isolated because they are new to the neighborhood and have different cultural

Subject: Interesting class I had

Dear Basu,
I am glad to write you after a long time. I am fine here and hope
you are also well there. I’m excited to share my experience of
an interesting class which I had yesterday.

3
You know that I had recently joined grade 12. There I got to
interact with many teachers. But my encounter with physic
professor, Moti Bhusal was the best one. It was mine first lecture
and as you know I’m fond of space, time and aerospace and more
such things. Coincidently, He also started talking about motion,
singularity, space time fabric etc. I was genuinely amazed. During
this lecture I got to interact with him by asking questions. If any
other professor could teach like this, I would attend classes all
day along.

Anyway, I guess My email is little bit long. Hope you are also
enjoying your high school life in US. Convey my best regards to
your family members. See you soon in US.

2) Write an essay on the advantages and disadvantages of

living in a nuclear family.

A nuclear family is made up of parents and their children living

together in one home. This setup offers a unique way of living that
many people find comforting and practical. The small size of the
household encourages close interactions and open communication
among its members. It also helps create an environment where
decisions can be made quickly, and each person’s needs can be
closely watched.

In Nepal, traditional extended families have been a long-standing

part of society. However, with modernization and urban growth,

4
there has been a noticeable shift toward nuclear families. In urban
areas like Kathmandu, many young couples prefer to live separately
from the larger family system. This trend is driven by several factors.
Modern education and job opportunities encourage young people to
move to cities, where a smaller household is more practical. The
cost of living and space constraints in cities also make a compact
family model more appealing. Despite these changes, many in rural
parts of Nepal still value the support and shared responsibilities that
come with larger, extended families. Nonetheless, the rise of
nuclear families marks an important social change, reflecting the
influence of modern lifestyle choices on traditional values.

One clear benefit of a nuclear family is the strong bond that forms
among its members. With fewer people in the household, parents
are often able to spend more quality time with each child. This
focused attention can help children learn important life skills and
values at an early age. Additionally, decision-making is usually more
straightforward. With fewer voices involved, the family can quickly
agree on matters ranging from daily routines to special occasions.
This can lead to a well-organized home where roles and
responsibilities are clear, and where each member feels valued and
understood.

Furthermore, a nuclear family often provides a calm and private

space for its members. The simple structure of the household
allows for a peaceful living environment, where conflicts can be
resolved easily, and family traditions can be nurtured without
external pressure. This private setting also gives parents the
freedom to instill their own values and beliefs in their children,
contributing to a strong sense of identity and personal growth.

While there are many benefits, there are also some challenges
associated with living in a nuclear family. One of the main concerns

5
is the limited support network. In larger families, extended relatives
like grandparents, aunts, or uncles often share the responsibilities
of care and provide extra emotional support. In a nuclear family, this
support may be missing, which can lead to feelings of isolation,
especially during times of stress or crisis.

Another challenge is the increased pressure on each family member

to manage many roles at once. Parents may find themselves juggling
work, household duties, and the education and well-being of their
children without the backup that a larger family might offer. This can
sometimes lead to stress and burnout. In addition, without the
presence of older family members who might offer advice and
experience, younger members might miss out on learning from the
wisdom that comes with age.

Moreover, the nuclear family structure can sometimes make it

harder for children to build strong connections with a broader range
of family members. The absence of regular interaction with
extended family can limit a child’s exposure to different viewpoints
and traditions, which are valuable for personal growth and
understanding of cultural heritage.

In a Nutshell, the nuclear family model brings both benefits and

challenges. The close-knit nature of a small household encourages
strong personal bonds and allows for focused parenting and quick
decision-making. At the same time, the limited support network can
lead to feelings of isolation and extra pressure on individual family
members. In Nepal, as in many parts of the world, the rise of nuclear
families reflects the changes brought by modernization and
urbanization. Understanding these dynamics can help families
make informed decisions and work towards creating a balanced,
supportive, and nurturing home environment.

4) Write a short autobiography of a famous person you

know well.

I, Stephen Hawking, was born with an insatiable curiosity about the

world around me. From a very young age, I found myself fascinated
by the mysteries of nature and the universe. This early wonder paved
the way for a lifelong journey into the world of science, where I
dedicated myself to understanding complex ideas and sharing them
in a clear and approachable manner.

Throughout my academic years, I pursued my passion by studying

science and exploring new theories that could explain how our world
works. Every challenge I encountered only deepened my

conventional limits. I always believed that every question deserved
an answer and that every obstacle was an opportunity to learn.

My career led me to a path where I could combine my love for

research with my commitment to education. I wrote books,
delivered lectures, and engaged in discussions that made science
accessible to everyone. I aimed to break down complex ideas into

8
simple terms so that people from all walks of life could appreciate
the beauty and power of scientific discovery.

I have been truly honored to learn that I am considered a favorite by

understanding that we all share.

5) Write a news article about digital payment systems in

Nepal.

The Rise of Digital Payments in Nepal

Kathmandu, March 1, 2025

Nepal is experiencing a rapid shift towards digital payment systems,

transforming the financial landscape and reducing reliance on cash
transactions. With the increasing use of mobile wallets such as e-
Sewa, Khalti, and IME Pay, along with mobile banking services,
digital transactions have become more accessible and convenient for
individuals and businesses alike.

The Nepal Rastra Bank has played a crucial role in promoting cashless
transactions by implementing policies such as the National Payment

9
Switch, improving interoperability between financial institutions. The
government’s encouragement of online tax payments and digital
financial services has further boosted this trend.
Digital payments offer numerous benefits, including speed, security,
and transparency, making financial transactions more efficient. E-
commerce, ride-sharing services, and businesses have significantly
benefited from the ease of cashless transactions. However, challenges
such as limited digital literacy, cybersecurity risks, and internet
accessibility in rural areas remain hurdles to full adoption.

Despite these challenges, the future of digital payments in Nepal looks

promising. With technological advancements, increasing financial
awareness, and strong government support, the country is steadily
moving towards a more digitally connected and cashless economy.

6)Write a description of your favourite comedian

explaining his/her personality, acting, performance and
uniqueness.
→ Jim Carrey: A Master of Comedy and Expression

Jim Carrey is one of the most beloved comedians of all time, known
for his unmatched energy, hilarious facial expressions, and over-the-
top performances. Whether he’s making silly voices, pulling
exaggerated faces, or moving like a human cartoon, he has a way of
making people laugh effortlessly.

His acting style is full of life and creativity. In movies like Ace
Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, he
plays eccentric and unpredictable characters that leave audiences in
stitches. But beyond his goofy side, Carrey has also proven his depth
as an actor in films like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind, showing that he can balance comedy with emotion.

10
What makes Jim Carrey truly unique is his ability to find humor in
anything. Even the simplest situations become hilarious in his hands.
He once joked, “Behind every great man is a woman rolling her
eyes.” His humor is not just funny but also relatable and full of
personality.

both laughter and emotion, has made him a true legend in

7) Garbage management is a big problem in most of the

cities in Nepal. Write a letter to the editor to be published
in the daily newspaper suggesting the ways of solving
garbage problems.

Lamatar-5, Lalitpur
Feb 11, 2025

The Editor
The Kathmandu Post,
Subidhanagar , Kathmandu

Dear Sir,
I am writing to bring attention to the worsening garbage
management problem in our cities. Despite repeated complaints to
the concerned authorities, no significant action has been taken to
resolve the issue. The unchecked accumulation of waste is polluting
our environment, posing serious health risks, and diminishing the
beauty of our cities.

Since local bodies have failed to take effective measures, we now

appeal directly to the Government of Nepal to implement urgent
11
and long-term solutions. The government should enforce strict
waste management policies, increase the frequency of garbage
collection, and provide separate bins for recyclables, organic
waste, and non-recyclables. Strict monitoring and penalties for
improper disposal should also be introduced to prevent negligence.

Public awareness programs are equally important. Schools, media,

and community organizations should educate citizens on the
importance of waste segregation, composting, and responsible
disposal. Additionally, investing in modern waste processing and
recycling plants through public-private partnerships can create a
sustainable waste management system while generating
employment opportunities.

Garbage management is not just a local issue—it is a national

concern. If immediate and effective action is not taken, the situation
will only worsen. Therefore, we urge the Government of Nepal to
prioritize this issue and take decisive steps for a cleaner and
healthier future.

“INTERSTELLER”

Review of Interstellar: A Cinematic Journey Beyond the

Stars
Interstellar, directed by Christopher Nolan, is a remarkable film that
blends complex scientific concepts with an emotionally driven
narrative. Released in 2014, the film explores humanity's struggle for
survival as Earth faces environmental collapse. The story follows
Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey), a former pilot turned
farmer, who embarks on a space mission to find a new habitable
planet for mankind.

The film is set in a near future where Earth’s resources are running
out, and crops are failing. A secret NASA program sends Cooper and
a team of astronauts through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a
new home for humanity. The film explores not only space travel but
also themes of love, sacrifice, and time.

The visuals in Interstellar are nothing short of stunning.

Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema captures breathtaking shots
of distant planets, the vastness of space, and the iconic black hole,
Gargantua, in exquisite detail. The special effects are superb, and
the depiction of the black hole and its gravitational pull, which
distorts time, is a scientific marvel in itself.

13
Hans Zimmer’s score adds an extra layer of emotion to the film, with
its ethereal and haunting soundscapes. The music complements
the high-stakes drama and deep philosophical themes explored in
the movie.

Matthew McConaughey’s performance as Cooper is one of the

standout elements of Interstellar. His portrayal of a man torn
between his love for his family and the survival of humanity adds
emotional depth to the story. Anne Hathaway, as Dr. Brand,
provides a solid performance, balancing intellect with emotional
vulnerability. The supporting cast, including Jessica Chastain and
Michael Caine, also bring gravitas to their roles.

One of the most unique aspects of Interstellar is its exploration of

scientific theories such as time dilation, the theory of relativity, and
the concept of a fifth dimension. The film brings these ideas to the
audience in a way that is intellectually stimulating while remaining
accessible. The scientific accuracy behind the depiction of black
holes and wormholes was supervised by theoretical physicist Kip
Thorne, ensuring the film remained grounded in real physics, making
it both a visual spectacle and an educational experience.

However, the film's complexity and length may not appeal to

everyone. The narrative can be difficult to follow at times, with its
intricate discussions of time, space, and dimensions. Some viewers
may find certain plot points overly abstract, while others may
struggle with the emotional weight of the story.

Despite these challenges, Interstellar is a deeply impactful film. Its

themes of love, sacrifice, and the survival of the human race
resonate on a personal level, while its depiction of space and time
pushes the boundaries of what we understand about the universe.
The film leaves the viewer questioning not only the future of
humanity but also our place in the cosmos.

14
In conclusion, Interstellar is a cinematic achievement that
successfully combines scientific exploration with a deeply
emotional story. It’s a film that challenges the mind while stirring the
heart, making it an unforgettable experience for any viewer.

BOOK REVIEW
Sirish KO phool (The Blue Mimosa)
→ Shirish KO Phool is a great Nepali literature written by Bishnu
Kumari Waiba popularly known as Parijat. It was first
published in 1965 and was awarded Madan Puraskar (2022
BS) as the first modern novel of Nepali literature. Although the
book is only sixty-six pages long, it is capable of leaving a
powerful impact on the readers. It is all about human passion,
one sided love and tragedy in life. The sad narrative makes an
expedition into the deepest human heart. Through her main
female character, Sakambari, Parijat has exposed her own
bitter feelings of empty life. It makes the readers intensely
emotional when pure human sentiments are victimized by the
unseen forces. The narrator, Suyog, a former World War
soldier living a single middle-aged life, falls in love with his
drinker friend’s sister, Sakambari. She is presented as a
strong, independent and - I.B. Nirdosh, New Capital College
spiteful woman with atheistic attitudes who resents looking
weak in front of her male counterparts while Suyog is a lowly
mortal who sees Sakambari to be stronger than him.
Overpowered by the love for Sakambari, Suyog feels a sense
of self-hatred. One day finding her alone, he kisses her
revealing his love towards her. Later, Suyog stops visiting her.
He later knows that Sakambari was ill and she committed

15
suicide. Sakambari is presented as Shirish (blue mimosa), a
flower, that is born with beauty and withers down to the earth
by the one kiss of a bee (insect). The book is intensely lyrical in
its language. This novel tries to show how typically a Nepali
man perceives a woman to be, and their feeling about their
wife. But it never reveals the reason for the silence that was
present in Sakambari’s life. Her feelings towards Suyog were
still a mystery. Although I had many unanswered questions,
the story touched me. For me, it showed a normal, guilty
human being’s life. To compete with men like Suyog and be
able to stand in the same level as them, women must learn to
be like Sakambari. The ending is very gloomy but it makes me
clear that human beings suffer more by the things which are
inexplicable and unknown.

10) Write an article for a national daily on “The status of

women in Nepali society”.

17
The Status of Women in Nepali Society
Kathmandu, March 1, 2025

Nepal, a country rich in culture and tradition, has made significant

strides in gender equality in recent years. However, the status of
women in Nepali society remains a topic of debate, as women
continue to face various challenges despite progress in legal and
educational reforms. Understanding the complexities of the
situation requires looking at both the advancements and the
persistent barriers that affect women’s lives.

Historical Context and Cultural Factors

For centuries, Nepali society has been deeply influenced by

patriarchal norms, where women have often been relegated to
household duties and less visible roles in public life. Traditional
practices like dowry, child marriage, and the preference for sons
over daughters have reinforced gender-based inequality. While
these customs are slowly being challenged, they continue to have a
lasting impact on how women are treated in many rural and urban
areas.

Progress in Education and Employment

One of the most notable advancements for women in Nepal has

been in the field of education. Over the past few decades, the
government and various NGOs have worked tirelessly to promote
women’s education, and the number of female students in schools
and universities has steadily increased. Women are now pursuing
careers in fields once dominated by men, such as medicine, law,
and engineering, and are making their presence known in politics
and governance. The country now has female representation in high
offices, including a female president and deputy speaker in the

18
parliament, showcasing a positive shift in gender equality at the
national level.

However, women’s participation in the workforce remains relatively

low compared to men. The gender wage gap persists, with women
often receiving lower wages for the same work and facing
discrimination in higher-paying job sectors. Rural women, in
particular, continue to face limited access to education and
employment opportunities, keeping them in poverty.

Challenges Faced by Women in Nepali Society

Despite improvements in education and political representation,

women in Nepal still grapple with numerous challenges. Domestic
violence, sexual harassment, and discrimination in both public and
private spheres are common issues. Many women continue to
endure societal pressure to conform to traditional gender roles,
which can limit their personal freedom and opportunities.

In rural areas, women are disproportionately affected by poverty and

lack access to basic resources like healthcare, clean water, and
sanitation. Women also bear the burden of unpaid domestic labor,
which limits their opportunities to participate fully in economic and
social activities.

Legal Protections and Social Movements

The government of Nepal has enacted various laws to protect

women’s rights, including laws against domestic violence, human
trafficking, and sexual harassment. In addition, the adoption of a
new constitution in 2015 has guaranteed gender equality, ensuring
that women have equal rights in property, marriage, and
inheritance. However, enforcement of these laws remains weak,
and many women are unaware of their legal rights, leaving them
vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.

19
The rise of social movements, particularly in urban areas, has
helped raise awareness about women’s rights and has given women
a platform to voice their concerns. Campaigns addressing gender-
based violence, child marriage, and women's health have gained
momentum in recent years, encouraging more women to stand up
for their rights.

The Way Forward

To further elevate the status of women in Nepali society, it is
essential that the government, civil society, and private sectors
work together to ensure equal opportunities for women in all
spheres of life. This includes improving access to education,
ensuring women’s economic empowerment, and addressing
gender-based violence through better law enforcement and public
awareness.

Promoting a shift in societal attitudes towards women’s roles and

capabilities is equally important. Education, particularly of men and
boys, is key to challenging outdated gender norms and creating a
more equitable society for all.

In conclusion, while Nepal has made considerable progress in

improving the status of women, much work remains to be done. A
collaborative effort from all sectors of society is crucial to ensure
that women in Nepal are not just participants in society, but equal
contributors to its growth and prosperity.

The writer is a gender rights advocate and social researcher based
