Why Do Some People Talk in Their Sleep

Verse of holy qur’an

(QS. Az-Zumar: 42)

Allāh takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during
their sleep,

Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified
term.

‫۝‬

Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

“Allāh takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during
their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a
specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”

“Just as the brain remains active during sleep and causes someone to talk unconsciously, this
verse reminds us that sleep is not merely rest — it is a spiritual process where Allah takes the
soul, holds it, and returns it if life is still decreed.”
Part 1. Writing An Explanation Text

Why Do Some People Talk in Their Sleep

Have you ever heard someone talking in the middle of the night while fast asleep?
Have you ever been told that you said something strange or funny while sleeping, but you
couldn’t remember any of it? Why do some people talk in their sleep? Is it a sign of
something serious, or is it just a normal part of sleeping? While sleep may seem like a time
when the body and brain completely shut down, the truth is much more complex. Talking
during sleep, a condition known as somniloquy, is one of the many ways our brain stays
active, even when we’re unconscious.

Sleep talking happens due to a number of factors and stages in the sleep cycle. It
usually occurs during the transitions between non-REM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) and
REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep stages, particularly during lighter sleep when the brain is
still partially alert. At this stage, the part of the brain responsible for speech may activate
briefly, causing a person to say words or phrases without awareness. Sometimes the speech is
just mumbling; other times it forms clear, complete sentences. This condition is often
triggered by external and internal factors, such as stress, anxiety, sleep deprivation, fever, or
even certain medications. It is also commonly found in people who experience other
parasomnias, like sleepwalking or night terrors. In some cases, sleep talking tends to run in
families, suggesting a possible genetic influence. Because it happens involuntarily, most
people are unaware that they talk in their sleep unless someone tells them.

So, why does this matter? Even though sleep talking is generally harmless and doesn’t
require medical treatment, it can sometimes affect the quality of rest for both the person
talking and the people around them. It may also be a sign of deeper sleep disturbances if it
happens frequently or is linked to emotional stress. Understanding why people talk in their
sleep helps us become more aware of how our brains work during rest and reminds us that
sleep is not just a passive state, but an active and dynamic process. Just like algorithms guide
what we see online, our brain's internal “systems” guide what happens during sleep, including
the words we don’t even know we’re saying.
