your work, see the attachments)
(iv) Sketch and follow all necessary design procedures in your work
(v) Submit on 23th May 2022 at 1400 -1500hrs for all groups at office 2 (W9R section, Civil
Engineering department), deduction of 15 marks will be done in every 300 seconds, Late
submission beyond 1510hrs will not be marked.
(vi) Copying and pasting is strictly prohibited (Zero mark will be awarded to both groups)
1. Check the adequacy of timber Beam for Bending, Bearing, Deflection and Shear given the
following specifications:
Effective span 3.5m, Length of bearing plate 50mm,Load 3.45kN/m, Load Duration is Medium
Term, section is 100 x 250mm, material used is Podo Grade 75% seasoned dry condition,
Deflection Limit 0.003L.
2. Timber roof beams spaced on a grid of 1200mm are required to span 4.25m supporting a total
dead load plus imposed load of 1.5kN/m2. Determine the suitability of 100 x200mm solid timber
joist, Use Cedar 50% with moisture content 15%, medium term loading.
3. 2 no of 3.35mm diameter, 65mm long are used to connect SC3 timber, seasoned dry exposure
and the loading is Long term. The nails penetrate 45mm through the head side timber. And also
penetrates 20mm into the 45mm point side timber. Calculate the lateral load F, for the group.
4. A 2.5m Post in height supports a total long term load of 28 kN applied 50mm eccentric to x-x
axis. Check the adequacy of 100mm x 250mm Podo grade 60% section. The column is restrained
at both ends in position and one end in direction. The timber used is seasoned dry.

5. A flat roof spanning 4.0m is to be designed using timber joists at 600mm center to center. The
loads from the proposed roof construction are as follows:
Asphalt = 0.40kN/m2 Ceiling = 0.15kN/m2 other weight Caused by dead load 0.30kN/m2. The
imposed roof load may be taken as 0.7kN/m2 and the load due to the weight of the joists as
0.1kN/m2. Check the adequacy of 100 x 250mm, Podo; strength class 40% in dry condition
medium term loading.
6. A timber column in strength class SC2 is 4 m in height with a rectangular cross-section of
100mm x 150 mm. The column is restrained at both ends in position but not in direction
and is subjected to dry service condition.
i. Determine the maximum long-term axial load that the column can carry.
ii. Check whether the column can carry a long-term axial load of 12 kN and a bending moment of
0.8 kNm about its major axis.
7. A collar tie roof construction comprises of two rafters and a collar tie 50 x 100mm, connected
to the rafter by M8 steel bolts. If a pine grade 50% was used and the tensile force was found to be
0.87 kN, check the suitability of the collar tie for medium-term loading.
8. A 150 mm x 200 mm interior tension member has a notch as shown in figure below. Calculate
the reduction in load carrying capacity due to the notching, given material is Podo grade 75%
seasoned dry, long term loaded.
9. Determine the suitability of 75 x 150 mm economic purlin size to suit a span of 2.0m. The purlin
carries long term load of 2.5kN/m and inclined at 10˚. Use Cypress grade 75%.

10. Check the adequacy of spaced column given the following specifications:-
The column 4.0 m long carries an axial load 24kN long term, seasoned Cedar grade 60% dry. The
column consists of 2 elements 36 x 125 mm each. The members are glued together. The space
between two elements is 60mm. Two members joined by 420 mm end spacers and 275 mm
intermediate spacers. The distance between one pack to another is equal which 600mm is. The
column is restrained at both ends in position but not in direction. Assume that the dimensions and
shear stress at the end and intermediate spacers are all sufficient.
11. A rectangular timber post from grade 60% podo is required to support a very short term loading
Q in dry weather condition. The post is restrained at both ends in position and in direction. Table
20 shows the post has equivalent slenderness ratio λeq and slenderness ratio λ of x and y
respectively; determine the relation between x and y.
12. The figure below shows 2 no .3.75mm dia. x 75mm long round wire nails used to join two
pieces of seasoned grade 40% cypress.
F 50mm
45mm F
100mm
Comment on suitability of the joint, if the timber is exposed to dry weather condition and is to be
loaded for very short term.
13. A 50mm x 100mm seasoned grade 40% pine used as a purlin carries a medium-term load of
1500N/m. The pitch of the roof is 20° and the ends of purlin are held in position in line on rafters
of 4500mm c/c.
Check the suitability of the section and give your comment if the purlin will be exposed to dry
weather condition.

REFERENCE CALCULATIONS OUTPUT
For point side:
BS 6258 Consider the illustration below
Table 57 Basic load on
the point side,
Fp = 174.56N
Since Fp Basic load
(174.56N) < Fh (250.8N): = 174.56N
Basic load = 174.56
Then
Take the design load = 174.56N
Permissible load for the group, F = n x basic load x K48 x
K49 x K50
K49 = 1.0 for dry exposure condition
K50 = 1.0 when number of nails in line < 10
F = 2 x 174.56 x 1.12 x 1.0 x 1.0 = 391.01N
Therefore
Lateral load, F,
Lateral load for the group, F is 391.01N for the group
Table 50
= 391.01N
