MATHS
Objective
To understand plotting points, shapes, and calculating distances using coordinate
geometry.
Materials Needed
Graph paper
Pencil and ruler
Colored pens (Optional)
Activities
1. Plotting Points and Identifying Quadrants
Plot the following points on graph paper:
(2, −4), (−3, 2), (0, −6), (−6, −2).
Identify in which quadrant each point lies or if it lies on an axis.
Write down the coordinates of any two points and explain their position relative to the x-axis and
y-axis.
2. Triangle Formation and Properties
Plot points:
P(0, −4) and Q(0, 4).
△ △
Find and plot points R and S such that triangles PQR and PQS are isosceles.
Draw the triangles and label all vertices.
3. Equilateral Triangle Coordinates
Draw an equilateral triangle ABC where:
B = (3, 0) and C = (−3, 0).
Calculate and find the coordinates of vertex A.
Plot all points and verify the triangle is equilateral by measuring the lengths of all sides.
4. Collinearity Check
Plot points:
P(−1, 0), Q(0, 1), R(2, 3).
Check if these points are collinear by calculating the slopes between pairs of points.
Write your conclusion based on the slope calculations.
5. Rectangle Coordinates and Area
Write the coordinates of the vertices of a rectangle with:
Length = 5 units
Breadth = 3 units
One vertex at the origin (0, 0)
The longer side along the x-axis
One vertex located in the third quadrant
Plot the rectangle on graph paper.
Calculate the area of the rectangle.
Bonus Question
Find the distance between points (x, −1) and (3, 2) if the distance is 5 units.
Calculate the possible values of x.
If you want, I can also help you solve any of these activities or provide detailed steps for each.
