Chapter 5 - Troubleshooting
General
Correct service and maintenance is essential for the long term serviceability of precision engineered
products such as Cytospin 4. We strongly recommend that an Epredia Service Contract is used to
ensure future reliability, and consistency of performance.
Table 1 shows remedial action to be taken if Cytospin fails to operate.
Table 2 details the error codes and the actions required to clear the errors.
Tables 3 to 6 relate to processing problems and suggested solutions with respect to the preparation of
cells by cytocentrifugation.
The flowcharts show the remedial action to be taken if the Cytospin 4 does not operate correctly.

Be aware of samples used. they may pose a bio hazard

Chapter 9 - Routine Service
Instructions
Annual Service
Before starting to service the instrument, carry out standard earth continuity and insulation
resistance tests. If the instrument fails these tests or does not work, do not proceed with the
service until the cause of the failure has been established and the fault corrected

Make sure that the instrument has been decontaminated and the product return safety
declaration, refer to the Routine Service Schedule, has been signed by the customer before
you start work

Earth Continuity and Insulation Resistance Tests

Carry out Earth Continuity and Insulation Resistance Tests. Earth Continuity should measure less than
0.1Ω; Insulation Resistance should measure greater than 2MΩ. Use the PSU frame or the fixing screw
underneath the instrument for the earth connection

General
Check the instrument for damage or any cracks in any part of the casework. Replace any damaged parts
to ensure safe operation. Check that the mains cable is undamaged. Replace if necessary. Check that
the Keyboard and Display operates correctly, refer to Display PCB and Keyboard Test.

Sealed Head
Check the Sealed Head for any cracks. Replace any damaged parts to ensure safe operation.
Replace the three Sealed Head seals, refer to Appendix C.

Lid Seal
Check the Lid Seal for wear or damage. Replace if necessary, refer to Replace the Inner Liner Seal.

Main Instrument
Separate the Case from the Plinth, refer to Separate and re-join the case and plinth section.
Check that the 8 wire rope mount fixings are secure.
Check that the 4 motor mounting screws are secure and are torqued to 1.8 Nm.
Check that the Motor Controller fixings are secure and are torqued to 1.8 Nm.
Check that the fixings that secure the Out-of-Balance sensor brackets are secure and torqued to 0. 5
Nm.
Re-join the Case to the Plinth and refit the Drive Boss, refer to Separate and re-join the case and plinth
section.
Check that the Lid Lock operates correctly, refer to the Lid Lock Test.

Cytospin 4 Service Manual Issue 5 77

Check the Out-of-Balance system operates correctly, refer to the Out-of-Balance Tests.
Check that the Motor operates correctly, refer to the Motor Tests.
Once the instrument has been checked and reassembled, apply a thin film of silicone grease to the Drive
Boss taper (Part number P01913), refer to Appendix C.
Record the Service in the Service Logbook
