You couldn’t do it in the past. The screen just wasn’t bright enough.

Have you ever thought about what happens to your old clothes after you donate them? It might be
time to start, because this has been causing a lot of environmental problems.
Amit Kalra is a fashion designer from Canada. He said that almost 13 million tons of clothing waste
end up in landfills every year in the United States alone. “This means about 200 T-shirts per person.”
Amit said.
Also, from a recent study, we know that the effect of dumping so many used clothes is horrible.
Recycling them produce tons of greenhouses gases and use huge amount of energy and water.
And not just that, making these clothes is problematic too. A report from 2016 shows that when
making these clothes, the fast fashion companies usually use a lot of plastic which will take thousands
of years to biodegrade.
So, what can we do to reduce these problems? Amit gave us his suggestions. First of all, we should
all start buying fewer clothes. To do that, we should buy clothes of better quality and wear them for
a longer time. Plus, think twice before you throw your clothes away. Maybe sometimes you can just
repair them and keep wearing for a few more years.

I have received numerous gifts in my life and among them, the most exciting
one was the laptop that my father gave me on my last birthday. Last year, I
found out that almost all of my friends had a computer, so I was really jealous,
and I wanted my own computer as well. At first, I didn’t want to ask my father
to buy it for me since I knew a computer cost a lot of money, so I didn’t say
anything. But every time we passed a computer store, I’d stay for a little longer,
and I guessed that when my father realized my desire. Finally, on my 16th
birthday, my father took me to the computer store and bought me a Dell laptop.
I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to show my mother.
Now, I have my own computer, so I can do a lot of things on it. You know, like
playing games, browsing the internet and editing pictures. On the weekends,

I chat with my friends and watch movies on it. It’s so much fun. And with my
computer, I can now make the slides I need for class presentations at home. I
don’t have to go to my friends’ house anymore.

financial conditions, but he chose to sacrifice his other joys to make me

I think the best way to go through hard times is to stay positive. For
example, I had to stay at home for two months this year because of
Covid-19. And since I was living alone, I felt quite lonely. So, I decided
Monica to make myself happy. You know, I started to watch a lot of comedy
movies, read inspiring stories about how to get through hard times,
and start my own live streaming channel! Even though I couldn’t see
any of my friends or family in person, I still felt energetic every day.
Honestly, the best way to get over the difficult times in life is to
make new friends. Like last year, I suddenly lost my job because my
company just went bankrupt. So, as I was looking for another job, I
Barney joined a local support group. The people in the support group had
similar experiences as me, so we naturally had a lot to talk about. We
would comfort each other and help each find suitable jobs. It’s great
to have their support because you know you are not in this alone.
For me, the best way to go through tough times is to develop a new

went on. After a few weeks, we both found a new hobby. I learned to

P1:
Well, I’m not going back to school until September, so I will have like a 3-month vacation. And I have a lot of things
planned already because I want my summer to be as eventful as possible. For example, I’m going to start a reading
challenge, take some painting lessons and become a member of a gym. I think I will have a productive summer.
P2:
I’m a career-oriented person, so in this summer I’m doing everything I can to prepare for my future careers. I just want
my summer to be very productive. For instance, I’m going to work as an intern in a big company, make videos for my
YouTube channel, and sign up for an online course. This is summer is going to be very busy for me, but I think my hard
work will pay off.
P3:
I just finished high school, so I want my summer to be very relaxing. I’m going to focus on having fun, such as crashing
pool parties, having a barbeque at my friend’s house and going to an outdoor concert. This is going to be the best

Employee: Oh, yes. That’s because Professor Lin, who teaches this course, requires to have an interview with each
student who tries to sign up.
Student: An interview?
Employee: Yes. That is, she is going to talk with each student and ask some questions.
Student: Really? I’m so nervous about that.
Employee: Don’t be. She just wants to make sure students are prepared for the course.
Unit 4-Listening-P2-2
Hello, guys! I’d like to explain a little bit about your final scores for this course at the very beginning. In other words,
I’m going to talk about how you will be graded. First of all, 40% of your final score is based on your participation, which
means if you often come to the classes, share your ideas with other students and do the tasks assigned to you in class,
you will get a higher score. But if you often miss classes, always keep you month shut and refuse to do tasks, you may
get a very low score in this part.

One strategy stores use to increase sales is by creating a “second interest”. Basically, the store gets customers to
buy stuff by offering them something else that interests them as a bonus. For instance, the computer store could offer
free computer lessons to its customers on a regular basis. Free lessons keep customers coming back in, so the store
maintains contact with its customers. As a result, since they’re in the store often anyway, whenever they need something
computer-related like a printer or in cartridge, they're more likely to buy it from that store.
Unit 5-Listening-P3
Many popular and well-known fast-food restaurants use a practice known as franchising. In franchising, someone who
wants to open a store or restaurant pays an established company for the right to use the company's name and sell the
company's products. Why do people do that? The reason is that franchising can help the new business reduce the risk of
failing.
For example, if someone wants to open up a pizza restaurant, he may contact a big company that owns a chain of pizza
places, and let’s say it’s called Pizza Town. After he paid the company some money, he can have the right to call his
restaurant Pizza Town and sell Pizza Town's special, one-of-a-kind pizza. Now, since everyone's heard of Pizza Town, as
it's really popular, he doesn't have to worry about whether people will want to eat the pizza or not. He already knows this
pizza will sell well because it's a known thing and that means that there's a better chance the business will succeed.

Welcome to all of you.., can everybody see and hear me?... Good...
I'm Sally, your guide for this tour of the Bicentennial Park...
I hope that you're all wearing your most comfortable shoes and that you can keep up the pace.
So let's get under way on our tour around this wonderful park.
I'll start today with some general background information.
There used to be a lot of factories in this area until the 1960s.
Creating the park required the demolition of lots of buildings on the site, so most of the exciting park space all around you
was originally warehouses and storehouses.
The idea of building a public park here was first discussed when a property developer proposed a high-rise housing
development, but the local community wasn't happy.
If the land was to be cleaned up, they wanted to use the site for recreation. Residents wanted open space for outdoor
activities, rather than housing or even an indoor sports complex.
(1) More people have cars now than ever before. And the number is growing all the time.
(2) At the moment, China is constructing more roads than any other country in the world.
(3) China’s transportation has made huge progress in the last few years.
(4) The US railway network connects all parts of country transporting people from one place to other.
(5) When I was young, it would take me half a day to get to the town.
For me, the best thing about living in the countryside is the noise. That’s obvious because when you live in the city,
you are just surrounded by so many people, and they make noise. It just comes with life. But the countryside is really
peaceful. I now live in the countryside, and it’s very quiet most of the times. The only noise I get is maybe my neighbors
cutting grass.
And the second pro is space. When I was living in the city, I lived in a small apartment, and I just didn’t have a lot of room
to do stuff. Now, I live in countryside. A garden wraps around my house and I can grow flowers and vegetables in it.

in a small forest by a lake and that's Day Six, the highlight for many.
We stay near there for Day Seven because then comes the hardest day, walking through very mountainous country, but
culminating in a swim in the Parteh Waterfall.

Today, we’re going to talk about the famous artist--Claude Monet. Monet was a French artist who is particularly known for
painting in the style called impressionism. Monet was famous during his lifetime, and his paintings remain popular today.
They are on display in art museums around the world.
Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France. He drew and painted as a young man. In the 1860s he became
friends with other artists, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The group of artists became known as Impressionist because
of Monet’s painting called Impression: Sunrise.
One important thing about Monet’s painting is that most of his subjects were from nature. Like other impressionists, he
was fascinated by the way light and shadows change during the day. He often painted the same scene again and again
to show all the changes of light and shadow.

Unit 8-Listening -P3
New studies have shown that learning a new language is less about learning a new language, and more about forming
a new habit. That’s why many language experts have done some serious study about habit-forming. And what did they
find? An important part of learning is repetition and regularity.
Many people complain that they can’t find the time to study a new language. It turns out that habit forming is about focus,
not time. To form a habit you should start by choosing a small and specific behavior that you want to do every day. Let’s
talk about practical ways to turn that big language learning goal into specific habit-forming behavior.
The key is to find an anchor for your new habit, which means something that can remind you of this new habit. We form
new habits all the time without realizing it. Think about how you turn on the coffee pot every morning, brush your teeth
before bed, or lock the door when you leave the house. You didn’t consciously train yourself to form these habits—rather
they came about because of a trigger.
Another thing that is equally important is to create a recipe. Let’s say you want to train yourself to learn English with a
language learning App for 15 minutes everyday. In this case, a small baby step might be to visit that App, no more, nor
less. Your first recipe might look like this: After I brush my teeth in the evening, I will open my language learning App. It’s
crucial for your new habit to be that simple.
Once you have found a recipe that works well, you have done by far the hardest bit. Remember learning a new language
is about adapting a new behavior that can become second nature to you. Once you have properly established the habit,
you’ll find it hard to break—just like any other habit.

Diana: Hi, Tim. Did you read the article about driverless cars?
Tim: Yeah.
Diana: What do you think about it?
Tim: Well, according to the article, self-driving cars are the future of transportation. It reports that major car companies
have spent billions of dollars developing self-driving cars in the belief that there will be a huge market for them.
And what I didn’t know before was that driverless trucks are already delivering beer long distances.
Diana: me too, isn’t it amazing! Apparently, driverless cars will greatly reduce the price of transport for consumers since
there is no human in the loop. In fact, by using these shared electric cars, we’d only need 10 percent of cars on
the road currently.
Tim: But it seems to me that safety might still be a great concern in the near future.
Diana: That’s true.
Unit 9-Listening-P3
Professor: We've been talking about the software development cycle, and today I'd like to move on to the next stage of
that cycle ... testing ... and why finding bugs during testing is actually a great thing. As we know, the quality of
a software product often relies heavily on how well it's been tested. Liz?
Student: Um, just a quick thing. "Bugs" is the word for problems in the program code, correct?
Professor: Yeah, in code or in a computer itself. Generally speaking, every software development project has a group of
testers and a group of developers. Jake?
Student: And they're different people?
Professor: They're generally completely different groups of people. My personal opinion is that they have to be different
groups of people because developers often have a bias toward their own work. And it blinds them to certain
problems that might be obvious to somebody else. So apparently, it's always good to have a different set of
eyes go in there and make sure that everything's tested properly.
Student: But wouldn’t that lead to some troubles? I mean if the bugs are being pointed out by the testers, the
developers won’t be happy, since it’s their work. So, personally speaking, I think it must be difficult for them to
work together.
Professor: Exactly, if the two teams don’t work together, the fixing of the bugs can be delayed and the they might even
end up having to put the product to the market with known bugs in them. But if they do work closely together,
they can be might more efficient.

a. Reported speech
1. Listening for main idea Listen to a podcast on electric cars. Tick the questions that the podcaster answers.
Podcaster: Well today, let’s talk about electric cars. As it’s known to you, an electric car is a car that uses electricity for
power instead of fossil fuel. Recently, electric cars have become very popular. In China, there are over 10
million electric cars on the road already, and more and more Chinese families are expected to switch to
electric cars in the near future. Now, why are electric cars so popular?
First of all, they are very clean. Because they use electricity instead of fossil fuel, they produce no waste gas.
That means electric cars do less harm to the environment than traditional cars.
Also, electric cars are just a lot of quicker. It means that they can go to a certain speed in a shorter time,
but it doesn’t mean they can go faster. For example, some electric cars can go to 60 miles per hour in just 3
seconds. It’s great for those people who want great driving experiences.
But electric cars are not perfect. They have their own problems as well.
Well, the biggest problem is the battery. Usually, it can only last 10 years. That means in 10 years’ time, you
have to get a new one. But replacing the battery pack can be very expensive.
Another problem is the charging. You know, because it’s only been a few years since electric car has re-
gained its popularity, sometimes it’s difficult to find a charger in public places. So, if you’re into driving long
distances, stick to traditional cars for now.

Listen to a lecture in a geography class
P: So yesterday, we talked about water cycle, the transfer of water back and forth between earth and the atmosphere.
Does anyone remember how it happens?
S: Well, from what I remember…water changes from water in lakes and oceans to vapor, and then back to water again
when it falls as rain or snow, right?
P: Exactly. It’s recycled again and again. So today, Let’s talk about how land can affect this cycle. And we’ll first talk about
lake-effect snow. It starts when cold air blows across the lake from the north in winter. Then what will happen?
S: The air is warmed up by the lake water?
P: that’s right. Then it becomes lighter and starts to rise, and clouds begin to form.
S: But how does land affect this process?
P: Well, when the air gets close to the shore, it’s slowed down by the land, and starts to pile up.
S: I guess then it stops it from snowing.
P: That’s not true. What happens is it snows because as the air rises, it cools off and can no longer hold water vapor. So
that’s how land plays a role in this process.

a. Summarizing a lecture
Hi, welcome back to my channel. Today, we are going to talk about global warming. Now, what is global warming? Well,
the name pretty much explains itself. Global warming is the rise in global temperature. Actually, Scientists have been
using many different kinds of instruments to observe the Earth, and they are quite sure that the Earth is warming. In fact,
many of the warmest years on record have happened in the past 20 years.
But why does this happen? The answer is simple: human activities. Human activities, such as the destroying forests and
burning fossil fuels, create extra greenhouse gases. And these greenhouse gases trap a lot of the Sun’s heat, leading to
a warmer Global warming Earth.
Ok, now you might be wondering: the Earth is becoming warmer, what harm can it do? As a matter of fact, it can do a lot
of damage to the Earth and human beings. Global warming can cause a rise in sea levels, which can in turn cause the
loss of coastal lands. Also, global warming will bring more droughts and floods and threaten the animals and plants on
Earth.
So, this brings us to the last question today: what can we do about it? Well, in fact, there are a lot of things we can do.
For example, when we go out, we can walk or ride a bike instead of driving or taking a taxi. If we do this, we can reduce
our carbon footprint. Also, on the weekends, we can all go planting trees in the local parks. Trees can absorb carbon
dioxide and produce oxygen, which can reduce global warming.
That’s it for today, thank you for listening.

1. The Silk Road was a network of trade routes connecting China with the other parts of the world.
2. Merchants travelled on the long, dangerous journey west. Very few of them went all the way to the end.
3. Trade along the road included fruits, vegetables, spices, farm animals, tools, artwork, precious stones and even
language, culture etc.
4. After they arrived in Dunhuang, the traders hired new camels for the next part of the journey
5. Later along the journey, in the central market of Tashkent, some of the businesspeople traded silk for glass and
musical instruments.
6. The first European settlers arrived in North America in the early 17th century.
7. They were escaping from religious persecution and wanted to live in a new world.
8. By 1770, more than two million people lived and worked in the 13 British colonies on the east coast of America.
9. And on 4th July, 1776, the colonies declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and called themselves
the United States of America.
10. Eventually, in 1783 the colonies won their independence from Britain.
Unit 11-Listening-P2-1
No one person invented cinema. However, in 1891 the Edison Company successfully demonstrated a prototype of the
Kinetoscope, which enabled one person at a time to view moving pictures. The first public Kinetoscope demonstration
took place in 1893. By 1894 the Kinetoscope was a commercial success, which was shown publicly around the world.
The first to present projected moving pictures to a paying audience were the Lumière brothers in December 1895 in
Paris, France. They used a device of their own making, the Cinématographe, which was a camera, a projector and a film
printer all in one. At first, films were very short, sometimes only a few minutes or less. They were shown at fairgrounds,
music halls, or anywhere a screen could be set up and a room darkened. Subjects included local scenes and activities,
views of foreign lands, short comedies and newsworthy events. The films were accompanied by lectures, music and a lot
of audience participation. Although they did not have dialogue, they were not ‘silent’ as they are sometimes described.
W: The Civil War occurred from 1861 to 1865 and was fought between the Union and the Confederacy. Although many
people think that the Civil War’s main purpose was to free the slaves, the war began to preserve the authority and
unity of the Union. The Civil War also marked the beginning of a whole new generation of modern wars. It introduced
brand new war plans, weapons, communications, and transportation.

M: I once heard that the war brought changes to the public as well.
W: That’s correct. The war advanced hygiene, medicine, social services, and such. The war was modern not only
because it involved a wide variety of resources but the public as well. The people behind the war front received much
more detailed information and learned about the horrors of the war.
M: Why was that?
W: Photography had been recently invented. Therefore, for the first time in history, many aspects of the war, such as
dead bodies and tensions, were witnessed by the general public. As the war came close to an end, the Confederacy
suffered a great deal of economic difficulties, and its stand on racism, poverty, and dishonesty also suffered.

Kris Dunn: I didn’t grow up like normal kids. In 2003, I was 9 years old, and my brother was 13. We didn’t have a
television, hot water and food because our parents were not there for us. So, we had to go to the local park
to play one-on-one basketball with the other kids to make money. At that time, if we won, we got 20 dollars.
If we lost, we had to run for our lives. Life was hell but that’s how I got skilled at basketball. I couldn’t afford
to lose. Then, in 2009, our father finally came for us, and we moved to Connecticut with him. And I turned
things around in Connecticut. Because I played basketball so well in high school, a lot of colleges offered
me scholarships so I would play for them. Finally, in 2012, I decided to go to Providence College. My college
career was very successful. Four years later, I went to the NBA and my first year’s pay was more than 4 million
dollars. On October 26th, 2016, I played my first NBA game for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

3. Another story is from Anna who has been suffering from claustrophobia—the fear of small spaces.
5. If you seek treatments, there’re effective therapies and medicines to manage and lessen your fear.
6. We'll also look at where our emotional expression, our ways of expressing emotion, came from.
7. Let's look at body movements and postures first. Let's call this category body language.
8. For example, if someone is confident, they often hold their head up and straighten their back.
10. These basic emotions are sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise.

Unit 12-Listening-P2-1
Today, I’d like to talk about the cycle of procrastination( 拖延症 ), which means to be slow or late about doing something
that should be done. But why do we keep procrastinating even when we know it’s bad for us? It may sound strange, but
procrastination is the result of our bodies trying to protect us, specifically by avoiding a task we see as threatening. For
example, when you realize that you have to write a report, your brain responds like it would to any incoming threat. It
releases hormones that kick off fear response. It is in this process that you decide to handle the threat by avoiding it in
favor of some less stressful task.
Moving on to what kinds of tasks are more likely to be procrastinated. Studies of procrastinating university students have
found participants were more likely to put off tasks they perceived as stressful or challenging. And the perception of
how difficult the task is increases while you’re putting it off. In one experiment, students were given reminders to study
throughout the day. While they were studying, most reported that it wasn’t so bad. But when they were procrastinating,
they consistently rated the idea of studying as very stressful, making it difficult to get started.
Unit 12-Listening-P2-2
The main focus of this lecture is the health benefits of laughter. In fact, one study suggests that healthy children may
laugh as much as 400 times per day, but adults tend to laugh only 15 times per day. Other studies find us laughing a little
more than that, but if you ask me, virtually all of us could use a little more laughter in our lives, considering how beneficial
a good laugh can be for our stress levels. So, here are some of the many ways laughter reduces stress. The first one is
that laughter brings the focus away from anger, stress, and negative emotions in a more beneficial way than other mere
distractions. Another thing is that laughter connects us with others. Just as with smiling and kindness, most people find
that laughter is contagious. So, if you bring more laughter into your life, you can most likely help others around you to
laugh more and realize these benefits as well. By improving the mood of those around you, you can reduce their stress
levels and perhaps improve the quality of social interaction you experience with them, thus reducing your stress level
even more.
Unit 12-Listening-P3
Have you ever felt stressed? You’re not alone. Everybody feels stressed at times, even kids. So today, let’s talk about
how stress might help you in some ways.
To start with, stress can help you stay safe. Any time your brain detects a possible danger, it turns on an instant body and
mind alert — called stress. Here how it works. Let’s say you’re crossing the street. Suddenly, you see a car coming fast
around the corner. Your body turns on stress hormones that help you to react quickly. Stress hormones give you extra
energy, focus, and speed. Your eyes open wider. Your mind is more alert. Your attention is focused. Your heart beats
faster Thanks to this stress alert from your body, you dodge that car and jump back to safety.
Another benefit is that stress can push you to get prepared. There’s a test, tryout, or big event coming up in a few days.
You might feel a little stressed over it. That can be a good thing. Let your stress remind you to study, prepare, or practice.
When the big moment comes, you’ll feel less stressed. You’ll feel steady and ready. What if you feel too much stress or
worry about a test or tryout? Too much stress is hard on you. It can lead you to avoid getting ready for what’s ahead. And
that makes it harder to do your best.
Audio Script 27
So, What should we do to prevent this from happening? If you are afraid of or worry about something that’s coming up, or
if you feel butterflies in your stomach just thinking about it, talk to an adult. Ask a parent, teacher, or another adult to help
you learn ways to lower your stress. That way, tests and tryouts — and other big moments — will be easier to handle.

Unit 12-Speaking-P2
When I was in high school, every time I had to give a presentation, my mind just went blank. I never remembered
what to say so I always stuttered. Plus, because I was so nervous and frightened, you could see sweat drops
on my face. Needless to say, my public speaking experience in high school was terrible. And it really hurt my
confidence.
Then in college, I decided to make a change because I realized if I ever wanted to be somebody, I had to be able
to give a speech in public. And the way I chose to fix this problem was to face my fear. Starting from my freshman
year, whenever I had a chance to stand on stage and give a speech, I’d do it. If I was doing a group project, I’d
volunteered to be the speaker to present my group’s research. I also joined public speaking competitions and the
Model United Nations. To be honest, it wasn’t great at first. I still sweated a lot and didn’t remember what to say,
but things got better eventually. Gradually, I felt less nervous and frightened, so my performance got better. At my
senior year, I even got the first prize in one speaking competition.
What I am trying to say is, everyone has their fears in life. Just face your fear and hope for the best. Good things
will come at the end.
