Opening Communications To A Control

• Before communications can begin between the server and a
control, you must first create a network definition file.
• To create a network definition file choose New ... under the
file menu.
• Before the file can be created the server will prompt you to set
the network options.
• You must specify the port the control is connected to, the baud
rate, the mode of communications, and the parity and stop bits.
• Once all the network options are set click OK to begin the
network scan.
• If the mode is set to be Master/Salve, it may take several
minutes to complete the network scan.
• Once the symbol tables are read, the network definition file
will be complete and can be saved for future retrieval.

Synchronization Introduction

pg. 229

Synchronization Introduction
• This section describes how generator and bus
matching occurs and how all conditions are
verified by the synchronizer functions.
• Synchronization is the matching of the output
voltage wave form of one synchronous
alternating current electrical generator with the
voltage wave form of another alternating
current electrical system.

pg. 230
Five Conditions For Synchronizing
• For the two systems to be synchronized and connected in
parallel, five conditions must be considered:
– The number of phases in each system.
– The direction of rotation of the phases.
– The voltage amplitudes of the two systems.
– The frequencies of the two systems.
– The phase angle of the voltage of the two systems.
• The first two conditions are determined when the equipment is
specified, installed, and wired.
• The synchronizer matches the remaining conditions (voltage,
frequency, and phase) before the paralleling breakers are
closed.

• Transfer Capacity is the amount of generation
capacity that must be on the bus before a transition

LS units that are online (Online Capacity)
• When online capacity is above the transfer capacity
the transition is enabled
• Two variables must be configured:

– Transfer Capacity Units

Load Demand
• Load Demand control is an active peaking device
– As the Total Demand at the mains increases above a given
level single LS units will be started and brought onto the
bus. If the load decreases single LS units will be stopped
– Time delayed and immediate starts and time delayed stops
are available at different demand levels
• Load demand will only parallel with the mains and
should only be used in Baseload mode

pg. 283

Load Demand Filter

• Spikes in total mains demand can cause
excessive starting and stopping during peaking
operation
• To reduce the inefficiency that spikes can
cause all demand values are filtered with a
butterworth low pass filter

Calibration Menu
• While each unit will be factory calibrated at Woodward
prior to shipment, there are bound to be some
inputs/outputs affected by external wiring and/or
interfaces (relays, transformers, etc.) that will require
calibration at the site during commissioning.
• The Calibration Menu allows calibration of all the
analog inputs to the EGCP-3, as well as the speed bias
and voltage bias outputs.
• All calibration points in the EGCP-3 are used to make
the actual value of an input, such as generator voltage,
read out on the respective display screen of the EGCP-3
the proper value of the signal being monitored.

• There are a total of 19 keys on the keypad.
• Each of the keys has the following function(s):
• ALARM/EVENT LOG KEYS:
ALARM / EVENT
The ALARM/EVENT key is used to access the Active
Alarms and the Alarm History Event log. If pressed once,
the active alarms will be displayed on the right hand LCD
screen. When multiple alarms are logged, the up and
down scroll keys will allow you to navigate within the
active alarm list. The Alarm History Event log will store
up to 100 events, as more events happen the oldest
alarms will be dropped off to make room for the newer
events. These events will be cleared on a reset of power.

pg. 316
Operator Interface
• ALARM/EVENT LOG KEYS:
ALARM CLEAR The ALARM CLEAR key is used to acknowledge and clear alarm events from
the active alarm list. To acknowledge and clear alarm and shutdown events
a Security Code of Operator Level or higher is needed. After selecting the
ALARM/EVENT key:

1. Pressing the ALARM CLEAR key once will de-energize Discrete Output
#9, Audible Alarm. This will happen without selecting the
ALARM/EVENT key and without a Security Code entered.
2. If the fault that caused the alarm has been cleared pressing the ALARM
CLEAR key again will reset the alarm and the control will resume action.
This action will occur without a Security Code entered.
3. If a Security Code of Operator Level or higher is entered in the control then
the second press of the ALARM CLEAR key will clear the alarm of the
active alarm list. The alarm will remain in the alarm history event log.

• NAVIGATION and ADJUSTMENT KEYS:
The SCROLL KEY is used to move the cursor up, down , left and right. It
SCROLL also is used to increment and decrement values while in the configuration
menus.

The ESCAPE KEY is used to move upwards (out of) the configuration
menu levels.

ENTER
The ENTER KEY is used to move downwards (into) the configuration
menu levels.

• STATUS and CONFIGURATION KEYS:

STATUS The STATUS KEY, when pressed, will put both left and right LCDs into the
status display mode. The status displays provide information about
i different items of engine and generator set operation. See the STATUS
MENU buttons, below for details on the various status keys. There are no
adjustment values in the status

CONFIG The CONFIG KEY, when pressed, will put the right hand LCD into the
... configuration mode. Configuration menu items will be displayed in the right
hand screen. Status information will continue to be displayed in the left
hand screen. Since there are various menu items and adjustments in the
configuration menu, a blinking cursor is provided in the right hand display
when the configure mode is active.

information. The system status display is also the default status display
screen (it is always the first display shown after a power up of the control).
This display shows general information about the operation of the engine
generator set.

ENGINE
The ENGINE STATUS key , when pressed displays status information
about the engine functions and operation. Units that do not control
engines (MC) will not provide status information in this screen.

• Several Modes of Operation in the EGCP-3 LS
– Auto Only – Enables alarms and enables start sequencing
– Test Only – Disables breaker closure. Starts genset and
runs in droop. Alarms are enabled
– Run Only – Starts genset and runs in isoch or droop.
Manual breaker closure. Alarms are enabled
– Auto + Test – Same as test only
– Auto + Run – Starts genset and performs all breaker closure
and load control functions. Start sequencing is disabled
– Auto + Run + Process – Same as Auto/Run but all load
control is from the process setpoints
– Auto + Test + Run – No function in the LS
• For complete mode functionality see attached mode sheet

Mode Switch MC
• Several Modes of Operation in the EGCP-3 MC
– Auto Only – Enables alarms, LOM, start sequencing and master control
– Test Only – No function in the MC
– Run Only – No function in the MC
– Auto + Test – Test ATS. Enables alarms and performs a test ATS
sequence
– Auto + Run – Starts gensets on active bus segment and performs all
breaker closure and load control functions

LON Communications
• LON is the communications protocol used by the EGCP-3 to
communicate load control, sequencing, system configuration
• Diagnostic Features (Lon Messaging – Err Num):
– Same node number detected on Network (1-16)
– Multiple sequencing algorithms detected (261)
• Using Watch Windows Lon Messaging menu troubleshooting
of the communications can be performed
– Master in control
– Start Ready
– Start Nodes
– Online Capacity
– Total Demand

EGCP-3 LS and DSLC/MSLC
• In a retrofit situation a user may want to slowly trade
out DSLC/MSLC for EGCP-3
• DSLC compatibility allows this action
• Exchange all DSLC with EGCP-3 LS then exchange
MSLC with EGCP-3 MC
• With DSLC block enabled EGCP-3 has limited
functionality:
– Real Load Control
– PF Control
– Master synchronizing
