Evaluating the Lagna/Lagna Lord

"Anchoring" The Learning

In the summer of 20131 was invited to teach in Sochi, Russian, along with K.N.
Rao, and another close associate of his. At the veiy last minute, Shri Rao had to
cancel due to ill health. He had been going to Russia regularly for years and had
a big following there, so many people had registered for this nearly week-long
event. Upon learning that he would not be teaching, the organizers had to refund
the course fee to many people, but still a good number remained. Whereas I was
veiy disappointed at die lost opportunity to spend this quality time with him, it
proved to be something of a life-changing experience for me. As a result of his
absence, I was asked to do the majority of the teaching, while the other associate
focused more on consulting.

It was my first time teaching through a translator, and it took some getting use
to. I like to teach in a very interactive way, using the so-called "Socratic
method" (after the Greek philosopher Socrates) of posing questions. I also like
to joke around a lot. It was a rather strange sensation then to crack a joke, but be
confronted by silence and serious faces. That is, until the class heard the
translation, and the laughter I was looking for ensued. And many times I would
get so wrapped up in what I was saying that the translator had to gently remind
me to give him time to translate.

After a day or so I got the hang of it, and it turned into one of the better teaching
experiences of my life due to the great enthusiasm and appreciation of the
Russian students. At the end of the seminar, I received the best compliment
anyone could ever pay me when one Russian lady who had studied with K.N.
Rao stood up and said that being in my class was like being in his. "Not quite," I
can remember thinking, "More of a pale imitation," but it was gratifying to hear
since I have endeavored not only to teach what he teaches, but also to emulate
his style and manner of teaching.

However, in order to more engage an audience to whom I could not speak

directly, I ended up indulging in some visual antics that you would never see
from K.N. Rao. At one point I was really wanting to get across the importance
of the lagna, and lagna lord when evaluating a birth chart. When making this
point, on an impulse, I started thrusting out my left hand when saying "lagna,"
followed by my right hand when saying "lagna lord," alternating these while
also swinging my hips to add emphasis. When this generated a lot of laughter, I
had the class all stand up and do this with me, even complimenting those who
were swinging in a smooth, coordinated way. My intent was to "anchor" this
important point by adding something more memorable than just a verbal
statement. It seemed to work since I've now been to Russia four times in the
past two years and whenever I mention, "lagna/lagna lord" someone in the class
will smile and make the motion.

The Importance of the Lagna/Lagna Lord

The fact is the lagna and the lagna lord are vitally important points in a birth
chart. It is the central pillar around which the whole horoscope is organized. The
word "lagna" means literally "attached to" and shows how the Zodiac is
attached to the local horizon at birth. The sign on the horizon (the ascending
sign), sets the pattern of which signs equate to which houses, which creates the
whole patterning of a chart. The exact degree of the sign rising on the local
horizon at birth is the most individualized point of any chart since it is based on
the exact time of birth, and this also establishes the lagna of all the divisional
charts, from which even the destiny (read karma) of twins can be differentiated.

The 1st house and the 1st lord represents the "person" in the birth chart as an
embodied being. In the ancient texts the 1st house is referred to as tanu bhava or
"house of the body," and therefore the ascendant and the planet ruling the
ascendant are the most important factors pertaining to over-all health and
physical well-being, an enormously important aspect of life.

In the chapter entitled "Judgment of the Houses" in the Brihat Parashara Hora
Shastra, we find the following statement regards the 1st house.

"The 1st house represents physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigor,

weakness, joy, sorrow, and innate nature."

It is for this reason that the analysis of any birth chart should begin with a
thorough evaluation of this house and its lord. A strong and favorably disposed
lagna/lagna lord goes a long way in boosting up the quality of any birth chart.
The placement of the lagna lord by sign, nakshatra and house provides
important clues about the individual's personality and inclinations. Any
planetary yopas in which the lagna lord is configured becomes a very important
distinguishing feature of the birth chart.

The kind of results a horoscope will give over-all are a good deal dependent on
the favorable or unfavorable disposition of these vital points. It is no accident
that in the chapter on "Miscellaneous Yogas" in the BPHS, the first one given is
"Shuba/Ashuba Yoga" as it pertains to the lagna.
"If there is only a benefic planet in the ascendant the yoga formed will be an
auspicious one, whereas a malefic only there in causes an inauspicious yoga. In
the same way, in the 12th and 2nd house, the situation of a benefic and a malefic
alone will respectively causes auspicious and inauspicious yogas.

The native born in an auspicious yoga will be eloquent, charming, virtuous, and
well mannered. Whereas one born in an inauspicious yoga will be sensual, will
do sinful acts, and will be a usurper of the wealth of others,"

These indications should not be taken literally, but what we should take away
from this verse is that natural benefics in the lagna, or exclusively in the houses
on both sides of the lagna is a veiy good thing for a birth chart generally,
whereas the reverse is not.

With regards to assessing the results of yogas in a chart in general:

• A lagna and lagna lord that are favorably disposed help enable any
good yoga in a birth chart to give its results more fully. Conversely,
they also tend to inhibit the more bitter fruit of negative yogas.

• A lagna and lagna lord that are not favorably disposed tend to retard
the sweeter fruit of good yogas, and enable challenging combinations
to give more vimlent results.

Moreover, many yogas given in the ancient texts actually stipulate that for the
yoga to give its effects the lagna/lagna lord must be strong.

What is meant then by a "strong and favorably disposed lagna/lagna lord?" The
following is a check list of these factors, all of which should be evaluated.

Factors that make the lagna strong and favorably disposed are:

1. Occupied or aspected by the lagna lord

2. Occupied or aspected by natural benefics, particularly if well
dignified
3. Not being occupied or aspected by natural malefics
4. Being exclusively hemmed by natural benefics (Shubha-Katari Yoga)
5. Benefic yogas forming in the lagna like Gaja Kesari Yoga, raja yoga
etc.
6. Vargottama lagna (Same lagna in navamsha as in the birth chart)
I now propose to illustrate these factors both individually and collectively using
charts of well-known personalities.

Lagna Lord in the Lagna

There is nothing that strengthens the lagno more and makes it favorably
disposed than when the lagna lord is in its own house. Should that lagna lord
also be a natural benefic, all the better. If it is conjoined or aspected by another
natural benefic, it still better, and if there is no additional influence of natural
malefics, then this is best.

Such is partially the case in the chart of comic actor, John Belushi, who after
being a standout among the original cast of the TV variety show, Saturday Night
Live, went on to star in such films as Animal House and The Blue Brothers.

Except with Cancer and Leo lagnas, anytime the lagna lord is in the lagna, it
will form one of the Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas or Five Combinations For A
Notable Person. In Belushi's case, his lagna lord Jupiter in Sagittarius gives
Hamsa Yoga. It is with another natural benefic, Venus, and there is no influence
of natural malefics on these benefics in the lagna by conjunction or aspect.

His greatest movie success was The Blues Brothers in 1980 during Mercuiy-
Jupiter. Mercuiy is involved in the best raja yoga for Sagittarius lagna
(Mercuiy-Sun), is exalted in D-9, and involved in a powerful raja yoga-giving
exchange in D-10. The sub-period lord, Jupiter, gets exalted in D-10, in addition
to the favorable yogas it forms in the birth chart.

But those familiar with the life of John Belushi know that he struggled with his
weight, was dmg and alcohol addicted, and died young of a drug overdose at age
32. What is the problem then with this otherwise strong and very favorably
disposed lagna/lagna lord? Can you see it before reading on?

The classics of Jyotisha are very clear on those conditions that turn Mercury and
the Moon into malefics. It is when Mercuiy is associated with natural malefics
only, and the Moon is dark and waning. It can be seen that both Mercuiy and
the Moon therefore become malefics in his chart, with the Moon also at its most
extreme point of debilitation and in a mutual angle with Saturn. In which case,
both the lagna and lagna lord of this chart are getting Papa-Katari Yoga, or a
malefic "scissoring" of the lagna.

This highlights a critically important point regards astrological analysis. It

should always precede in a progression of:

1. thesis
 2. antithesis
3. synthesis

What this means is that when you see a set of factors like "Jupiter, the lagna
lord in the lagna, with the additional influence of the natural benefic Venus,
without being conjoined or aspected by natural malefics," your initial thought
(thesis) would be that all matters pertaining to the 1st house would "prosper."

But your next question should be, "Are there any other factors that counter-
indicate or significantly modify this? This is what is meant by "antithesis" or
opposing indications. In this case, the malefic hemming of the 1st house/lst lord
is a big modifier.

What follows then is synthesis. In this case, the fact that Belushi was quite a
notable person, a big, fun-loving personality and comic genius, with great
physical prowess (he was a star athlete in high school), but who was also way
over-indulgent (Jupiter gone wrong!) and with major underlying emotional
problems, indicated by the Moon in his chart. I suspect that his abuse of drugs
and alcohol may have been a form of "self-medicating" or an escape from these.

As an aside, John Belushi's chart is an excellent illustration of Khadga Yoga. In

the BPHS its definition and results are given as follows:

"If the 9th lord occupies the 2nd house and the 2nd lord occupies the 9th and the
ascendant lord is in an angle or trine, the yoga so formed is called Khadga
Yoga, The native born in Khadga Yoga will be endowed with wealth, fortune,
and happiness, be learned in Shastras, be gifted with intelligence and strength,
be grateful and skillful"

What's fascinating about the presence of thisyocja in his chart is that Khadga
means "sacrificial knife or sword," and one of the comic characters that John
Belushi became famous for on Saturday Night Live was as a sword-wielding
samurai!

In contrast, see a similar configuration in the chart of Hollywood movie star,

Paul Newman, but without the malefic hemming of the lagna, and veiy
problematic Moon.

In his case, his lagna lord in the lagna is conjoined with two additional benefics,
since his Jupiter is also with Mercuiy, getting directional strength in the 1st
house. Here there is no question of Mercury acting as a natural benefic since it
is with other natural benefics. There is one blemish on this otherwise very
good picture, the aspect of the natural malefic, Saturn.

Here "thesis" far outweighs "antithesis" and Newman was always physically in
good shape, and enjoyed a robust health throughout his life, exercising regularly
and eating a healthy diet, while living to the ripe old age of 83. In Mercuiy-
Jupiter, after being nominated many times, he finally won an Oscar for Best
Supporting Actor in the Color of Money (1986), reprising his role as "Fast
Eddie" Felton from The Hustler (1961), for which he was nominated for Best
Actor.

Note Mercury's placement in the lagna of his dashamsha in its own sign, and
enjoying a highly benefic Shuba-Katari Yoga formed by Jupiter and Venus in
the 12th and 2nd respectively.

He first became a big movie star in the major period of his exalted Saturn in his
birth chart, but see that this planet falls in its debilitation sign, Aries in D-10.
However, it is with Mars, its dispositor in its own sign, giving neecha bhanga, or
cancellation of the debility. One of his most successful movies and a role for
which he is well known was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which
premiered in Saturn-Mars.

The name Sanjay Rath may be familiar to some students of Jyotisha, as he is a

well-known teacher. He also has Jupiter as the lagna lord in the lagna, only this
time in Pisces.

Unlike we saw in the chart of John Belushi and Paul Newman, there is no
additional influence of natural benefics. But like Newman, his Jupiter does have
the blemish of the aspect of a natural malefic, Mars, but in this case Mars is also
the 9th lord and its mutual glance with Jupiter along the 1-7 axis forms a
powerful 9-10 raja yoga. Whereas Sanjay and I differ on many things regards
teaching Jyotisha, particularly the most efficacious approach to the Jaimini
system, it must be acknowledged that he displays a prodigious command of the
shastras, (Jupiter!), which has made him a well-known teacher. In evaluating
this lagna/lagna lord, I would also take into account the very close mutual
angular relationship between Jupiter and the Rahu-Ketu axis.

The teacher of astrology with whom I am in complete agreement, K.N. Rao, also
has a natural benefic as the lagna lord in the lagna. Here the natural benefic is
Venus in its moolatrikona sign. Libra. Like in the previous example, his lagna
lord also has the "blemish" of the influence of Mars, and is with a waxing but
dark Moon as well. Yet these planets again form powerful raja yogas with this
lagna lord, Venus. The contrast from the previous example is that all these
planets are in a beautiful kendra relationship with his exalted Jupiter, involved in
a good Gaja Kesari Yoga,

He is currendy running his Venus-Moon period, two planets forming a 1-10 raja
yoga in the 1st house, and he remains arguably the most famous and respected
name in the world of Jyotisha today.

Another Indian, who despite his diminutive size, strode upon this earth like a
colossus, also had Venus as a lagna lord in the lagna. See the chart of Mahatma
Ghandi.

Here the picture regards the lagna is very complex, with 6 out of 9 grahas, either
in, aspecting or hemming his Libra ascendant. The lagna lord, Venus, gets the
additional influence of two natural benefics (Jupiter and Mercuiy), but also is
closely conjunct Mars. Moreover, all the planets in the lagna get hemmed by the
natural malefics Saturn and Sun, giving Papa-Katari Yoga, or malefic
"scissoring" of the 1st house.

This patterning gave rise to many effects in his life. Planets in the 1st, 7th, 2nd,
and 12th, while either the 9th or 10th lords are strongly placed, produces a
variant of Bheri "Kettle Drum" Yoga. This, along with his potent, Gaja Kesari
Yoga, enabled him to be a major "mover and shaker" that drummed the British
out of India. The malefic hemming of the ascendant along with some other
factors gave rise to Bhandana Yoga, a combination for imprisonment. Ghandi-ji
spent many months in British jails where he suffered physical abuse. His
famous hunger strikes (Saturn in the 2nd!) were a form of self-inflicted suffering
to the body in service of his cause. Such a powerful lagna gave rise to such a
powerful man, and with such strength of character.

dramatist and literaiy/art critic, George Bernard Shaw, with the natural benefic
Mercury, as the lagna lord in the lagna.

Again, we see the "blemish" of a natural malefic, but one that also forms a good
raja yoga with the lagna lord in the lagna. The very close kendra relationships
with both Jupiter and the Rahu-Ketu axis are additional influences, one benign,
one not. His greatest work was authored in his Mercury-Jupiter period.

Bom just a month after Shaw, another famous Victorian era author, H. Rider
Haggard, shares some striking similarities in his birth chart.

His lagna lord, Mercuiy, in the lagna is now joined by another natural benefic,
Venus, and the mildly malefic Sun, in addition to all die same factors that we
saw in Shaw's chart. His greatest work was authored in Jupiter-Mercmy.

An exalted Mercury as the lagna lord in the lagna, can be seen in the chart of
master illusionist, Dave Copperfield. While there are no additional influences of
natural benefics. Mars makes its aspect on this lagna/lagna lord.

His Mercury helps form a special raja yoga brought about when natural malefics
all, or mostly, fall in the trishadayo houses (3,6, and 11), while an exalted planet
is either in or aspects the lagna. See Saturn and Rahu in the Srd house, while
Mars is in the 6th, and the exchange of signs between these two planets as the
3rd and 6th lords. He started performing at a very young age in his Mars period
and went on to become an enormously successful stage magician in his Rahu
period.

Whereas a natural malefic as a lagna lord in the lagna may not be quite so good
as a natural benefic, this still can create a very strong and favorably disposed
lagna, all other things being equal.

In the absurdly celebrity-obsessed culture of the U.S. no one quite "takes the
cake" this way as Kim Kardashian.

To my mind, only the concept of karma can explain how such an individual,
whose only "talent" appears to be displaying her posterior on the internet, could
command so much media attention for so little reason. She has her rather
substantial Chandra-Adhi Yoga (natural benefics in the 6th, 7th, and 8th from the
Moon) to thank for putting her adhi or "first" among people who are famous for
being famous. But it is her lagna lord, Mars, in the lagna that helps boost the
over-all quality of her birth chart and enables this and her Gaja Kesari Yoga to
manifest more powerfully.

Mars is in a mutual angle with Venus, thus getting some additional influence of
a natural benefic, the one blemish being the aspect of Saturn.

In recent articles, IVe referred to the chart of current U.S. President, Barrack
Obama, many times to illustrate different points. Let his horoscope again serve
to illustrate the point I am wanting to make now.

His lagna lord, Saturn, in the lagna in its own sign and also vargottoma, is a
signature feature of his birth chart. It receives the additional influence of two
natural benefics, Jupiter and Mercury, with only the mildly malefic, Sun,
completing the picture.

For an African-American with a Muslim-sounding name to get elected President

of the United States (think of the odds!), it took someone with a very strong and
favorably disposed lagna, with powerful yogas configured there. Now in his
Saturn-Mercury period, Obama remains very much in power, despite the
unceasing efforts of his political opponents to undermine and thwart his
Presidency.

Technically speaking, though they don't form Maha Purusha Yogas like all the
planets shown thus far, the placement of the Sun in Leo and Moon in Cancer for
these lagnas, can give a rather similar effect.

In the chart of former President Lyndon Johnson, the Sun, as the lagna lord in
the lagna, also gets the additional influence of two natural benefics, as well as
Mars and a dark Moon. From biographical accounts I've read, there may never
have lived a more power-hungiy politician.

In the chart given above of a former President of India, a waxing Moon is the
lagna lord in the lagna. It gets the additional influence of the natural benefic,
Jupiter, so strong in its own sign and vargottomo. These placements of Jupiter
and the Moon form the best variant of Gauri "Divine Mother"Yo^a, whose
definition and effects are as follows:
"The 9th lord in own or exaltation sign and in an angle or a trine, and the Moon
in own or exaltation sign and in an angle or trine aspected by Jupiter."

"One will come from an illustrious family, having a beautiful body, a lotus-like
face, and success that will be praised by one and all One will be a friend of the
sovereign and have children of a very good character."

The lagna lord, Moon, is also with a natural malefic, but in this case Mars is the
yogakarako, forms a Maharaja Yoga with the Moon, and its debilitation is a
classic case of Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga. He first became a President of India
in Mars-Jupiter-Moon, activating all these good yogas related to the 1st house of
his birth chart. Since he served as President under both Indira and Rajiv Ghandi,
it is likely that he was, "friends of these sovereigns."

Discussion

My point in showing you these twelve charts? Simply to illustrate that, whether
it is a natural benefic or malefic, the lagna lord in the lagna is normally a very
good thing for any birth chart. Maha Purusha Yogas forming in the lagna, as in
ten of these examples, seem particularly able to actually make you a notable,
powerful personality.

However, my equally important point in showing charts like that of John Belushi
and Mahatma Ghandi, in which there is Papa Katari Yoga, and therefore both
the lagna and lagna lord are subject to this, is that this "very good thing" gets
modified, a litde or a lot depending. Statements in the classics about die 1st
lord in the 1st house giving "full felicity of the body" and the like, simply will not
apply.

In the chart given above, Venus is the lagna lord in the lagna like we saw in the
chart of Shri Rao and Mahatma Ghandi. In this case though, Venus is without
the additional influence of natural benefics and is with two natural malefics.
With Rahu in the second and Mars-Mercury in the 12th, there is a quality of
Papa-Katari Yoga here, since Mercuiy, though exalted, is only with the natural
malefic, Mars. During her Venus period, as an adolescent, this person was
anorexic and suffered from significant self-image and self-esteem issues.

When evaluating any point in a chart that appears quite favorable, always look
for any counter-indications that would modify, or even reverse this initial view,
keeping in mind the progression thesis/antithesis/synthesis.

My own 7th house is a perfect illustration of other factors reversing an initial

indication.

In the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra you will find the statement that the lord of
the 7th in the 7th house (especially a natural benefic) will give a person "full
happiness of marriage" Looking at my chart, if you saw this and stopped there
you might declare that I've had a very happy married life. However, the fact is
that IVe never married, though I came close a few times in my Jupiter major
period. Both the 7th house and the 7th lord get the obstructing influence of a
moolatrikona 6th lord Saturn, and the 7th house/7th lord also gets hemmed by
malefics.

The Lagna Lord Aspecting the Lagna

The next best thing to having the lagna lord in the lagna is to have the lord of
the 1st house aspecting the 1st house. This is particularly true when the lagna
lord is making its 7th house aspect. See the chart of Indira Ghandi.

The lagna lord Moon is glancing at the lagna, Cancer, from the 7th house,
Capricorn. The additional modifying influence is Saturn, who both exchanges
signs with the Moon and mutually aspects. While forming a raja yoga that made
her Prime Minister of India for a second time in her Saturn major period, as an

Like we saw in the charts of Indira Ghandi and Susan Sarandon, there is a 1-7
house lord exchange, giving a powerful raja yoga, but now the exchange is
between two natural benefics, with Mercury getting dik bala or directional
strength in the 1st house.

Both the lagna and the lagna lord also have the influence of a bright Moon, less
than a day past purnima, or complete fullness. The one blemish on this
otherwise dramatically favorable picture is Saturn's influence on both the
lagnaAagna lord. But see that Saturn is the 3rd lord of performance strongly
connected with both the 1st and 10th houses.

Take a moment though and note all the favorable yogas that Jupiter is involved
in, resulting in her being something of a Mistress of the Universe when it comes
to the pop music scene in her Jupiter major period. How many can you identify
before reading further?

• Like Mahatma Gandhi, she has a variant of Bheri "Kettle Drum"

James Gamer was an American television and movie star whose career spanned
several decades starting in the 1950s. The debility of his lagna lord, Mercuiy,
gets cancelled twice over since it is with an exalted planet and its sign lord,
Jupiter. These three natural benefics form multiple, high-quality raja yogas in
addition to variants of bothLapna and Chandra Adhi-Yoga. His stardom first
began in Mercury-Mercury when he appeared in the TV comic western,

Jupiter's placement in Pisces with Mercury is a strong factor for cancellation.

The height of his career came in Rahu-Mercury (with Rahu giving the results of
Mercuiy) when he appeared in the TV documentary series, Joseph Campbell and
the Power of Myth, that was viewed by many millions of people world-wide.

The Lagna Occupied Or Aspected By Natural Benefics

The next best condition that can make a lagna "strong and favorably disposed" is
the presence of a natural benefic in the lagna, or where the lagna is aspected by
a natural benefic, especially if these natural benefics are themselves strong. Go
back to the chart of Paul Newman and you will see that all the natural benefics
are in the lagna. Look at that of James Gamer again and you will see that all the
natural benefics aspect his lagna. In both cases, two out of three of the natural
benefics have sources of strength.

Venus is less than one degree conjunct the lagna, and as the 4th and 11th lord in
the 1st house gives both raja and dhanayoga. Jupiter, strong in its own sign,
aspects the lagna and as a highly benefic 9th lord. Of course, she is known for
her exceptional beauty, and all her achievements in film and her humanitarian
endeavors have come in her Venus major period.

An even better version of this same pattern involving Venus and Jupiter can be
seen in the birth chart of the great Indian woman saint, Ananadamayi Ma. In her

Here Venus is not exalted, but still well dignified in a sign of a Great Friend, and
Jupiter is in its moolatrikona sign. Both of these benefics have a good lordship,
and together they form a 5-10 raja yoga. He won his first Oscar for Best
Original Screenplay for the movie Good Will Hunting in his Jupiter period.

Two natural benefics in the lagna of film director, George Lucas' chart,
contributed to its over-all quality. Note that there is no additional influence of

However, Mercury situated in an Aries lagna presents something of a paradox.

As the 3rd and 6th lord, it is classified by Parashara as a functional malefic for
this lagna, and as such it can bring a detrimental effect, especially regards
potentials for illness or injuiy (6th house) when activated in the dasha
sequence. It is sometimes difficult for students to grasp that a graha can be
having both a positive and negative effect on a house, but one encounters such
paradoxes all die time within Jyotisha. Here it is more innocuous because it is
not afflicted.

We see Mercury and Venus together again in the lagna, but now there is the
additional influence of natural malefics. Mars and Saturn. With the lagna lord.
Mars, in a planetary war with Venus, conjunct the 6th lord and aspected by
Saturn, this picture turns rather dark. In his Rahu major period, with this graha
falling in the 6th house, and giving the results of Mercury, he suffered severe
back injuries that some doctors thought would leave him crippled without
surgical intervention. Interestingly, he was able to heal himself with yoga
asana, ruled by the 3rd house.

The same paradox exists when Jupiter is situated in a Libra ascendant, as in the
chart of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Jupiter in his lagna configured in Gaja Kesari Yoga greatly contributed to his
being the incredibly dominant personality that he was, and to the stature in life
that he reached from rather humble origins. In the first part of the Jupiter dasha.
he was the Emperor of France and held dominion either by conquest or through
alliances over a good portion of Europe. But later in the period he began
experiencing some significant health problems, which some contend effected his
judgment and performance at the battle of Waterloo. He ended up exiled and
essentially jailed on a small island by his enemies (6th lord/house!) and died in
Jupiter-Rahu, with some historians holding the view that he was slowly poisoned
by small portions of arsenic put in this food.

Even an exalted Jupiter in the lagna, can be both a blessing and curse, depending
on additional factors, as evidenced by the chart below.

It belongs to an individual who is both a psychiatrist and prominent Jungian

psychoanalyst. He is currently running his Jupiter mahadasha, and as the 9th
lord exalted in the lagna, Jupiter gives both raja and dhana yoga, making him
quite successful and with a good income. He is a beloved professor and guru-
like figure at a Jungian Institute, a master of dream interpretation, an author of
marvelous books about the religious function in the psyche, and is invited all
over the world to speak at conferences. That's the good side of this exalted
Jupiter in the lagna.

The other side is that Jupiter is also a mooltrikona 6th lord and is rather combust,
as well as being "grossly afflicted" as my teacher would say, getting the aspect
of a strong Mars, Saturn, and with the Rahu-Ketu axis. Saturn as an 8th lord of
deadly diseases, and a maraka 7th lord for Cancer lagna is the biggest problem,
and in Jupiter-Saturn he was diagnosed with a rather virulent form of blood
cancer. Fortunately, after a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy, he was
able to recover and is now cancer free and relatively healthy. This is how even a
strong natural benefic in the lagna can become both a veiy favorable and quite
unfavorable influence.
Of course, if an exalted benefic, like Jupiter, influences the lagno, and has a
good lordship, then the influence is superb and wholly favorable.

The chart above is that of a former Shankacharaya of Jyotir Math, Brahmananda

Saraswati, who was the guru of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi of Transcendental
Meditation fame. See his Jupiter at 6 degrees of Cancer, just one degree past
extreme exaltation. It rules the 2nd and 5th houses for Scorpio lagna, and is
therefore a functional benefic as well.

It throws its highly benefic glance on the lagna, which contains the moksha
karaka, Ketu, who is also in its exaltation sign. Jupiter is in mutual aspect with
an exalted 1st lord, Mars, as well, so both the lagna and lagna lord have the
beautiful influence of the karaka of higher knowledge and wisdom. It all speaks
to the profound spiritual depths that this man embodied.

Shuba-Katari Yoga - Benefic Hemming of the Lagna

Another factor that can make a lagna strong and favorably disposed is when
only natural benefics are in the 2nd and 12th houses, surrounding the birth
lagna. If these benefics are themselves strong and unblemished, all the better.

In the chart of Ross Perot, billionaire business man and former independent
presidential candidate, the benefic hemming of his Gemini lagna strongly
contributed both in making him a dynamo personality and enormously wealthy.

Mercury, who is the lagna lord, goes to the 12th, while Venus is in the 2nd. In
his Mercuiy period he founded Electronic Data Systems (EDS), and just after
moving into the Venus period, he sold a majority interest to General Motors for
$2.4 billion. He then started Perot Systems and sold it to Dell for $3.9 billion in
2009, just after moving into the Moon period.

the lagna. And because there is also a planet in the 7th house, while the 9th and

see powerful Bheri Yoga,

In the chart of John Belushi, we saw natural benefics in the 1st house including
the lagna lord, Jupiter, get modified by Papa-Kdtari Yoga, or malefic hemming
of the lagna. The opposite happens in the chart of English poet, George Gordon,
better known as Lord Byron.

The malefics Mars and Ketu are in the lagna, but a near perfectly full Moon is in
the 2nd house, while Jupiter is in the 12th. A contemporary of Byron's described
him as "half angel, half devil," as he was capable of great acts of kindness, but
also some cruelty. Certainly, he behaved so towards his wife. In any event, he
was one of the most prominent personalities of his time. His vargottama lagna

All the natural malefics are either in or aspecting this lagna, and Mars is the 8th
lord and Saturn the 6th lord, so it becomes worse. I first met this woman when
she was 30 years old, and already she'd had two kidney transplants, without
which she would not have been alive. In Jupiter-Saturn, she was struck by a car
as a pedestrian and hospitalized. However, she seems to always pull through
and recover from these health crises, and is otherwise quite healthy, and a
regular practitioner of a very rigorous form of hatha yoga. Her Shubha-Katari
Yoga is a "saving grace,"

Vargottama Lagna

Just as a vargottama planet becomes capable of giving its results strongly, if the
lagna is the same in both the rashi and navomsha, a similar result ensues.

In the chart of former heavyweight boxing champion, Christian minister, and

A vargottama lagna and the aspect of Jupiter on the lagna were something of a
"saving grace" in the chart of former U.S. President, John F. Kennedy, which
otherwise evidences some really terrible arishta yogas that gave him life-long
health problems. On three occasions he was so ill that a priest was called to
administer the last rites. He was able to survive in these instances, but the
aristha combinations dominate, and he died tragically, assassinated in the third
year of his Presidency.

Through these illustrations, we have now looked at all the conditions listed
earlier that make a lagna strong and favorably disposed.

1. Occupied or aspected by the lagna lord

2. Occupied or aspected by natural benefics, particularly if well
dignified
3. Not being occupied or aspected by natural malefics
4. Being exclusively hemmed by natural benefics (Shubho-Kotori Yoga)
5. Benefic yogas forming in the lagna like Gaja Kesari Yoga, raja yoga
etc.
6. Vargottama lagna (Same lagna in navamsha as in the birth chart)

When several or more of these conditions apply to a lagna, as was the case with
Paul Newman, it makes for an exceptional condition of the lagna.

However, this is only half of the equation, since the over-all condition and
disposition of the lagna lord must also be assessed. Many of the factors to take
into account are the same.

Factors that make the lagna lord strong and favorably disposed are:

1. When it well dignified (exalted, moolatrikona, own sign etc.) or strong

in other ways such as vargottama, having directional strength, or being
involved in an exchange.
2. The lagna lord obtaining a good dignity (exalted or own sign) in many
divisional charts, especially, navamsha (D-9), drekkana (D-3), and
shastiamsha (D-60).
3. When it occupies an auspicious house (trines and angles)
4. When it is associated or aspected by natural benefics or lords of
auspicious houses.
5. When it is hemmed by benefics
6. When its dispositer is strong and well-placed.
7. When it is not poorly dignified, combust, defeated in a planetary war, in
 a sandhi, hemmed by malefics, placed in an inauspicious house (6, 8, or
12) or associated with or aspected by natural malefics or lords of
inauspicious houses.

Lagna Lord Well-Dignified in an Angle/Trine

Just to demonstrate that these conditions can exist in charts other than those of
famous people, see the chart below of an astro-physicist and university
professor, well-known in his field.

The lagna itself contains two natural benefics, Mercury and the yogakaraka
planet for Capricorn, Venus. The lagna lord, Saturn gets exalted in the strongest
angle and is in an exchange with Venus. Additionally, his lagna lord gets the
additional influence of a natural benefic, since Jupiter aspects. Do you see any
blemishes on this otherwise rosy picture? I will leave that to the reader, but
regardless, this is the chart of a high-functioning individual with a strong
personality and leadership skills that was able to make his mark on the world.

Another man with a well-placed exalted Saturn as his lagna lord, made a huge,
indelible mark on the world as one of India's great, God-realized saints.

His fell in the 9th house, while its dispositor, Venus, is exalted. His lagna lord,
Saturn, also receives the aspect of Jupiter. The lagna itself has a yargottama
Mercury who gets directional strength and is aspected by Jupiter. His
enlightenment is said to have come in the Saturn mahadasha.

In the context of a very different chart, an exalted lagna lord, Saturn, in the 9th
house, made J.P. Morgan the financial titan of his era, and one of its wealthiest
men.

Whereas this Saturn is also disposited by a very exalted Venus, it additionally

gets the influence of the Rahu-Ketu axis and the aspect of Mars in its debilitation
sign.

From Wikipedia:

"At the height of Morgan's career during the early 1900s, he and his partners
had financial investments in many large corporations and had significant
influence over the nation's high finance and United States congress members. He
directed the banking coalition that stopped the Panic of1907. He was the
leading financier of the Progressive Era, and his dedication to efficiency and
modernization helped transform American business."

This timing coincided with his Saturn major period.

A well-placed exalted lagna lord, Mars, made Mia Farrow a major movie star in
its mahadasha. Hers goes to the 10th where it also gets directional strength,
giving Ruchaka Yoga. It combines with its friend, the 5th lord Sun, also getting
directional strength, giving an exceptional raja yoga.

These two grahas are joined by Mercury, the 3rd lord of the dramatic arts, in an
exchange with the 10th lord Saturn. The lagna lord, Mars, and this
configuration in the 10th house gets the additional influence of the natural
benefic, Jupiter, who is also a functionally benefic 9th lord.

Moreover, Mars and Jupiter in her chart form the highly benefic Chamara Yoga,
defined by when the lagna lord is exalted in an angle, and has the aspect of
Jupiter. The BPHS gives the results of this yoga as follows:

"The native born in the Chamara Yoga will be a king or be honored by the king,
be long lived, scholarly, eloquent and well versed in all arts."

In Mars-Jupiter she performed her fame-giving role as Daisy in The Great

Gatsby.

As a final note, see that the lagna also gets the aspect of its own lord, with no
other influences, benefic or malefic. This is one strong, and veiy favorably
disposed lagna/Iagna lord!
A lagno lord placed in the strongest angle in its own sign can be equally
beneficial, as can be seen from the chart of Harrison Ford.

in his Mercury mahadasha after his appearance in Star Wars that he became a
mega-movie star.

His Mercury forms a powerful 9-10 exchange with Venus, and though it is with
a natural malefic, Saturn, these two form a good 1-5 raja yoga for this lagna.
He became President in Mercury-Saturn.
Thus, it can be seen that having the lagna lord fall in an angle or trine in a good
dignity is a highly favorable indication in a chart. Should that lagna lord then
continue to obtain a good dignity in many divisional charts, it can become truly
exceptional. Such is the case with Ramakrishna Paramahamsa's lagna lord,
Saturn. See its placements in all 16 divisions given in BPHS.

This is a truly extraordinaiy picture. Saturn falls into its exaltation,

moolatrikona or own sign in 10 of the 16 divisions. Note that these include the
four most significant ones in the dasa varga or 10 divisional scheme.—rashi,
drekkana, navamsha, and shastyamsha.

If we also include those divisions in which Saturn falls in a friend's sign, then
this planet obtains "good divisions" in 11 out of 16 vargas. Recall that it is said
that Ramakrishna Paramahamsa obtained God-Realization in his Saturn dasha.

Lagna Lord With/Aspected by a Natural Benefic

Just having the lagna lord under the influence of a strong natural benefic,
particularly if this benefic has a good lordship, significantly enhances a birth
chart. We see this in the horoscope of Spanish movie star, Antonio Banderas.

His logna lord Saturn goes to the 11th with a moolatrikona Jupiter, the 2nd and
11th lord, involved in Gaja Kesari Yoga. Venus, the yogakaraka planets for his
Aquarius lagna, also aspects the lagna. The influence of these natural benefics
on the lagna/lagna lord are particularly good because they also have a good
lordship.

A something similar can found in the chart of another movie star, Michele
Pfeiffer.

Only in her case the lagna lord Venus goes into its exaltation sign, Pisces, with a
vargottama and neecha bhanga Mercury, who is the 2nd and 5th lord. What
spoils this picture is that these planets in Pisces get hemmed by malefics. Even
so, in her Moon-Venus period, after competing successfully in some beauty
pageants, she was able to parlay this into her first acting roles.

In the chart below of a non-celebrity, but still very successful person, the lagna
lord, Mercuiy, is well-placed in the 5th house. Itfs dignity is not as good as what
we've seen in the previous examples, being in the sign of a Friend. Jupiter, the
natural benefic whose aspect it receives, is not in its own or exaltation sign, but
does get directional strength. There is the absence of any influence of natural
malefics on this lagna lord. Both Jupiter and Mercury participate in Saraswati
Yoga She is now running her Jupiter-Mercury period, and it is proving to be
exceptional for her career as a musician and music educator.

Benefic Hemming of the Lagna Lord

Aristha yogas very similar to those of John F. Kennedy exist in my own chart
but get significantly negated by a highly benefic hemming of the lagna lord.
This, and the aspect of a strong Jupiter onto the lagna saved me from the
extensive health problems he experienced.

Dipositor of the Lagna Strong and Well-Placed - Dispositor Yogas

"Dispositorship" is an important concepts in Jyotisha, especially as it pertains to

the lagna lord, as evidenced by the manyyo^as given in the ancient texts that are
based on this concept. When discussing the chart of Taylor Swift earlier I
referenced Parvata "Mountain" Yoga, and Kahala "Big Drum"" Yoga, both
based on the concept of dispositorship. See the following definition and
description of effects of Parvata Yo^a:

"The dispositor of the lagna lord is in it exaltation or own sign and in an angle
or a trine"

"Doing acts causing eternal benefit, one will have everlasting wealth and
happiness, and become lord of the Earth"

Such a condition significantly enhances a lagna lord. If the lagna lord itself, is
also strong, it is even better, and if both of these planets fall in auspicious
houses, then it creates an exceptional situation. Such is the case in the chart of

Her lagna lord, Saturn, goes to the 12th house, and though its mutual aspect with
the Moon does form a 1-7 raja yoga, this is not the type of placement we've seen
in the charts of all these other prominent people.

However, Saturn's dispositor, Jupiter, is in its extreme exaltation at 5-46 of

Cancer and falls in an angle. Moreover, the ascendant gets the aspect of the two
best benefics, and with Jupiter, Venus and Mercuiy all falling in the 7th and 8th
houses, this is a variant of Lagna Adhi Yoga. She got "discovered" and was
given her first starring role in a television series in Rahu-Venus (that "Yogaj
Combination!"). Now in Jupiter-Saturn her Hunger Games movies are box
office blockbusters, and she is one of the most sought after actresses in
Hollywood. This is decidedly not a weak lagna/lagna lord.

The astrological savants of ancient times also perceived that even when the
dispositor of the dispositor of the lagna lord fell in angle/trine and in
exaltation/own sign, it created a beneficial condition. This is known as a variant
ofKahala "Big Drum" Yoga, defined and described as follows:

"The dispositor of the lord of the sign occupied by the lagna lord is in its
exaltation or own sign and in an angle or a trine."

"One will thrive well, be noble, benevolent, kind, and respected by other men"

This condition can be found in the chart of John Travolta.

His lagna lord is in a rather good condition in its own right. It is a very bright
Full Moon, getting the aspect of two natural benefics, Venus and Mercury, and
configured in Gaja Kesari Yoga with Jupiter.

The dispositor of the Moon, is the Sun, and its dispositor is Saturn, exalted in an
angle, giving Sasha and Kahala Yoga. His first two greatest box office
successes, Saturday Night Fever and Grease, came in Moon-Saturn. Later his
career really declined, but in his Rahu major period, giving the results of Saturn,
he made a major comeback in such films as Pulp Fiction, for which he was
nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor.

Two other dispositor yogas found in the classics get progressively more
complex.

Parijatha "Celestial Coral Tree" Yoga

"The dispositor of the lord of the lagna and the navamsha lord of that dispositor
must be in an angle and a trine, own or exaltation sign"

"One will be a sovereign attentive to duty and engagements, of compassionate

disposition, destined to be happy in the middle and latter portion of life,
respected and obeyed by other kings, fond of war, and possessing elephants and
horses.

Please note the difference in definition here where the stipulation is that the
designated planets can be either in an angle/trine or own/exaltation, they don't
have to be in both. Of course, if they are, it is even better.

This yoga appears in the chart of a pioneer merchandiser and the founder of the
famous department store, Woolworths.

His lagna lord is Mars, whose dispositor. Moon goes into the strongest angle,
while also in a mutual glance with Mars, creating a classic neecha bhanga raja
yoga. The Moon's dispositor in D-9 is the Sun, who in the rashi is an exalted.
vargottama graha in the lagna, thus fulfilling the conditions for Parijatha Yoga.

Though the first store was founded in the Jupiter major period, the expansion
into a chain of stores and initial rise/success came in the Saturn mahadasaha.
Saturn forms multiple raja yogas in the 1st house, and is a classic case of neecha
bhanga raja yoga.

Then see the dashamsha where Saturn falls in the lagna, disposited by an exalted
Sun in the 9th.

Kalpadruma "Tree of Plenty" Yoga

"The lagna lord, its dispositor, and the dispositor of that, and the navamsha lord
of the last must be in an angle, trine, own or exaltation sign."

"One will be a pious, strong and merciful king endowed with all kinds of wealth
and fond of war."

Again be sure to note that the designated planets can either be in angle/trine or
exaltation/own sign, they need not be in both conditions.

The chart of J.P. Morgan shown earlier illustrates thisyocja.

See each component of theyocja individually and how it fulfills the stipulated
conditions:

1. Lagna lord, Saturn, is exalted and in a trine house

2. Saturn's dispositor, Venus, is in its highest point of exaltation and
vargottama.
3. Venus's dispositor, Jupiter is exalted.
4. Jupiter's dispositor in navamsha is itself, well placed in its own
 moolatrikona sign.

In my experience, it is rare to find such a yoga in charts especially of this

quality, with all the exalted planets, and it suggests a rare karma. Go back to the
chart of Ramokrishna Paromahamso and you will see it applies there at well.

The classics indicate that both of these later two dispositoryocjas can make a
person "fond of war" The way this played itself out in the lives of FW
Woolworth and J.P. Morgan is that they were both passionately fond of business
and constantly "at war" with their "enemies," more commonly referred to as their
competitors. The only war of which Ramakrishna may have been fond to my
knowledge was the war on spiritual ignorance.
Failing to see these dispositor yogas can lead to the misjudgment of a birth chart
and the kind of results a period can bring, as happened to me with the following
birth chart.

As you can see, the lagna receives only the aspect of a debilitated Mars, while
the lagna lord Saturn goes to the 8th house in a gandanta degree, and is hemmed
by natural malefics. There is not the modifying influence of natural benefics on
the lagna/lagna lord. Since he had run his Saturn major period from age 12 to
31,1 assumed he had experienced some significant health problems, or other
types of misfortunes, but it was simply not so.

What had not registered with me is that Saturn's dispositor, the Sun, gives a very
good Parvata Yoga, as it is in an angle and at its extreme degree of exaltation.
This yoga is further enhanced since natural benefics are on both sides of the Sun,
giving Subha Ubayachari Yoga.

As it turns out, in the later part of his Saturn period he worked for an
organization called Doctors Without Borders, which helps people worldwide
where the need is greatest, delivering emergency medical aid to people affected
by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care. In other words,
he was constandy involved with people undergoing misfortunes impacting there
health, and was sometimes in risky, high-conflict danger zones.

The Other Side of the Story

Almost all the charts seen thus far had multiple factors that made the
lagnaAagna lord "strong and favorably disposed," though we also saw how
some had these factors modified, especially when the lagna was hemmed
exclusively by natural malefics.

The other side of the stoiy are those factors that bring the opposite effect, which
are as follows.

Factors that make the lagna weak and unfavorably disposed are:
 1. When not occupied or aspected by its lord
2. When occupied or aspected by natural malefics, particularly if in a
bad condition such as debilitated, in an enemy's sign, in a sandhi,
gandanta, combust or defeated in a planetary war
3. When hemmed by malefics or Papa Kartari Yoga,
4. When not occupied or aspected by natural benefics or lords of
auspicious houses.
5. When adverse yogas form in the lagna.

Factors that make the lagna lord weak and unfavorably disposed are:

1. When in a poor dignity like debilitation or great enemy/enemy sign

2. When in an unfavorable condition like sandhi, gandanta, combust, or
defeated in a planetary war
3. When associated with or aspected by natural malefics
4. When hemmed exclusively by natural malefics
5. When placed in adverse houses (6, 8,12) and under the additional
malefic influence
6. When its dispositor is ill-placed, in a bad condition, and afflicted.

These conditions all relate to variants of the category of yogas referred to in

Jyotisha as arishta, or "unfortunate" combinations that can especially impact the
health of the person and indicate the potential for other types of misfortunes as
well.

Several of these conditions apply to the birth chart of former U.S President,
Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The lagna itself has but one planetary influence, the aspect of the natural
malefic, Mars, who is also the 8th lord, and the worst functional malefic for the
this lagna, since it rules two dussthanas. There is no modifying influence of
natural benefics on the lagna, nor do any fall in the angles, which can protect the
health.

The lagna lord, Mercuiy, goes to the dussthana, 6th house, while Mercury's
dispositor, a debilitated Saturn, goes to the 8th house of incurable diseases, with
a maraka 7th lord. This lagna lord is also in a kendra relationship with the
Rahu-Ketu axis, with the Nodes in their debilitation signs.

In August of 1921 at the age of 37, he was struck by the polio virus while
vacationing, which left him paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his
life. It was in his Satum-Rahu period. Saturn's condition speaks for itself, and
Rahu is giving the results of Mars, the 8th lord aspecting the lagna. Note also
that from dasha lagna, the sub-period lord, Rahu, falls in the 8th house.

The remarkable thing about his life is that this personal tragedy did not prevent
him from becoming one of the greatest of U.S Presidents, guiding the nation
through both the Great Depression and World War II.

The lagna lord can be well-placed by house, but if it is with the 6th, 8th, or 12th
lord, and in one of the "bad" conditions of Jyotisha, it can prove veiy
unfavorable for the health of the body.

Legendary Hollywood actress, Elizabeth Taylor, is most known from her

penchant for expensive jewelry, passionate love affairs, and eight marriages to
seven men. What is not generally known about her is that she battled a large
number of health issues throughout her life.

She was bom with scoliosis, which gave her chronic back pain, suffered two
near fatal bouts of pneumonia, one of which required an emergency
tracheotomy, did numerous stints in rehab for alcoholism, had a hip-joint
replaced, a benign brain tumor removed, skin cancer and the list goes on.

The only influence on the lagna is the aspect of an exalted Jupiter, but
retrograde. Her lagna lord, Mars is not badly placed, going into the 4th house.
The problem lies with the fact that Mars is combust, and is with the 8th lord
Mercury, the worst functional malefic for this lagna.

Her marital woes can be seen by the influence of the natural malefics, Saturn,
Mars and Rahu on her 7th house/7th lord.

We saw earlier the influence of natural benefics on the lagna of Angelina Jolie,
but there are also malefic influences on her lagna lord. The Moon is well
placed in the 9th with Jupiter in its own sign, but is also closely conjunct Mars
and aspected by Saturn as the 8th lord. She's acknowledged that earlier in her
life she had some very severe emotional problems, cut herself at times, and once
even contemplated having herself killed by a "hit man." In recent history,
because she is a high risk for breast cancer (her mother died from it), she's had
much publicized pre-emptive mastectomies.
The chart of another movie star, Marlon Brando, also shows the influence of
both Jupiter and Venus on the lagnaf but his lagna also gets hemmed exclusively
by natural malefics.

In Venus-Jupiter he won his first Oscar and was at the height of his physical
appeal. However, later in life he became very obese with Jupiter in the lagna, a
kapha planet in a kapha sign and hemmed exclusively by the two worst natural
malefics.

problematic is the degrees of Mars and Mercuiy, which put them only 32
minutes apart. His lagna lord. Mars, gets defeated in a planetaiy war with the
6th lord of disease in the 2nd house of food.

The following chart presents a mixture of factors related to the lagna/lagna lord,
both good and bad. On the one hand the lagna receives the aspect of its own
lord. Mars, and has the natural benefic, Venus. But on the other hand:

• both the lagna/lagna lord receives the aspect of a strong Saturn

• Venus is the 12th and maraka 7th lord.
• the mildly malefic Sun is in the lagna, very closely conjunct Ketu
and aspected by both Mars and Saturn.
• All the natural malefics are in the kendras versus one benefic.

During the Sun period this person had some major health issues requiring
multiple surgeries. Nothing quite afflicts the Sun and Moon like the Nodes,
especially if they are very close, as they are here. Remember that these are
the points where eclipses take place, and so the Luminaries and the Nodes are
quite inimical to each other.

I've used the chart of Stephen King to illustrate Maharaja Yoga brought about by
the exchange of the 1st and 5th lords, and as an example of how such an
exchange veiy effectively cancels debility.

In both the Moon and Mars mahadashas he remained a hugely successful,

highly-paid author. However, the influence of natural malefics on his
lagnaAagna lord had there own story to tell. In June of 1999, he had the
following experience:

"He and his family were staying at their lake house in western Maine. It was late
afternoon and King was finishing up his daily four-mile walk. As usual, he was
carrying a book. Although he often reads while walking - on dirt roads, for
instance, or down Broadway while visiting New York - he was not reading at
the moment, for this stretch took him up a steep hill alongside a small highway.
Suddenly a blue Dodge minivan crested the hill and pinballed King off its
windshield. He came down in a clump. His head was bleeding, his lap seemed to
be turned sideways and he saw that a bone in his right leg was pointing in the
wrong direction, skyward, bulging out of his jeans.

"Stephen King is addicted to writing. It isn't a matter of liking to write or even

loving it. He needs it, chemically, the way years ago he needed his cocaine and
his beer, sometimes a case a day. "Writing is just this great big conduit, this
outflow pipe that keeps the pressure nice and even," he says. "It just pours all
this [expletive] out All the insecurities come out, all the fears — and also, it's a
great way to pass the time."

And if he hadn't been able to make a career of it?

"Oh, I'd be dead. I would have drunk myself to death or drugged myself to death
or committed suicide or some goddamn thing."
The placement of the lagna lord in an "inauspicious" house, such as the 6th, 8th,
or 12th, is not a favorable point generally, but how unfavorable it is depends on
additional factors.

We saw in the chart of Franklin D. Roosevelt that his lagna lord Mercuiy in the
6th is disposited by a debilitated Saturn in the 8th. In the chart of John F.
Kennedy, his lagna lord Mercury is in the 8th house, but gets the additional
influence of the two worst natural malefics, who are also the 6th and 8th lords of
his chart, while Saturn also aspects the lagna.

These are the terrible aristha combinations in his chart I mentioned earlier.

A very similar configuration can be seen in the chart of a psychiatric patient who
suffered from severe depression and occasional psychotic episodes.

Her lagna lord, Moon, also goes to the 8th house with the 8th lord, in this case,
Saturn, and is additionally aspected by Mars. The difference is that this arishta
yoga gets the modifying aspect of Jupiter. With the help of an expert therapist
and psycho-pharmacologist, she was able to experience significant relief and
function normally for the most part.

However, the placement of the lagna lord in "inauspicious houses," takes on a

new coloration when it falls in its own or exaltation sign. This can happen in the
case of Aries, Taurus, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.

For anyone with a Libra ascendant, if the lagna lord goes into the 6th house, it
places it in its exaltation sign. In Hepburn's case, the lagna lord, Venus, is
additionally very close to its point of extreme exaltation, while its dispositor,
Jupiter is well placed in the 9th house.

Though Venus is also with the natural malefic, Saturn, it is the yogakaraka for
both the birth lagna and Chandra lagna. In her Saturn-Venus period she won
two Oscars, even though she was over 60 years of age.

A similar configuration can be seen in the chart of actress Jennifer Ainston.

Towards the end of her Venus major period, she was cast in the role of Rachel in
the TV sitcom. Friends, and the result was great fame and fortune.

The lagna lord Venus in its own sign in the 8th house conjunct Mars
astrologically reflects the great sexual magnetism that the legendary actress,
Bette Davis, exuded both on screen and off. In her Jupiter-Venus period she
was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress three years in a row. In the birth
chart, Jupiter is an exalted 3rd lord of the dramatic arts in the 10th house of
career, while Venus is with an exalted 10th lord forming a powerful 1-10 raja

Both Jupiter and Venus are well placed, they are connected through
dispositorship, and from the dasha lord Jupiter, Venus is exalted in the 10th
house.

These three charts illustrate that when the lagna lord goes to a dussthana, but is
in its own or exaltation sign, it can still give very "strong and favorable" results.
Note, however, that in all three examples, the lagna lord is additionally
configured in significant raja yogas. Yet each of these lagna lords additionally
comes under the influence of a natural malefic, which has its own unpleasant
implications.
Even if a lagna lord falls in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, and is not in its own or
exaltation sign, yet is without the additional influence of natural malefics or
other bad conditions, it need not be so unfavorable.

In the chart of Deepak Chopra, the lagna lord Saturn falls in the 6th house
without the conjunction or aspect of any other natural malefic. Besides being in
its own nakshatra, always a favorable factor for any planet, the strongest
planetary influence comes from the close angular relationship with Jupiter.
Whereas he first came to great fame as an author and "New Age Guru" in his
Jupiter major period, he has enjoyed continued great success this way in his
Saturn mahadasha. This result of the Saturn period can be seen more obviously
from his dashamsha, where Saturn is a vargottama yogakaraka placed in the
10th house with the 9th lord Mercuiy, involved in a 9-10 exchange with the
Moon.

The placement of his lagna lord, Saturn, in the 6th house in the birth chart
reflects his life-long interest in health and healing. His father was a doctor, and
he became a doctor. The first books that he authored were Quantum Healing
and Perfect Health. Later, he became a leading spokesperson for Ayurveda, the
holistic health science of ancient India, and to this day he conducts popular
seminars entided Journey into Healing.

Still, he may have encountered some health issues, accidents, injuries, litigation,
enmity etc, since moving into his Saturn period beginning in 1999. I simply
don't know.

In the chart below, the lagna lord, Mercury goes to the 12th house with the 12th
lord, but is otherwise unassociated/unaspected.

As he is a close friend with whom I am in frequent contact, I can attest to the

fact that he suffered no major health issues or serious illnesses in his Mercury
major period.

What this placement has meant in his life is that with the lagna lord in the house
of moksha with the 12th lord of moksha, the pursuit of this goal has been a major
theme in his life. He is somewhat reclusive, spends a good deal of time with his
eyes closed meditating, seeking "the kingdom of heaven within," teaches yoga
science and meditation, and in his Mercury-Sun period was conducting spiritual
retreats in Hawaii with his wife. Not a bad manifestation of the 1st lord in the
12th with the 12th lord! The key here is that there is no additional influences of
natural malefics.

Then there is the curious case of Indian cricket star, Sachin Tendulkar. For a
long time there was a lot of speculation about his correct birth time and lagna.
Information surfaced that confirms a time of 12:59 PM and a 17-31 degree of
Cancer lagna. Assuming that this is correct, the condition of his lagna/lagna
lord is not what you might expect for a person of his stature. His Moon, as the
lagna lord, goes to the 6th house and is under the influence of the Rahu-Ketu
axis. The lagna itself has the influence of one benefic (Jupiter) and an exalted
malefic (Mars). Yet it was exacdy in the Moon major period that his star in the
world of cricket began to rise, and the height of his career came in the Rahu
period. How can this be understood? A large part of the answer lies in his
dashamsha (D-10).

But such powerful and favorable conditions in D-10 could not give this level of
achievement and status if there was not some promise in the birth chart itself.
Based on what has been presented thus far in this article, see if you can find
anything that might account for this great level of success and fame in the Moon
and Rahu major periods before reading further.

In my view, two interpretive principles come into play. The first is the strength
and condition of the dispositor, though in an unusual way. The astrological
reasoning underlying Parvata Yoga is that the dispositor of the logna lord is
strong and in an angle, or trine. The texts stipulate "exalted or own sign" but
interpreting this more liberally, not just literally as Shri Rao always suggests,
this would include any strong condition the dispositor of the lagna lord.

In Sachin Tendulkar's chart the dispositor of his lagna lord, Moon, is Jupiter. It
does fall in an angle but is in its debilitation sign, Capricorn, though with an
exalted planet I have shown repeatedly in my article "An Enigma Wrapped in a
Mystery" how such neecho bhanga planets can and do give very strong results,
such that I believe qualities of an unusual kind of Parvata Yoga apply to this
chart.

I would also contend that the special raja yoga mentioned earlier does also. The
natural malefics Rahu and Saturn are in houses 6th and 11th, there are two
natural benefics in the angles, and an exalted planet aspects the logna. Recall
that his greatest success occurred in his Rahu period, which would be giving the
results of both of these yogas. His lagna lord in the 6th house, while his 6th lord
is with an exalted Mars reflects the fact that from a young age his life has been
all about competition and battling with his "enemies," or opponents. Yet, like
any sportsman, I am sure that he has had to deal with any number of injuries,
however, minor.

At the beginning of this article I mentioned that the placement of the 1st lord by
house, provides important clues as to a person's karmic proclivities in this
lifetime, a key experience area as it were. So often people come to astrologers
wanting to understand more about their "purpose or mission in life" or about
their dharma, the "truth" of who they are. This is a not an easy or simple
question, and pre-supposes that everyone has some one thing that is their life
purpose, which I simply don't think is true for most. Our karma and karma-
samskoras can impel us in different directions at different times in our life.
However, seeing the placement of the lagna lord by house certainly is one of the
factors that is important to evaluate this way, as illustrated in the last three
examples.

In Conclusion

The birth chart represents an individual's prarabdha karma, or karmic allotment

in this lifetime. However, these indications exist in the coded symbol language
of planets, signs, nakshatras, houses, and all the other elements of natal
astrology. They must be deciphered. It is no easy matter given the complexity
involved. Where to begin? My recommendation is that you start with a very
thorough evaluation of the lagna/lagna lord, that you begin with...The Pillar of
Life.

Summary of Learning Points

• As a point of departure in interpreting a birth chart, evaluating the

lagna and the langa lord are a good place to start, as these are two of
the most significant factors in a horoscope.

• The lagna lord in the lagna is the most favorable situation, provided

favorable point, especially if they have a source of strength such as
own sign, exaltation, directional strength etc, and a good lordship,

• However, if these natural benefics are simultaneously moolatrikona

lords of Trik houses, while there is the additional influence of natural
malefics plus marakas, they will still form arishta yogas that can
bring health crises and other misfortunes.

• While natural benefics occupying or aspecting the lagna, or falling in

the kendras, normally protect the health, retrograde benefics will
not.

• The complete lack of any influence of natural malefics or the lords of

Trik houses on the lagna is also a favorable point.

• Regardless of any other influence, the condition of the lagna being

vargottama, helps to strengthen it.

• Benefic yogas, such as Gaja Kesari, forming in the lagna also help
make it strong, as do yogas such as Lagna Adhi Yoga, in which
natural benefics will be aspecting the lagna, and the houses on each
side of it.

• The best condition for the lagna lord is when it has a good dignity or
other sources of strength, and falls in an angle or trine house,
provided it does not have the modifying influence of natural
malefics, or is hemmed exclusively by natural malefics.

• A less obvious good condition of the lagna lord is when it obtains a

 good dignity in a number of divisional charts, particularly the
mvamsha,

• A lagna lord becomes more favorably disposed when it is with or

aspected by natural benefics, especially if these benefics are strong
and have a good lordship.

• Likewise, if it is exclusively hemmed by natural benefics, this is a

highly favorable condition.

• When a number of these good conditions of the lagna lord combine,

it becomes exceptional as in the case where the lagna lord is exalted
in an angle and receives the aspect of Jupiter, which gives the highly
benefic Chamara "Yak Tail" Yoga. In ancient India, the yak tail was
an insignia of royalty and high status.

• The over-all condition and position of the dispositor of the lagna lord
is also very important in evaluating the kind of results it can give. If
the lagna lord's dispositor is strong and well-placed, this significantly
enhances the kind of results it can give. There is even a specific yoga
based on this concept in which the lagna lord exalted or in own sign
and in an angle/trine houses gives Parvata "Mountain" Yoga.

• Additionally, the dispositor of the dispositor of the lagna lord can be

assessed, and if in its exaltation or own sign in an angle/trine house,
it gives Kahala "Big Drum" Yoga.

• Lasdy, it is best if the lagna lord is not poorly dignified, combust,

defeated in a planetary war, in a sandhi, hemmed by natural malefics,
placed in an inauspicious house (6, 8, or 12) or associated with or
aspected by natural malefics or lords of inauspicious houses.

• With regards to house placement, however, if the lagna lord goes

into its own or exaltation sign in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, it can
give more favorable results.

• An exchange between the 2nd and 9th lords while the lagna lord falls
in an angle or trine gives the benefic Khadga "Sword" Yoga, that can
be especially good for wealth.
• One variant of Bheri "Kettle Drum" Yoga, defined by when planets
are in the 12th, 1st, 2nd, and 7th houses, while either the 9th or 10th
lords are strong and well placed, is a benefic yoga related to the
lagna that can make an individual a powerful, prominent personality.

• The 9th lord in own or exaltation sign and in an angle or a trine, and
the Moon in own or exaltation sign and in an angle or trine aspected
by Jupiter gives a superior, highly benefic Gauri Yoga.

• A special raja yoga is formed when natural malefics fall in houses 3,

6, and 11, while the natural benefics falls in angle houses, or an
exalted planet is in or aspects the lagna.

• The dispositor concept is further elaborated in two more complex

yogas. Parijatha "Celestial Coral Tree" Yoga occurs when the
dispositor of the lord of the lagna and the navamsha lord of that
dispositor is in an angle or a trine, own or exaltation sign.
Kalpadruma "Tree of Plenty" Yoga is formed when the lagna lord,
its dispositor, and the dispositor of that, and the navamsha lord of the
last is in an angle, trine, own or exaltation sign."

• The placement of the lagna lord in a particular house highlights the

significations of that house in the person's life experience. It marks a
key area, particularly if the individual runs the major period of the
lagna lord or that of associated grahas.
