Transcripts

4. Listening

Speaker 1 (male): Are you both waiting for the flight to New York too?

Speaker 2 (male): No, I’m flying to Hawaii.

Speaker 1: How exotic. Are you going on holiday?

Speaker 2: Kind of, my sister lives there so I’m going to visit her and have a bit of a
holiday at the same time.

Speaker 3 (female): You are lucky, my sister lives in Alaska. Are you going to try surfing? It’s
very popular.

Speaker 2: Yes, my sister surfs but it’s far too energetic for me. I’m going to do a lot of
relaxing on the beach.

Speaker 1: What about you? Where are you going?

Speaker 3: Costa Rica.

Speaker 2: For a holiday?

Speaker 3: No, I’m going to do some volunteering in the jungle.

Speaker 1: That sounds adventurous. Where are you going to stay?

Speaker 3: In a tree house. I can’t wait.

Speaker 2: Wow, that’s brave. I would be too scared of the insects. How long are you
going to stay?

Speaker 3: I’m going to stay for a month in the jungle and then I’m going to travel to
the beach and spend one week there relaxing.

Speaker 1: That sounds like a good plan.

Speaker 2: Why are you going to New York?

Speaker 1: I’m going to attend a work conference. It’s not as exciting as your plans but
I’m excited to see New York. I have two days free afterwards so I’m going
to see a show and visit some galleries.

Speaker 2: New York is an amazing city. You are going to love it.

Airport announcement: Flight number AV456 to Costa Rica is now boarding at gate number six.
Please make your way to the gate. Have your boarding card ready.

Speaker 3: Oh, that’s me. It was so nice to meet you both. Have a great time in Hawaii
and I hope your work conference goes well. Bye!

Additional game.
Put the students into small groups. Give them both sets of cards and ask them to put them face down. They take
turns picking up a card from each pile. If it is a match, they say the word and then keep the cards. The student

to complete it individually first and then compare their ideas with their partners. Review the answers as a group

plan their trip using the prompts. Monitor carefully and help with vocabulary. When the students are ready, put
them in groups and tell them they need to ask and answer questions to learn about each other’s travel plans.
During the task, monitor from a distance and write down any errors or good examples of language that you can
hear so you can provide some post-activity language feedback. During feedback, ask the students to tell you if
their plans were similar or different.
