The Queen’s dress
Mrs William is a dressmaker. Tonight, she was tired and had a headache. She
needed to bring a dress to the Queen for her birthday party, but she was
sick. Her daughter Sarah told her, “You rest Mum. I can bring it there!”
“No, honey, I can’t let you do that,” said Mrs William, “It’s a heavy dress, and
it’s such a long way to the palace. Besides, it’s starting to snow.”
“But I love snow,” Sarah insisted. Then she made her mother some tea with
lemon and honey and put more wood on the stove. After she had done that,
she put the dress in a big box.
“Dress warmly, honey,” Mrs William said in a weak voice, “Don’t forget to
button up. It’s very cold and windy out there.”
“I know, Mum,” Sarah replied. Then she put on her boots, her coat, her
mittens and headed outside. It was very cold. The snow was coming down
heavily. By the time Sarah got to the palace, the snow was up to her knees.
It was very difficult for her to carry the dress box.
Suddenly, the wind ripped the box open and the dress flew out. Sarah burst
out crying. What a shame! Her dear mother’s hard work had gone to waste.
She had spent many days measuring, cutting and stitching the dress. And
the poor Queen! Sarah had to continue on her way to the palace to explain
what had happened.
It was time to break the bad news to the Queen. But then her feet stopped
moving and her mouth fell wide open. There was the beautiful dress. The
wind was holding it on the trunk of a tree, just outside the palace. At last,

Matt’s holidays
Matt hated going on holiday. His idea of a great holiday was sitting on the
sofa eating biscuits and watching TV. Unfortunately, his parents usually had
other plans. Two years ago they had taken him to see a castle. But there was
no castle. There were only piles of stones and broken walls.
“Never again,” said Matt.
Last year, his parents took him to the seaside.
Matt complained, “The sun is too hot, the water is too cold, and the seafood
tastes strange.”
This year they decided to try something different. “We’re going camping,”
said Dad.
“Hooray!” said Matt.
“You’re happy, Matt?” asked Mum. Matt had never been happy about any
holiday plans before.
“Oh yes. Finally, we are doing something good,” said Matt.
Matt knew all about camping from Frank, who had told him so many stories
about his camping trips with his family every year. They stayed in a big tent
with comfy beds, a fridge, a big TV with seventy-five channels and video
games. They had a bathroom with both a shower and a bathtub. They even
had a heated swimming pool.
The day finally came. After driving for four hours, they reached the campsite.
This was not what Matt had imagined. In front of them was rocky ground
underneath a cloudy-grey sky. There were three small tents flapping in the
wind. There were a few trees, but nothing else. There was no fridge, TV or
any comfy beds. There were only a few books and a deck of cards for
entertainment. What a horrible nightmare! How was Matt going to spend
three nights here?
Matt shuddered. Then he shouted like a hungry dinosaur, “Never again, Mum
and Dad!”
Examples:
On holiday, Matt liked to stay home and eat biscuits.
Matt’s family went to visit a castle two years ago.
Questions:
1. Matt’s family went to the________________ last year.

My favourite dinosaur was the T-rex. It was 3.________________ big as a real
dinosaur. It sounded and moved just like a real dinosaur as well. Some of my
classmates were really scared when the dinosaur roared. They ran away. It was so
funny!
4. ________________ were also many other types of dinosaurs. Some of them only
ate plants and leaves and did not eat any meat at all. Before coming to the
museum, I didn’t know that some dinosaurs could fly. My teacher told me that these
dinosaurs had wings, just 5. ________________ birds, and today’s birds are part of the
dinosaur family. That’s an interesting idea!
