Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports, photographs,
laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s comments
should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component – CET B:
Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies within
+/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the variation is more
than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in consultation with the Chairman
BoE.
Assignment
Instructions to students:
1. The assignment consists of 3 questions: Part A – 1 Question, Part B- 2 Questions.
2. Maximum marks is 25
3. The assignment has to be neatly word processed as per the prescribed format.
4. The printed assignment must be submitted to the course leader.
5. Submission Date:
6. IMPORTANT: It is essential that all the sources used in preparation of the assignment must be suitably
referenced in the text-
7. Marks will be awarded only to the sections and subsections clearly indicated as per the problem
statement/exercise/question

Introduction
The aim of this course is to give exposure to the students to use the concepts of computer aided design to
develop wireframe, surface and solid models; feature based geometric models and parametric models of
mechanical components. Students will be taught the guidelines and rules of drawing to create orthographic
views of components and assembly of machine tools, IC engine components, fasteners, riveted joint and
transmission system components. Students will also be trained to use CAD tool to develop geometric models
of mechanical components and industry standard drawings.
Part -A (2+ 2 + 1 = 5 Marks)
In today’s intensely competitive global market, product enterprises are investing in CAE technologies
to improve their product quality and to meet customers’ requirements.
Reverse engineering is the design process in which new product is developed based on the existing
product. In some situations, there may be a physical part/ product without any technical
details, such as drawings, bill of material, or without engineering data. Digital engineering
technologies are assisting the product development cycle for improving the productivity and
reducing wastages.
Reverse Engineering is the only engineering technique that helps in shortening the product
development cycle
Debate on the above statement related to the usage of reverse engineering process in the industries
for the product development. Prepare the document with relevant supporting references and
illustrations. The page limit for this comprehension is not more than 5 pages including images.
Debate on the above statement considering the following:
1. Survey on existing reverse engineering methods used for product development cycle.
2. Comparisons of Conventional engineering design method to reverse engineering methods
with Merits and demerits using suitable case studies
3. Legality in implementing reverse engineering
4. Stance taken with justification
Part B
B1 (10 Marks)
CAD software tool is capable of converting orthographic drawings to 3D solid models. Modern CAD
tools are capable of generating complex geometric shapes. This part of assignment tests the
students’ ability to use these aspects of CAD software.
Problem statement
The students have been supplied with 2D drawings of components of carburetor. Study the drawings
in detail and create 3D geometric models of all the components and assembly structure using CAD
software tool. Missing dimensional details, if any, can be suitably assumed.

Figure 1: Carburetor assembly
Prepare a report consisting of the following:
B.1.1 Geometric model of components and illustration in the form of captured images.
B.1.2 Assembly model with Interference analysis report with interactive images.
B.1.3 Brief procedures of the development stages of the CAD model with illustration in
the form of captured images.
B.1.4 Detailed drawings for components and Assembly drawings with numbering with bill of
materials..
Note:
• Use ISO standard A3 size layout for assembly drawings
• Files of geometric models of the parts and their assembly along with their respective parts
and assembly drawings should be submitted to the course leader in a CDROM.
B2 10 Marks
Complex geometric shapes of irregular shape and variable contours can be designed and
modelled using surface modeling techniques. CAD software tools use variety of surface
generation, geometry editing and clean-up techniques to create complex models. Due to the
richness in information of surface models, their use in engineering and design environments can
be extended beyond just geometric design and representation.
Figure 3: Expected surface model with
Figure 2: Scanned wire-frame model rendering
4
Problem statement
The scanned data of a race car model is given in wire frame IGES format. Students have to
generate the surface model from wire frame data. The geometric model has to be rendered by
applying material property and analyzed for continuity using Surface curvature analysis to ensure the
quality of the generated surface.
Guidelines for Submission
B.2.1 A brief write-up on stages of the geometric modeling of race car with captured images
showing different stages
B.2.2 Perform surface curvature analysis on the generated/ selected surfaces and comment
on the quality of the surface.
B.2.3 Create drawing for the same surface model and show major dimensions in a standard
drawing layout
