STS Assignment: Different ways to save, protect, and preserve the environment or mother
Earth. Different ways to reduce pollution.
1. Lessen the use of plastic & the R’s of waste management.
As we all know, garbage is a major problem that we face that affects us and our
environment. The pollution it emits and the space that it takes up. And when burned, it
adds onto the problem of global warming – with its air pollution. Most of our garbage –
plastic mainly – ends up in our ocean, damaging coral reefs, suffocating aquatic life or
the marine life in general. And do we want these? No.

- 3’s of waste management. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. I’m sure we hear this a lot, and
that we are aware of it. But are we doing it?
Reduce –the amount of materials and goods you buy. Have self-control and limit yourself.
Reuse - the act of taking old items that you might consider throwing away and finding a new use for them.
Recycle – This is the most well-known. There are materials that can be recycled that are carefully
processed at recycling centers - to be processed into other goods like paper packaging.

- Use paper bags, or get your own bags during grocery runs instead of single-use
plastic bags
- reuse plastic water bottles
- No to plastic straws. Save the turtles.

2. Less (if possible, avoid the) consumption of luxurious items

- Such as fast fashion
Where consumers are purchasing clothing made of less lasting materials, causing
them to discard the clothing at a faster rate. Prompting them to go buy again.
And aside from the clothing people discard there also the rejected cloths that
doesn’t go out to the public. All this leading to a stockpiles of clothing dump. And
according to reports, 85% Of Clothes End up in Landfills or Burned. In addition, the
fashion industry also uses toxic chemicals, dangerous dyes, and synthetic fabrics that
seep into water supplies where it is made.

- Yes, clothing is a basic need. But do we really need that much?

It’d be better to buy quality products that would last longer. Quality over quantity.
Think about it, if people don’t buy those products, there wouldn’t be a reason for
factories to produce more.
3. Conservation of energy
- To generate electricity, most power plants burn coal, crude oil, or other fossil fuels.
Although this method of creating energy is relatively inexpensive, our planet pays
the price – carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are just a few of the
byproducts that come from these methods.
- And these gases, greenhouse gasses – although is a natural phenomenon, and is
necessary for survival on earth – the extra carbon wastes trap too much heat,
leading to various environmental issues. Like global warming, climate change, rising
of water sea levels, and many more.

In conserving energy, we could:

- Be mindful of our water consumption.
- Turn of electrical appliances when not in use. (Turn off the lights)
- Use energy efficient appliances.
- Consider using solar power (solar panels).

4. Tree planting
- Speaking of air pollution, we could plant trees to help bend the curve. As they grow,
they help stop climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air, and just like
any plant – they release oxygen into the atmosphere. They mitigate the effects of
droughts, they clean the air, purify water, protect the immediate environment from
storms, prevents soil erosions, provide sources of food, and add grace and beauty to
our homes and communities.

5. Population Control – family planning and sex education

- More population means more consumption of resources. And the more we
consume, the more the Earth suffers.
- Educate people about family planning, and incorporate population growth and
family planning into political and economic courses in schools.

6. To be environmentally aware, & to spread awareness

- Being environmentally conscious is not just being aware of your and your actions'
influence on the environment, but also going above and beyond to reduce that
impacts you could do in your surroundings. It is also important that we at least try to
influence and spread awareness of how the earth could be if we won’t act now.

7. Live a simple life – consume less, more conservation.
