Mental illnesses are often misunderstood and heavily stigmatized, which deeply impacts those who live with
them. While society tends to focus
on visible symptoms such as mood swings, social withdrawal, or reliance on medication, the more subtle and internal struggles—like persistent
self-doubt, overcompensation, and emotional masking—are frequently overlooked. This creates a dual burden: managing the illness itself while
contending with societal judgment, further intensifying emotional distress and diminishing quality of life.
Drawing on Wakefield’s concept of mental disorder—which encompasses both psychological dysfunction and the resulting social harm—it
becomes evident that stigma and misconceptions must be directly addressed. With approximately 12% of the global population affected and
many experiencing comorbid conditions that shorten life expectancy, the need for broader awareness and systemic change is both urgent and
essential.
Supportive environments, mindfulness practices, self-awareness, and—most importantly—the courage to seek help play a crucial role in
alleviating the impact of mental disorders. These elements can empower individuals to confront their challenges with resilience and foster a
more compassionate, understanding society.
