MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES – SWITZERLAND KENYA Mission – MOMBASA Project

MSF Switzerland (MSFCH) is a humanitarian medical organization providing emergency medical aid to
populations in need based in Dagahaley and Mombasa County.

The objective of our project is to provide Access to health care for Adolescent and Youth Population
(AYP), with specific focus on Young Key Populations (YKP) affected by social violence and health care
exclusion. The selected candidate will be reporting technically to the Project Medical Referent.

Job Title : Nurse


Work Location : Mombasa
Length of contract : 6 months fixed term contract(starting Mid Jun.2025)

Main Purpose

Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, proto-
cols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and
continuity of care for the targeted population.

Accountabilities

• Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/


precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and
procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working
environment. Respect médical records confidential at all times.
• Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and
consulta-tions through daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health
education of the pa-tient (and family) when necessary.
• Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so
they can receive the necessary treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and
appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit
• Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are
assist-ed, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER
and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies,
detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the
doctor when necessary
• Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization
• Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution
of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
• Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms,
con-sumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral
handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participation in data
collection and re-port sharing to the doctors/supervisors.
• Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and
maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs
inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material
is taken out of nursing ar-ea/wards without prior authorisation, etc.)
• Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user
manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
• Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under
his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and
procedures

Project specific accountabilities:

1. Pharmacy Supplies Management


• Ensure consistent availability of essential medicines, tests, vaccines, and medical supplies.
• Conduct regular stock inventories to minimize wastage and prevent shortages.
• Oversee proper storage, handling, and dispensing of medication in adherence to health
regulations.
• Coordinate with NAM and Pharmacy technician to facilitate timely replenishment of supplies.

2. Family Planning Services


• Provide counseling and education on various contraceptive options.
• Facilitate access to family planning services, including distribution of contraceptives.
• Monitor patient adherence, side effects, and provide alternative recommendations as necessary.

3. Hepatitis and STI Awareness & Prevention and treatment.

• Lead hepatitis awareness campaigns within the drop-in center and surrounding communities.
• Organize and implement hepatitis screening programs for at-risk individuals.
• Promote vaccination initiatives and ensure accessibility to hepatitis vaccines.
• Educate clients on prevention methods, including harm reduction strategies.
• Provide clinical management of STI and hepatitis.

4. HIV Prevention & Education


• Promote and distribute preventive tools such as condoms and lubricants.
• Advocate for the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).
• Work closely with field teams to strengthen HIV education and awareness efforts.

5. Team Support & Capacity Building


• Facilitate team coordination to enhance service delivery efficiency with the DICE with support of
the NAM.
• Offer emotional and professional support to ensure a motivated workforce.
• Act as a bridge between management and field teams, ensuring smooth communication.

6. Quality Assurance & Timely Reporting


• Monitor and evaluate service delivery to maintain high standards of patient care.
• Ensure accurate documentation of cases, interventions, and reports.
• Recommend operational improvements based on data driven
• Maintenance of IPC and universal standard precautions in DIC and community activities.
• Identification of GBV survivors and direct provision of the medical treatments.
• promptly reporting suspected cases for to surveillance for further investigation and response
7. Data documentation, reporting and referral.
• Gather comprehensive patient data for clinical intervention.
• Maintain confidentiality of the patients records and registers.
• Effective and timely referral of patients requiring higher care in coordination with the NAM and
social workers.
• Data collection and summary of the departmental activities on monthly basis

Requirements

• Essential recognized Nurse degree/diploma


Education
• Desirable bachelor’s in science of nursing
• Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGO
Experience • Preferably with key population
• Demonstrable experience in supervising and training others in a team setting
