16.0 DE-ICE BOOT INSTALLATION

16.1 PROCEDURE

16.1.1 Required materials:

 CM No. 29
 CM No. 31 or CM 37
 CM No. 32
 CM No. 33
 CM No. 34
 Roller (Rubber or Nylon)
 Gauge (Multimeter)

Reference documents:

Goodrich Installation-and Removal Procedures:

Report No. 59-728()

16.1.2 Starting at one end of the boot, carefully use a razor blade scraper to cut the adhesive
between the boot and the blade while pulling the boot away from the blade.

16.1.3 After boot is removed, use a vibratory sander with no coarser than 60 grit sandpaper to
remove any remaining adhesive, filler or sealer in the boot area.

Note:
Polane paint must be allowed to cure a minimum of eight hours before boot installation.

16.2 PREPARATION OF BLADES FOR BOOT INSTALLATION

Warning:
Cleanliness is essential for proper boot adhesion. All solvents must be free of
contaminants. Brushes and cloths must be clean and lint free.

DO NOT TOUCH SURFACES ONCE THEY HAVE BEEN PREPARED.

Testing internal resistance on electrical de-icing boots. The value as stated in the list in the
Goodrich Manual or lists of comparison of the manufacturers of de-icing boots or to the
specifications provided in the inspection check off record should be reached.

16.2.1 Position new boot as previously noted prior to removing the old boot. Place boot with
centerline on lead edge of blade and mark outer edge with grease pencil.

Mask off area 0.5 inch (12,7 mm) outside of pencil line (See Figure 42) and the shank O.D.

16.2.2 Clean area to be booted with approved solvent like CM 29 or CM 30 (other solvents may
adversely affect polane coatings). If paint has a high gloss, very light sanding with 400 grit
sandpaper is desirable prior to cleaning. Wipe dry with a clean, lint-free colth.

16.3 ADHESIVE APPLICATION

NOTE:
For best results, apply adhesive at room temperature (18° - 24°C / 65° - 75°F). Drying time
will vary with temperature and relative humidity. Do not apply adhesive if relative humidity is
above 90% or if the temperature is below 10° / 50°F.

16.3.1 Mark centerline on glazed side of de-icer (for later alignment on blade leading edge).

16.3.2 Roughen RAPCO de-ice boot bonding area with sand paper (grain 60 or similar) crosswise
along the complete boot. Applies for RAPCO boots only!

16.3.3 Moisten a clean cloth with approve solvent CM 29 or CM 30 (see List of Consumables).
Clean unglazed (back) surface of the de-icer. Change side of cloth frequently to avoid
contamination of clean area.

16.3.4 Allow solvent to evaporate.

16.3.5 Apply adhesive as follows:

a) Mix approved adhesive CM 31 (see List of Consumables) thoroughly and brush one
even coat on de-icer and 1,5 inches (3,81 cm) on strap (where applicable).
Allow adhesive to dry, minimum 1 hour!

b) Apply a second even coat of adhesive CM 31 (see List of Consumables) to the de-icer
and an even coat on the blade.
Allow the cemented surface to dry until the adhesive reaches the tacky stage (slightly
sticky to the touch), usually 10 to 30 seconds!

16.4 BOOT INSTALLATION

NOTE:
For best results, install boot at room temperature (18° - 24°C / 65° - 75°F). Drying time will
vary with temperature and relative humidity. Do not install boot if relative humidity is above
90% or if the temperature is below 10°C / 50°F.

16.4.1 Rolling De-Icer Boot onto Blade

Starting at the shank end, place de-icer on end mark and align centerline with blade leading
edge.

Work outward toward the tip, tack the de-icer centerline to the leading edge of the blade.

a) If de-icer becomes misalign, pull up with a quick motion and reapply de-icer.
b) If adhesive is removed from either surface, remove de-icer, clean affected surface,
and reapply adhesive.
c) If adhesive becomes too dry, reactivate with a clean lint free cloth dampened with
solvent CM 29 (see List of Consumables).

When correctly positioned, roll firmly along the centerline with a rubber roller.

Gradually tilt roller and carefully work boot over either side of blade contour using care to
avoid trapping air under the boot.

Roll outwardly from centerline to edges. Be especially careful to work out excess material at
outboard edge of boot before other edges are completely rolled down. If excess material at
edges tends to pucker, work out puckers smoothly and carefully with fingers.

Use a forefinger to work out any “puckers” or waves in the boot material along the side
edges. Such waves are not acceptable!

Use an edge of a nylon roller to firmly roll down the tapered side and outboard edges of the
de-icer boot.

See Fig. 43!

NOTE:
A metal roller us usable as long as it is used within 0,1875 inch (4.763 mm) from any edge,
i.e. the roller does not contact (and possibly damage) any portion of the heating element.

16.5 INSPECTION OF DE-ICER BOOT INSTALLATION

When the de-icer boot installation has dried a minimum of eight hours, use a thumb to check
around the entire edge of the boot and make sure it is adhered tightly to the blade surface.

Apply the approved adhesive mixture to any areas which are not tightly cemented. Allow
adhesive to dry to tacky state, then press area in place.

Recheck the dimension from the blade ferrule to the boot to make sure the de-icer boot edge
is the correct distance from the shank of blade. If blades are installed in propeller assembly,
ensure the boots are in the same location radially to avoid propeller imbalance.

16.6 PAINT SEALER APPLICATION

Mask the blade and boot so that when sealer (CM 32) is applied, it will cover (minimum
overlap) as follows:

Blades (all models):

a) all areas of exposed cement

b) Max. 0,25 inch (6,3 mm) of the blade surface around the edge of the boot
(marked area).
c) Max. 0,5 inch (12,7 mm) of the de-icer boot edges.

NOTE:
Total sealer coat band width should be approximately max. 1,0 inches (25,4 mm).

d) Prepare paint sealer (CM 34 with CM 35 and CM 36),

e) Apply two even cots of the paint sealer to the area around the de-icer boot.
f) Remove all masking tape immediately, and allow to cure.

16.7 INSPECTION PROCEDURES

a) Inspect the edge of the de-icer to see if de-icer is cemented tightly. If de-icer is not
tight, re-cement these areas. If not previously accomplished, verify correct distance
from blade ferrule to de-icer edge.

b) Perform an electrical resistance check.

NOTE:
Resistance checks can be performed using a standard ohm meter.

c) The following adhesive cure times are recommended:

 12 hours before starting the aircraft engine.

 24 hours before operating the de-icer system.
