Another Frequent Question
Back in the days when I was consulting full time, a frequent question
that came up in consultations, especially from men in India, was whether
they could “do business.” By this they meant could they be in business for
themselves versus in the service of others as an employee. Such a question
begs the further one of what astrological factors in a birth chart indicate the
potential for being a successful entrepreneur. Since at that time I had not
really researched this myself, I relied on the researches of others for
predictive parameters. Colonel A.K. Gour, a senior faculty member at K.N.
Rao’s school in Delhi, published the second edition of his book Astrology of
Professions in 2007 in which he has a chapter entitled Self-Employment or
Service. There he gives seven principles for determining service versus self-
employment. I am directly quoting these in total here along with his
commentary out of an awareness that these came directly from K.N. Rao and
his researches on this topic.

Seven Principles

1. Number of planets between 7th to 12th houses and/or 10th to 3rd

houses.

Concentration of planets around the ascendant or the 10th house

strengthens them because it is a well-established principle that planets three
houses away on either side adjacent to it are tatkalik mitra (temporary
friends) and render considerable strength. Concentration of planets in 7th to
12th or 10th to 3rd houses strengthen the 10th house and Lagna respectively.
This is the first pointer towards self-confidence for an individual who would
like to follow an independent path rather than a conventional beaten track.
Therefore, an individual whose horoscope has 5 or more planets in 7th to 12th
houses or 10th to 3rd houses is likely to be self-employed.

But in cases where the above conditions are fulfilled yet an individual is
found to be in service due to influence of Saturn, dasha sequence, strength
of 6th house/6th lord etc. Then such an individual is expected to be at a very
high post in his particular profession where he would be required to take
independent decisions.

2. Poorna Paramatmamsa Planets

The epic Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes Sun, Moon, Mars
and Rahu as “poorna paramatmamsa planets” Whereas Mercury, Jupiter,
Venus, Saturn and Ketu are called “jeevamsa samanvit planets.” It is very
significant that the dasha sequence of the four poorna paramatmamsa
planets follows in a continuous sequence. i.e. Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu.

PAC influence (connection by position, aspect or conjunction) of these

poorna paramatmamsa planets on the lagna and lagna lord strengths the
lagna and in turn increases the independence in an individual. Similarly,
PAC influence of these group of planets on the 10th house/10th lord will give
independence to the vocation or profession and the individual is more likely
to be self-employed.
 3. Saturn and its influence on the 10th house and 10th lord, and the
Sun and the Moon.

Before we discuss the influence of Saturn let us describe two other

important astrological definitions. i.e. gocharastha and agocharastha. Saturn
in exaltation sign, own house and not related to the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses is
called gocharastha and is likely to give benefic results. While debilitated,
eclipsed, Saturn lost in a planetary war, combust or related to 6th, 8th, or 12th
houses is called agocharastha or malefic Saturn. In our further deliberations
it would be better to remember these two terminologies.

PAC of agocharastha Saturn with the Moon, Sun, 10th lord and 10th
house is likely to give service to an individual unless Saturn is yogakāraka.
However, PAC influence of gocharastha Saturn on the Moon, Sun, 10th lord
and 10th house is more likely to veer an individual towards self-employment.

It is very important to see the position of Saturn in navamsha and

dashamsha chart also. It has been observed that if Saturn is agocharastha in
the birth chart and it becomes gocharastha in navamsha and dashamsha
chart then an individual who is in service may go for self-employment as per
the dictates of the dasha system.

4. Strength of the 6th house/6th lord vis a vis the lagna/lagna lord

The 6th house is the house of service or bondage. If the 6th house or the
6th lord is stronger than the lagna/lagna lord, an individual would likely go
for service or a profession where he/she will have to serve under someone.

5. Dhana Yogas

Dhana yogas are astrological combinations for wealth and prosperity and
contribute towards the financial prosperity of an individual. 2nd and 11th
houses are the houses of wealth and gains respectively. The house 5th and 9th
are called “Lakshmi Sthanas.” An interaction of these 4 houses and their
lords produce dhana yogas. Individuals who tend to be self-employed would
like to earn a much as possible whereas, such abundant scope would not be
seen in a horoscope tending towards services. A service holder would be
limited to his/her salary only. Therefore, it is very important to have strong
dhana yogas in the case of self-employed individuals.

6. PAC of the 3rd house/3rd lord with the 9th and 10th houses or
lords.

The 3rd house i.e. parakram sthāna and its significator Mars signifies
self-efforts and hard work while the 9th and 10th houses are bhagya (fortune)
and karma sthāna (worldly activity) respectively. Comparatively, in self
employment one needs to be more independent and hardworking than in the
case of service person. Self-employed individuals would have to make many
aggressive decisions and be competitive. When there is a relationship 3rd
house, 3rd lord with 9th house/9th lord and/or the 10th house/10th lord an
individual is more likely to self-employed.

7. Indu lagna and Indu lagna lord

Another method of working out the extent of prosperity of a person is to

determine the Indu lagna in the natal chart and see the disposition of plants
from it. An unblemished benefic or an exalted malefic in the Indu lagna
strengths the Indu lagna and makes one a multi-millionaire according to
classical texts. Ordinary malefic influence on the Indu lagna leads to
ordinary financial status. Powerful Indu lagna and Indu lagna lord denote
wealth as important indicator of business leading to self-employment.

Analysis of any horoscope is not complete without an analysis of the

navamsha. If the positions of planets improve significantly in the navamsha
as compared to the rashi chart it indicates upward growth and an individual
who is likely to be well placed in whatever profession he is engaged in.

Basic guiding factor to distinguish between horoscopes of a self-

employed versus a service holder will be the degree of independence present
in the horoscope and this must be carefully assessed before a prediction is
made.

I have chosen to include verbatim this long passage from Colonel Gour’s
book to highlight that the predictive paraments given in this article are
mostly not my original researches but those of K.N. Rao and his
faculty/students. That said, I have examined charts of many successful
entrepreneurs and have some of my own observations, one of which is that it
appears to me that connections of the 3rd house/3rd lord to the lagna/lagna
lord, not just the 9th and 10th houses and their lords, can incline a person
towards entrepreneurship.

As always, my approach here is empirical. It is based on the premise that

by examining the charts of successful entrepreneurs, and in particular the
periods they were running when they became so, one should be able to
identify the relevant astrological factors. I propose to do this using the charts
of 10 famous entrepreneurs, as well as a number drawn from my own case
files. Whereas the emphasis will be on testing the predictive parameters laid
out in Colonel Gour’s book, any other factors that appear relevant will also
be highlighted.
Bill Gates
One of the most famous and successful entrepreneurs of the modern era
is, of course, Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft. His entrepreneurial vision
was of a world in which everyone, whether at work or at home, had a
personal computer on their desk running the Microsoft operating system and
Microsoft application software. To what degree he realized this vision is
truly astonishing, and it made him at times the wealthiest man in the world.
The dhana yogas in his chart have been too often discussed, so my focus
here will be the degree to which his chart exhibits the predictive parameters
outlined above.

• His chart does not exhibit the cluster of planets in houses adjacent to
either the 1st house or the 10th house (1st parameter), but it should be
noted that the 10th house containing his Moon, the 2nd lord of wealth,
is the focal point of his powerful Candra Adhi Yoga, a signature
feature of his birth chart. The central idea behind this yoga is that
natural benefics aspect the Moon and the houses on either side of the
Moon. In this case, an exalted lagna lord Mercury aspects the Moon
from 7 away and Jupiter and Venus aspect the houses on either side
of the Moon. In total, the 10th house and the houses on either side of
it (9 and 11) have the influence of 7 out of 9 grahas. Only the Rahu-
Ketu axis is not involved.

• With respect to the 2nd parameter, pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets

connected to 1 or 10, the Moon is in the 10th house, waxing and
nearly full, and Mars is conjunct the lagna lord and aspecting the 10th
house.

• There is no influence of Saturn on the 10th house, 10th lord, or the

Moon suggesting service (3rd parameter), though Saturn does
conjunct the Sun.
 • The lagna lord, giving Bhadra Yoga from both the birth lagna and
the Moon, is stronger than the 6th lord Mars, with whom it is
conjunct (4rd parameter).

• There are spectacular dhana yogas (5th parameter).

• The 10th lord Jupiter goes to the 3rd house aspecting the 9th house (6th
parameter). Natural significator of the 3rd house, Mars, is conjunct
the lagna lord.

Bill Gates’ Indu lagna is Virgo, containing an exalted benefic who is the
Indu lagna lord. Then examine the 2nd house of wealth from there and the
quality of dhana yoga formed by exalted 5th lord Saturn and 2nd and 9th lord
Venus (7th parameter).

Gates dropped out of Harvard to start Microsoft: From Wikipedia:

“Gates read the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics which

demonstrated the Altair 8800, and he contacted Micro Instrumentation and
Telemetry Systems (MITS) to inform them that he and others were working
on a BASIC interpreter for the platform. In reality, Gates and Allen did not
have an Altair and had not written code for it; they merely wanted to gauge
MITS’s interest. MITS president Ed Roberts agreed to meet them for a
demonstration, and over the course of a few weeks they developed an Altair
emulator that ran on a minicomputer, and then the BASIC interpreter. The
demonstration was held at MITS’s offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico it
was a success and resulted in a deal with MITS to distribute the interpreter
as Altair Basic MITS hired Allen, and Gates took a leave of absence from
Harvard to work with him at MITS in November 1975. Allen named their
partnership “Micro-Soft”, a combination of “microcomputer” and
“software”, and their first office was in Albuquerque. They dropped the
hyphen within a year and officially registered the trade name “Microsoft”
with the Secretary of the State of New Mexico on November 26, 1976. Gates
never returned to Harvard to complete his studies.”

These events took place at the very end of his Mercury-Saturn period,
but it was really in his Ketu period, followed by Venus, that Gates became
such a successful entrepreneur. His Ketu is in the 8th house, but in the 3rd
from the Moon. Since it is not conjunct or aspected by any planets it gives
the results of its sign lord, Venus, and nakṣatra lord, Mars. Venus, of course,
is configured in a Lakṣmī Yoga, but is also a component of the Candra Adhi
Yoga. Significantly in my view, it is also the 3rd lord from the Moon and
involved in a full Viparīta Rāja Yoga from Candra lagna, in which all three
Trik lords are together in a Trik house.

Ross Perot is another computer industry entrepreneur who became a

multi-billionaire after initially being a top salesman for IBM. From
Wikipedia:

“Born and raised in Texarkana, Texas, Perot became a salesman for IBM
after serving in the United States Navy. In 1962, he founded Electronic Data
Systems, a data processing service company. In 1984, General Motors
bought a controlling interest in the company for $2.4 billion.”

• His ascendant has a tremendous emphasis, the focal point of a

powerful Bheri Yoga, highlighted by the benefic flanking of the
lagna, three grahas in the lagna and the aspect of another from the
7th house. Six out of nine grahas are involved.

• Two of the pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets, Sun and Moon, are in the
lagna and are conjunct the 10th lord.

• In his case, there is the influence of Saturn on both the lagna and the
10th lord, and the Sun and Moon. He was in employment for a period
of time, but only briefly. Is this a gocharastha Saturn? It gets
 directional strength in the rāśi and is strong by virtue of a
parivartana yoga in the navāṁśa.

• His 6th house/6th lord is strong, since the lord, Mars, is svakṣetra and
aspects its own 6th house, but it not as strong as the lagna for the
aforementioned reasons.

• I will leave it to the reader to see all the dhana yogas in his chart, but
highlight in particular the 5th lord Venus in the 2nd house. It was just
after moving into his Venus major period that he sold a controlling
interest in Electronic Data Systems for $2.4 billion.

• His 3rd lord Sun is in the lagna conjunct the 10th lord, Jupiter.

• His Indu lagna is Cancer, containing the benefic Venus, a period

when he became extremely wealth.

Perot started EDS in 1962 in his Mercury-Ketu period activating the

Śubha Kartarī Yoga in his chart. Like Gates, he started his company in a
major period whose nakṣatra lord is Mars, and in his case, Mars is svakṣetra
in both the birth chart and the navāṁśa.
F.W. Woolworth
He was an American entrepreneur, the founder of F.W. Woolworth
Company, and the operator of variety stores known as “Five-and-Dimes” (5-
and 10-cent stores) or dime stores, which featured a low-priced selection of
merchandise. He pioneered the now-common practices of buying
merchandise directly from manufacturers and fixing the selling prices on
items, rather than haggling. He was also the first to use self-service display
cases, so customers could examine what they wanted to buy without the help
of a sales clerk. From Wikipedia:

“Accounts on the conception of the five-and-dime differ. Scholar Gail

Fenske suggests that Woolworth had heard of a “five-cent counter craze”
while questioning his own sales ability at his first job. Jean Maddern Pitrone
suggests the idea was conceived after a travelling salesman told Woolworth
of stores with the five-cent counter concept in Michigan. Plunkett-Powell
suggests the concept was overheard by Woolworth during a discussion
between William Moore and a young man who had opened his own cut-rate
goods store. Regardless of how it was brought about, it is clear that this
concept would become the most profound key to Woolworth’s success and
would change his life and retailing as well.

Woolworth borrowed $300 and opened a five-cent store in Utica, New

York, on February 22, 1879. It failed within weeks. Woolworth opened his
second store in April 1879, in Lancaster Pennsylvania, where he expanded
the concept to include merchandise priced at ten cents.”

By 1911, Woolworth had built a retail empire consisting of 586 stores.

• Six of nine grahas fall in the 10th to 3rd house including three in the
lagna which are aspected by Jupiter. Consider the yogas formed by
these as they include an exalted vargottama 5th lord Sun, the 10th lord
Saturn giving nīcabhaṅga rāja yoga, and the 9th lord Jupiter.

• Three of the four pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets are related to the

ascendant. The Sun is in the lagna, Mars rules the lagna, and the
Moon is in a mutual glance with lagna lord. Two of these, the Sun
and Moon, are also related to the 10th house since the Moon occupies
it and the Sun is conjunct the 10th lord Saturn.

• Saturn is connected to both the 10th house and the 1st house, and to
the Sun and the Moon. Woolworth was an employee of stores before
establishing his own, but only for a brief time.

• His 6th lord does get directional strength but the lagna/lagna lord is
considerably stronger and more prominent.

• High quality dhana yogas are readily apparent in his chart. The Sun-
Saturn-Jupiter combination is that of the 5th lord, 11th lord, and 9th
lord. His 2nd house of wealth has its lord, Venus, svakṣetra and
 vargottama. It was in his Jupiter major period disposited by Venus
that he first made his fortune.

• His 3rd lord Mercury, getting directional strength, is connected to the

1st house and the 9th and 10th lords.

• His Indu lagna is Gemini, containing a mūlatrikoṇa Rahu, but see the
5-11 axis from there and how the 11th lord goes to the 2nd house.

Woolworth first became a retail store entrepreneur in 1879 in his Jupiter-

Saturn period, with these grahas forming a 9-10 rāja yoga, and with both
connected to a strong 3rd lord.
Walt Disney
Walt Disney created one of the most famous and successful brands of all
time in the entertainment industry. From Wikipedia:

“Born in Chicago in 1901, Disney developed an early interest in

drawing. He took art classes as a boy and got a job as a commercial
illustrator at the age of 18. He moved to California in the early 1920s and
set up the Disney Brothers Studio with his brother Roy. With Ub Iwerks, Walt
developed the character Mickey Mouse in 1928, his first highly popular
success; he also provided the voice for his creation in the early years. As the
studio grew, Disney became more adventurous, introducing synchronized
sound, full-color three-strip Technicolor feature cartoons and technical
developments in cameras. The results, seen in features such as Snow White
and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio, Fantasia (both 1940), Dumbo
(1941), and Bambi (1942), furthered the development of animated film. New
animated and live-action films followed after World War II, including the
critically successful Cinderella (1950) and Mary Poppins (1964), the latter
of which received five Academy Awards.

In the 1950s, Disney expanded into the amusement park industry, and in
1955 he opened Disneyland. To fund the project, he diversified into
television programs, such as Walt Disney’s Disneyland and The Mickey

• His chart does not show a preponderance of planets in houses from

7th to 12th or 10th to 3rd.

• It does show a connection of pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets to 1 and

10. The Moon is in the lagna, the Sun is conjunct the 1st and 10th
lord, Mercury, and Mars aspects the 10th house.
 • Saturn does have a connection by aspect to both the Moon and the
10th house. Like many entrepreneurs he went from initial
employment to self-employment.

• In this case the lagna/lagna lord is not clearly stronger than the 6th
house/6th lord.

• Dhana yogas are evident. The 11th lord is in the lagna and Venus as
the 2nd and 9th lord goes to the 5th house, while the 5th lord is in an
angle with svakṣetra Jupiter. Both Venus and Saturn have an
exceptional dignity in the navāṁśa since both go into their exaltation
signs.

• There is both a 1-3 and 3-10 connection since the 1st and 10th lord,
Mercury, is in the 3rd house in a Budhāditya Yoga with the Sun.

• His Indu lagna is Leo, receiving the aspect of a svakṣetra Jupiter and
from where the 5-11 axis contains dhana yogas.

Since so many of my students reading my articles are from India, I
wanted to include at least one Indian entrepreneur, but had difficulty finding
any with reliable birth data. This chart of G.D. Birla is the one used at Shri
Rao’s school, which I am presuming is accurate but have not verified it
myself. He was a hugely successful entrepreneur, who after inheriting the
family business, went on to build a diversified commercial/industrial empire.

• Presuming this chart is correct, 5 of 9 grahas are within houses 10th

to the 3rd and four are either in or adjacent to the lagna.

• As for connections of pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets to 1 and 10,

Saturn has the connection to Rahu as the lagna lord, and Mars is an
exalted 10th lord in a mutual glance with the Moon, forming Candra-
Maṅgala Yoga.

• Saturn is the lagna lord but there is no connection of Saturn to the

Having now discussed the chart of five famous male entrepreneurs, I will
now give famous women entrepreneurs their due.
Coco Chanel
The life of this French fashion designer is a classic tale of “rags to
riches.” She was left in a convent orphanage at age 12, abandoned by her
itinerant peddler dad whom she never saw again. From this humble
beginning, she went on to create one of the most successful fashion design
brands in the world. From Wikipedia:

“The founder and namesake of the Chanel brand, she was credited in the
post-World War I era with liberating women from the constraints of the
“corseted silhouette” and popularizing a sporty, casual chic as the feminine
standard of style. A prolific fashion creator, Chanel extended her influence
beyond couture clothing, realizing her design aesthetic in jewelry, handbags
and fragrance. Her signature scent, Chanel No.5 has become an iconic

Her birth time does come from a birth certificate, but like most 19th
century recorded birth times it is rounded to the hour. It gives a Sagittarius

Chanel’s life as an entrepreneur appears have begun when she opened a

hat shop in Paris. From Wikipedia:

hugely successful entrepreneur, amassing a fortune of nearly 3 billion.

• Seven grahas occupy houses 10 through 3.

• Among the pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets, Mars is the lagna lord in

the lagna giving Rucaka Yoga. It is joined by the Moon, giving
Candra Maṅgala Yoga, and aspected by Jupiter, giving Gaja Kesarī
Yoga. This combination of Mars, Jupiter and the Moon form
spectacular dhana yogas as they all rule the Lakṣmī sthāna houses, 1,
5, and 9. The Sun rules the 10th house and it is with Rahu.

• It is only through a close kendra sambandha that her exalted Saturn

gets connected to the Sun, who is the 10th lord.

• The 1st house is very obviously more prominent than the 6th house.

• The dhana yogas have already been outlined.

• Her 3rd house is quite pronounced with four grahas, including the
10th lord Sun, and her 3rd lord is exalted.

Dhana yogas do form from this lagna, but except for Saturn as an

It is difficult to say exactly when Oprah became an entrepreneur, but the

start-up of her magazine was certainly significant this way. From Wikipedia:

comes from a birth certificate. The site has this apt description of her:

7. Strong Indu lagna/lagna lord

I consider this predictive parameter to be different than the others in that

it is not so much an indicator of self-employment versus service as it is an
additional means for assessing wealth potentials. In that respect, it is more
like an adjunct to #5 having to do with dhana yogas. Creating wealth is a
goal of all entrepreneurs, aside from whatever other goal they might have in
creating an enterprise. In which case, the Indu lagna can be an additional
means of assessing this potential and might therefore be more of a predictive
parameter of entrepreneurial success.

Discussion
Being an empiricist and researcher at heart, whenever I am presented
with any astrological predictive principle, whether it be directly from some
teacher or as in this case from a book, I never accept it blindly, nor do I
reject it blindly. Rather I look for the opportunity to test it many times over
before incorporating it into by own predictive tool kit. These 10 charts are
just a small sample of the testing I have done on these predictive parameters,
and whereas it can be seen that they apply for the most part, some hold up
better than others.

• It is apparent from these charts that one can have the influence of an
agocarasthā Saturn on the 10th house/10th lord and/or the Sun and
Moon, and still be a hugely successful entrepreneur. In the context of
different charts, such contacts may indicate service/employment, but
they obviously don’t preclude self-employment.

• The influence of the Sun, Moon, Mars, and Rahu on the 1st house/1st
lord, or the 10th house/10th lord in multiple ways appears to be an
important indicator since this exists in all 10 charts. From these
examples, Mars appears to be the most reoccurring factor this way
and Rahu the least. Recall also that Mars is a natural significator of
the 3rd house.

• From these illustrations it is also apparent that connections between

the 3rd house/3rd lord and the 10th house/10th lord are a consistent
feature in all the charts. Four of 10 have the 10th lord in the 3rd, while
two have the 1st and 10th lord conjunct.
Non-Celebrity Examples
I will now discuss birth charts drawn from my own case files of
individuals who have consulted with me or students of mine who I know to
be successful entrepreneurs. I will leave it to the reader to do an assessment
of all seven factors should you feel so inclined and confine myself to
highlighting what I consider to be the most relevant and salient features.

Below is the chart of an Indian woman who after working in her

mother’s chemical company started her own in the Jupiter major period.
Jupiter is in the 3rd house with the 10th lord forming a 5-10 rāja yoga. Being
nīca while the lagna/lagna lord is strong, Jupiter may also give the unusual
rāja yoga formed by debilitated planets in dussthānas under such conditions.
Additionally, Jupiter is involved in a Gaurī Yoga defined by when the Moon
is svakṣetra or ucca in an angle or trine and gets the aspect of Jupiter, while
the 9th lord is strong. The latter is blemished by the malefic hemming of the
Moon (Pāpa Durudhara Yoga).

 This is the chart of an Indian man who in his Venus period, the 5th lord of
education, came to the USA to obtain a Master Degree in Business
Administration. Not long afterwards he started his own successful business
as Venus is also a yogakāraka 10th lord svakṣetra in the 10th house.

The interesting thing to see in his chart is the exalted 3rd lord in a kendra
sambandha with the 10th lord Venus and how these become “mutual co-
workers” as given in Pārāśara Horā and forming as a result an unusual type
of rāja yoga. (See my article Intimate Connections). Notice also that Venus
is in Jupiter’s nakṣatra. My point here is that he has started and operated his
successful business in the major period of the 10th lord connected to an
exalted 3rd lord who also aspects its own 3rd house.

The combination of the 9th lord Mercury in the 11th house with Mars, the
11th lord svakṣetra, is a dhana yoga. Is it blemished by the planetary war
between these two grahas? And is Venus blemished by the malefic hemming
of the 10th house?

This is the chart of a Russian man not yet 30 who is very entrepreneurial.
He owns and operates three yoga centers, along with some other ventures.
See the 3rd lord Saturn in the 1st house aspecting the 10th house, while two
pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets, Moon and Mars, also aspect the 10th house,
and in the case of Mars, the 10th lord. Note that the another pūrna
paramātmāṁśa, the Sun, is in a mutual aspect with the lagna lord, Jupiter, a
1-9, 4-9 combination giving both rāja and dhana yoga.

His entrepreneurial success has come in his Venus major period,

svakṣetra and vargottama as the 11th lord in the 11th house and in the
nakṣatra of Mars.

Below is the chart of one of the most entrepreneurial individuals that I

have ever encountered. He has been involved in a number of successful
start-ups. When the whole internet phenomenon was beginning in the mid-
1980s, he was among the first to start a magazine called Online Access that
served this burgeoning industry.

His chart features an exalted lagna lord in th 3rd house with Venus, a 1-7
rāja yoga combination. He first became an entrepreneur in his Jupiter major
period, svakṣetra in the 2nd house and with the 3rd lord, Saturn, with Saturn
exalted in D-9. This was followed by 19 years of Saturn during which he
was invovled in numerous start-ups, a few of which were successful enough
to make him quite affluent.

What is notable about him with his exalted lagna lord in the 3rd is his
entrepreneurial courage, the willingness to take risk with a lot on the line,
with the possibility of gaining a lot but also of losing everything. The pūrna
paramātmāṁśa planets, Sun, Moon, and Mars, all influence the 10th house,
with the 10th lord Sun vargottama and aspecting its own 10th house. The
Sun-Moon combination for Scorpio is the best rāja yoga.

The following chart is of an Indian man who has been involved in

starting a number of enterprises, mostly recently a highly successful
software firm that now has offices in Asia, Europe and the USA. Rucaka
Yoga forms in the 1st house, while the 10th lord Sun is exalted in the 6th
house conjunct a nīcabhaṅga 3rd lord Saturn, aspecting its own 3rd house.

Then see the dhana yogas formed by the 9th lord Moon in the 5th house
aspected by the 2nd and 5th lord, Jupiter in the 11th house. These are
enhanced by the exalted Venus, forming rāja yoga with the Moon and
Jupiter as well as Kesarī Yoga. Venus is his current major period, the 7th
lord. He started this software firm with partners.

The chart shown above is of another Indian gentleman living and

working in the USA who has been involved in initiating start-ups and is now
self-employed as a management consultant/executive coach. It features a
number of significant rāja yogas related to the 1st and 10th houses, capped
by the 1-10 exchange between the lagna lord Moon and yogakāraka 10th
lord Mars
 The pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets, Moon, Mars and Rahu are all related
to both the lagna and the 10th house. The 3rd lord Mercury is strong by virtue
of being in parivartana yoga but it is only related to the 10th house through
its nakṣatra lord, Moon. He has been an entrepreneur and/ or self-employed
in his Mars and Rahu periods.

Below is the chart of a very entrepreneurial woman but in a different

way than those shown thus far. She has not started companies but has been a
successful classical musical entrepreneur, so much so that she now teaches
this in the music school of a prestigious university.

What I would highlight in her chart this way is the 3rd lord Mars
svakṣetra in the 3rd house aspecting the 10th house. There is Sarasvatī Yoga
both from the birth lagna and the Moon, highlighted by an exalted Venus,
planet of music, who is also configured in notable rāja and dhana yogas.
Her first entrepreneurial venture came in her Rahu period, activating these
yogas, during which she developed, marketed, and performed a series of
very creative concerts aimed at educating children about classical music in
Germany quite successfully.

Lastly, I will show my own chart as an example of someone who has

been both employed and self-employed for about an even amount of time in
the sum total of my working life. Since 1998 I have been self-employed, first
as a management consultant and now as an astrological consultant, teacher
and author. Can you identify the factors in my chart, consistent with these
other examples, that show the inclination this way?

Note the strong 3rd lord and Sun conjunct the 1st and 10th lord Mercury,
while the 3rd lord Mars also aspects its own 3rd house.
Summation
In these last ten illustrations of entrepreneurs and/or self-employed
individuals I have not shown the applicability of all 7 predictive parameters
outlined in Colonel Gour’s book as before, but have only highlighted what I
see as being among the most important ones, factors that have almost
invariably been present in all the 20 charts discussed in this article. This is to
say the strength of the 3rd house/3rd lord and connections to the 10th
house/10th lord and the influence of the pūrna paramātmāṁśa planets Sun,
Moon, and Mars on the 1st house/1st lord, but especially the 10th house/10th
lord.

 In every one of these ten cases the 3rd house/ 3rd lord or both are strong.
Three charts have the 3rd lord svakṣetra in the 3rd house, and four have the
3rd lord aspecting the 3rd house. Two 3rd lords are in a parivartana yoga, one
is exalted in the rāśi, another in the navāṁśa, and one gets directional
strength in an angle.

2. Connections between the 3rd house/3rd lord and the 10th

house/10th lord

Only one of these charts did not show an overt 3-10 connection, but in
that case the 3rd lord is in the nakṣatra of a planet in the 10th house, a rather
indirect connection. Add the examples of the famous entrepreneurs and this
predictive parameter applies to 19 out of the 20 charts examined.

3. Influence of Sun, Moon, Mars on the 10th house/10th lord

This parameter did apply in all cases though is more pronounced in some
of these charts than others. Six out of ten have two or more of these pūrna
paramātmāṁśa planets influencing the 10th house. Two have all three of the
Sun, Moon and Mars influencing the 10th house/10th lord.

To this I would add that Mars in particular, influencing the 1st house/1st
lord, 10th house/10th lord, or ruling 1st and 10th appears to be an important
factor for entrepreneurship. Consider how often there has been a strong,
prominent Mars in the charts of all these entrepreneurs making such
connections. To succeed as an entrepreneur, you must be very driven and
Mars is the graha most exemplifying this trait.
Entrepreneurship
As a management consultant/executive coach my clientele consisted
mostly of small business owners/entrepreneurs with annual revenues less
than 10 million. They were all “doers” and “go getters” who were attracted
to starting businesses by the prospect of “being their own boss” and of
becoming wealthy. Most of them dreamed of growing their businesses to a
point where they could sell it at a huge profit and someday be independently
wealthy. A few did achieve this but they were more the exception than the
rule.

The statistics on business failures can be rather sobering. According to

the 2019 statistics of the Small Business Association, 30% of new
businesses fail during the first two years of being open, 50% during the first
five years and 66% during the first 10. Entrepreneurs/business owners
typically work an incredible number of hours. One business owner once said
to me that there was never an hour in a day, even on weekends or during
vacations, when he was not thinking or worrying about his business.

This is to say that entrepreneurship or self-employment is not for

everyone. It takes a certain kind of person with a particular character and
drive to succeed. You must be a risk taker, willing to bet on yourself. As an
astrologer I would also say that it takes a certain kind of karma as reflected
by particular factors in a birth chart. This article has been about identifying
some of those factors.
