Bullying leads to a decrease in academic performance. A study by CDC researchers showed
that 12.9% of teenagers who missed school due to safety concerns feared bullying.
Victims of bullying may also avoid participating in class for fear of drawing attention to
themselves and getting bullied. They may then become labelled as low achievers, putting them at
an even higher risk of being targeted by bullies.
Like all forms of bullying, physical bullying can cause emotional change. It makes the
victims feel unconfident and think less of themselves. This leads to feelings of shame, isolation, and
despair. Moreover, the child may lose interest in playing or activities they previously enjoyed and
engage in harmful behaviour, such as self-harm. These actions lead to more negative feelings and
thoughts, creating a self-destructive cycle. In victims with existing depression and anxiety, bullying
can make these conditions worse. Besides the physical injuries, victims may get from the attacks,
they may also develop health issues, such as somatization. Somatization includes physical
symptoms caused by psychological or emotional factors. For instance, the child may complain
about headaches, body pain, or tiredness.

[PART 1. Questions 39-42: Listen to a talk about bullying. Decide whether the following
statements are True or False. You will listen TWICE. Before you begin, you will have some
time to read through the questions. Now, listen to the recording and choose the answer.]
A new study says that [39] children who are bullied by other kids could have mental health
problems when they are adults. The study found that bullied children are more likely to suffer
from depression and anxiety in adulthood than children who suffered child abuse. [40]
Researchers found that the children who experienced only bullying were 1.6 times more likely
than those who experienced only child abuse to have mental health problems or to have tried
to harm themselves. Researcher Dr Dieter Wolke said society often thinks bullying is a normal
part of childhood. He said: "Being bullied is not a harmless rite of passage or an inevitable
part of growing up; [40] it has serious long-term consequences."
Bullying is a big problem around the world. [40] In Britain, about 16,000 children stay at
home and do not go to school because they are often bullied. Their exam results suffer and so
do their chances of going to university or getting good jobs. [40] Bullied children may also
suffer from other problems. They can have serious illnesses, an inability to focus on one thing
for a long time, poor social skills, and have trouble holding down a job or staying in a
relationship. Catherine Bradshaw, an expert on youth violence, said parents and schools
needed to do more about recognising and preventing bullying. She said parents needed to
teach their children how to communicate well with other children. [Now listen again]
[This is the end of Part 1. You will have some time to complete your answer. Now turn into Part
2.]
[PART 2. Questions 43-46: Listen to the conversation between Thomas and Yen about Quan
Ho singing and complete each of the sentences with ONE word. You will listen to the
recording TWICE. Before you begin, you will have some time to read through the sentences.
Now, listen to the recording and write the answer.]
Thomas: It’s strange to see leaves falling in spring. But the trees without leaves give us a
better view of that ancient building.
Yen: Yeah. It’s a community house. Do you hear anything in the air?
Thomas: Oh, yes. I can hear some sweet voices. It’s like they’re coming from that
community house. And now there are some female voices, too. Are people singing?
Yen: Yes, they’re singing Quan Ho in teams.
Thomas: Quan Ho? What does it mean? The way they sing and the music don’t sound
familiar to me.
Yen: It’s a type of traditional music. Young men and women often sing in pairs or
groups.
Thomas: Oh, Let’s go and see.
Yen: Sure. This is a part of Viet Nam’s cultural heritage I’d love to introduce to you
today.
Thomas: Great. Oh, people are gathering around a pond. Wow, the singers are standing on
board, singing attentively. What a unique theatre!
Yen: Yeah. It’s really practical and romantic, too. The singing festival doesn’t just
happen during the day; groups of singers often travel to different small villages and
perform at night.
Thomas: I don’t understand any single words, but I do feel the sweet sound of love and
appreciation.
Yen: You’re right. The songs are generally about love, nature, and our country.
Thomas: Let’s get closer to the water. I want to check out those singers and musicians up
close. Their costumes are elegant, and their faces are lit up with joy…
