Introduction

The Vijayanagara Empire, established in 1336 CE by Harihara and Bukka of the Sangama dynasty, was one

of the most powerful and culturally rich empires in South India. It flourished on the banks of the Tungabhadra

River and reached its zenith under rulers like Krishnadevaraya. Apart from military and economic strength,

the empire is best remembered for its grand architecture, promotion of literature, music, and dance. The ruins

of Hampi today stand as testimony to the empire's glory.

Architectural Features

The architecture of the Vijayanagara Empire is a unique blend of Hindu temple architecture and Islamic

influences. Notable features include high gopurams, mandapas, open courtyards, and stepped wells.

Famous Structures:

- Virupaksha Temple, Hampi: The oldest functioning temple in India.

- Vittala Temple Complex: Known for the iconic Stone Chariot and musical pillars.

- Hazara Rama Temple: Decorated with bas-reliefs from the Ramayana.
