Sheet 1: Introduction & Overview

India is a land of deep-rooted history and evolving democratic values. Two of the most iconic symbols

representing this heritage are the Indian Parliament House and the grand ceremonial avenue, Rajpath, now

renamed as Kartavya Path.

These two landmarks not only reflect the architectural brilliance of the past but also showcase India's journey

from colonialism to independence and now to a self-confident republic.

Why this Case Study?

- To understand the transformation of national symbols in post-independence India.

- To appreciate India's architectural and democratic heritage.

Sheet 2: History of the Indian Parliament House

Background & Construction

- Designed By: Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker.

- Construction Period: 1921 to 1927.

- Opened By: Lord Irwin on January 18, 1927.

- Originally known as the Council House, it served as the seat of the Imperial Legislative Council during

British rule.

Architecture & Design

- Circular in shape with a massive diameter of 170 meters.

- Surrounded by 144 sandstone columns, giving it a classical Roman feel.

- Central chamber flanked by Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha halls.

- Inspired by Chausath Yogini Temple in Madhya Pradesh.

Role in Independent India

- Became the seat of India's first democratically elected Parliament post-1947.

- Witnessed historic moments like the Adoption of the Constitution in 1950, Nehru's speech on independence

eve, and landmark laws.

- Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28, 2023.

- Triangle-shaped, reflecting India's sacred geometry (Vastu).

- Built with eco-friendly materials and has modern facilities.

- Symbol of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).

Sheet 3: Rajpath to Kartavya Path

What was Rajpath?

- Rajpath (King's Way) was a ceremonial road from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate.

- Built during British rule for imperial processions.

- Used every year for the Republic Day Parade.

Why was it renamed?

- Rajpath symbolized colonial dominance.

- In September 2022, renamed Kartavya Path (Path of Duty) to honor democratic values and citizen

responsibility.

- Reflects Mahatma Gandhi's vision of duties over rights.

Modern Features of Kartavya Path

- Red granite walkways with better footpaths and greenery.

- Clean water fountains, lighting, benches.

- Disabled-friendly design and new statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate.
