Q.1 Q.2 Total
1. You are provided with the following
FA1 which is a solution containing 23g of FeSO4.x H2O in 1litre
FA2 which a potassium manganate (VII) solution.
2M Sulphuric acid
Solid P which are sodium oxalate crystals, Na2C2O4.
You are required to determine the
(i) Concentration of potassium manganite(vii) in FA2 in moll-1
(ii) Value of x in FeSO4.x H2O
Theory
Manganate(vii) ions in an acid medium react with Fe2+ and C2O42- according to the
equations below
MnO4-(aq) + 5Fe2+(aq) + 8H+(aq) Mn2+(aq) + 5Fe3+(aq) + 4H2O(l)
2MnO4-(aq) + 5C2O42- (aq) + 16H+(aq) 2 Mn2+(aq) + 10CO2(g) + 8H2O(l)
Procedure I
Weigh accurately 1.4g of P into a clean beaker. Add about 100cm 3 of distilled water and
stir well to dissolve. Transfer the resultant into a 250cm 3 volumetric flask and make up to
the mark with distilled water. Label the solution FA3.
Pipette 20 or 25cm3 of FA3 into a clean conical flask. Add an equal volume of 2M
sulphuric acid using a measuring cylinder. Heat the mixture to about 60 0C and
immediately titrate the hot solution with FA2 from the burette until the endpoint is
reached. Repeat the titration until you obtain consistent results. Record your results in
Table 1 below.

Carry out the following tests on W and record your observations and deductions in the
table below. Identify any gases that evolved. (18 marks)
TESTS OBSERVATIONS DEDUCTIONS
(a) Burn a small
amount of W on a
crucible lid or
spatula end.
(b) To 5 drops of W,
add about 1cm3 of
water and shake.
Test the mixture
with litmus.
(c) To 5 drops of W,

(III) chloride
solution.
(d) To 5 drops of W,
add sodium
carbonate solution.
(e) To 5 drops of W,
add 2-3 drops of
Brady’s reagent.
(f) To 5 drops of W,
add 2-3 drops of
acidified potassium
manganate (VII)
