die due to complications of diseases related to drinking unclean and unsafe
water. When people without access to purified water they resort to drinking from contaminated
water sources.
One of the advantages of clean water is to help prevent water borne illness example cholera,
dysentery, typhoid and polio. Drinking contaminated water could lead to these diseases.
Millions of people die every year as a direct result of water borne illness.
GLOBAL APPROACHES
Over 4.4 billion people across low- and middle-income countries – over half of the world’s
population don’t have access to clean and safe water. One of these causes are climate change.
Climate change refers to long term shifts in temperature and weather patterns. Such shifts can
be natural due to the changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruption.
But since the 1800’s human activities have been the main driver of climate change primarily
due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas, burning of trees to get firewood etc. Saudi
Arabia as one of the largest oil producers globally, Saudi Arabia primarily uses oil for electricity
and desalination. The economy is reliant on oil exports, though the country is beginning to
invest in renewable energy projects.
LOCAL APPROCHES
My local approach is based on my home country Tanzania. In Tanzania limited access to clean
water is a significant challenge, especially in rural areas where communities often rely on
untreated surface water or shallow wells that are susceptible to contamination. One of these
local factors affecting water acres in Tanzania is Economic limitations.
Various economic factors have been challenging my country Tanzania, to an extent that it has
actually made it difficult for the local government to invest in water infrastructure. Budgets are
so low in many communities that the treatment facilities and pipes are lacking which impacts
the quality and reach of the water supply.

SELF APPROACH
In my view it is very difficult to explain why people cannot have access to clean water. It’s a
factor emerging from a bundle of complex reasons. These include aspects touching economic,
geographical, political and social spheres. Access to clean water is a basic human right, but to
billions of people it remains as good as a mirage especially in low income and rural
communities. It is a complex problem which requires not only a global but also a coordinated
effort at the level of each particular settlement.
The solution will include not only improving the infrastructure but also fighting against poverty,
lack of education and unsustainability of the environment. We need to take bigger leaps
towards a world where clean water means something to everyone through investing more in
community-driven solutions, awareness, and policy strengthening to protect water resources.

PROBLEM SOLVING
Personally, in this topic I think people should be more educated on why clean water is
important. Though clean water is given at a limited access. I personally feel that they should try
to improve the limited access of clean water around the world. The communities and
organizations dealing with water infrastructure should utilize their media and technology
meaning they should try spreading the information through social media. Educating one person
can benefit many.
If these organizations don’t work with technology or social media, they should at least try to
spread the information through news programs, newspapers, reports etc. Informing people
around them could at least save thousands of people every year.
Improving the water infrastructure, water treatment facility building and upgrading investment
in treatment plans must be made, also upgrading the already existing infrastructure to make
sure communities have safe and clean water.
Providing access to affordable solution options in relation to water treatment, low-cost
filtration, tools such as ceramic or sand filter. These tools are particularly useful in households
where clean water is not available.

EVALUATION
The source is balanced. The water aid company (www.wateraid.com) its website showed the
importance of water and its benefits. The company deals with water over Africa it helps build
wells and provide clean water to schools that do not have access to clean and safe water. This
company is professionally based on clean water so the information they gave was helpful in my
research.
The UN is and organization that deals with different sectors example children’s rights, human
rights, food etc. Luckily the organization made a website easy for me to look through and check
the information they gave out. The information was well explained and easy to understand.
