REFUGE

(The actual prayer to the lineage gurus is available as a separate text).

Inseparable Lama and glorious Chakrasamvara, to your feet at all times I bow down. To the
glorious Bhagavan Heruka Lord of Great Bliss, to Varja Varahi, Ghantapa and so forth and the
assembly of most kind direct and lineage Gurus, I request you to bestow the state of unification
in one lifetime (3x).

In one instant I arise as dark blue Heruka with one face and two hands holding vajra and bell.
Standing with my right leg extended, I embrace my consort red Vajra Varahi who has one face
and two hands holding curved knife and skullcup.

VAJRASATTVA MEDITATION & RECITATION

At all times I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, in all of the three vehicles, in the
Dakinis of Secret Mantra Yoga, in the Heroes, Heroines and powerful goddesses, in the great
beings the Bodhisattvas, and above all at all times I take refuge in my spiritual Master. I myself
will become Heruka for the sake of all living beings, and then I will lead all of them to Heruka’s
supreme state. (3x)

On the crown of my head upon a lotus and moon cushion sit Vajrasattva father and mother
embracing one another, white in colour, each with one face and two hands holding vajra and bell,
and curved knife and skullcup respectively. The father is adorned by six ornaments and the
mother by five. They are seated in the vajra and lotus postures. At their hearts upon a moon disc
P
stands a HUM ( ) surrounded by the encircling mantra rosary. From this a stream of white nectar
flows, purifying unwholesome karmas, defilements, sicknesses and harmful interferences.

OM VAJRA HERUKA SAMAYA, MANU PALAYA, HERUKA TVENO PATISHTA,

DRIDHO ME BHAVA, SUTOSHYO ME BHAVA, SUPOSHYO ME BHAVA, ANURAKTO

Page 4

(21x) (No bell)

Vajrasattva father and mother dissolve into me and my three doors become inseparable from
their body, speech and mind.

YOGA OF THREE PURIFICATIONS

SHRI HERUKA

m*
HE ( ) stands for the selflessness of phenomena
c$
RU ( ) stands for the selflessness of persons
q
KA ( ) stands for the objective suchness and the subjective wisdom, realizing it being without
disharmony
SHRI stands for the meaning of EVAM, the wisdom which has become of one taste with
emptiness. (Think that your mind is purified.)

Within the sphere of emptiness I arise instantly in the form of Heruka and Vajrayogini for the
benefit of all sentient beings.
SHRI HERUKA HAM (3x). (Think that your body is purified.)

OM A AA I II U UU RI RII LI LII E EE O OO AM AH,

KA KHA GA GHA NGA, TSA TSHA DZA DZHA NYA, TA THA DA DHA NA, TA THA
DA DHA NA, PA PHA BA BHA MA, YA RA LA WA, SHA KHA SA HA KSHA, HUM
HUM PHAT (3x)

These three mantra rosaries stand in counter-clockwise circles at my navel radiating light. The
five deities of Heruka emerge from them and go out through my right nostril to the ten directions
driving interferences away. They re-enter through my left nostril and dissolve into the mantra
rosaries at my navel. (Think that your speech is purified.)

ACCUMULATION OF MERIT

A=
At the heart of myself as Heruka a yellow PAM ( ) appears and transforms into a multi-coloured
,=
lotus. On top of the lotus an AM ( ) appears and transforms into a moon disc. Upon the moon
P
disc stands the syllable HUM ( ), dark blue in the centre and edged in light blue. Five coloured
P
lights in the nature of the five wisdoms radiate out from the HUM ( ), filling my body and
purifying the defilements of myself and others. Light goes out from the pores of my skin inviting
the Guru, the host of deities of the Chakrasamvara mandala, assemblies of the Buddhas,
P
Bodhisattvas, Dakas and Dakinis. The light rays dissolve back into the HUM ( ) at my heart.

GURU YOGA

I bow down at the lotus feet of the Vajra Holder, my jewel-like supreme Master; by your great
kindness the state of great bliss is attained in but a single moment.

Page 5
The Abbreviated Sadhana Of Glorious Heruka Five Deities

I bow down to the great hero Shri Heruka, thoroughly pure and proficient in the Vajra path.
I bow down to Vajra Varahi and the great ones who produce attachment.
With great devotion I bow down to all the Heroes, Heroines and powerful Dakinis who dwell in
the places, near places, fields, meeting places, cemeteries and so forth (the 24 places).
P
Goddesses emanate from the HUM ( ) letter at my heart and make offerings.
(External offerings, hold bell and vajra)
SHRI HERUKA OM ARGHAM PRATITZA SOHA,
SHRI HERUKA OM PADYAM PRATITZA SOHA,
OM VAJRA PUSHPE AH HUM SOHA, OM VAJRA DHUPE AH HUM SOHA,
OM VAJRA DIPE AH HUM SOHA, OM VAJRA GHANDE AH HUM SOHA,
OM VAJRA NAIVIDYE AH HUM SOHA, OM VAJRA SHABDA AH HUM SOHA (at end,
bell and damaru).

(Hold bell and vajra)

OM AH VAJRA ANDARSHE HUM, OM AH VAJRA VINI (bell and damaru) HUM,
OM AH VAJRA GHANDE HUM, OM AH VAJRA RASE HUM,
OM AH VAJRA SPARSHE HUM, OM AH VAJRA DHARME HUM.

(Internal offerings)
P
Essence dakinis arise from the HUM ( ) at my heart and holding skullcups with five nectars
make offerings to the deities:

OM SARVA VAJRA KAMINI SARVA BHAKSHAM SHODDHAYA GYU HE VAJRA NI

SOHA.

(Secret and suchness offering)

Heruka and Vajrayogini enter into union and the wisdom of great bliss is generated, and
therefore the merit fields experience bliss and wisdom.

BODHISATTVA VOW

I take refuge in the Three Jewels, confess all my non-virtues individually, rejoice in the virtues of
all beings and firmly keep Enlightenment in mind.
I take refuge until my Enlightenment in the Buddha, Dharma and the Supreme Community.
To accomplish the purpose of myself and others I generate the mind of Enlightenment.
Having generated the supreme mind of Enlightenment, I will care for all beings as my guests.
I will practice the excellent ways of the Bodhisattvas to attain Buddhahood for the sake of all
living beings.
I request the Victorious Ones who may wish to pass beyond sorrow to stay for eons as numerous
as atoms of the earth, and request all the Buddhas to turn the wheel of Dharma. Samsara is
difficult to cross. Although I see my nature is impermanent, in order to liberate all sentient
beings I offer myself immediately to all the Buddhas.

Page 6
The Abbreviated Sadhana Of Glorious Heruka Five Deities

THE FOUR IMMEASURABLES

May all beings become endowed with special sublime bliss.

May all beings be freed from suffering and its causes.
May all beings never be separated from the bliss they have already achieved.
May all beings be freed from delusions and their associated defilements.

OM VAJRA HERUKA SAMAYA, MANU PALAYA, HERUKA TVENO PATISHTA,

DRIDHO ME BHAVA, SUTOSHYO ME BHAVA, SUPOSHYO ME BHAVA, ANURAKTO
ME BHAVA, SARVA SIDDHI ME PRAYACCHA, SARVA KARMA SUCHA ME,
CHITTAM SHRIYAM KURU HUM, HA HA HA HA HOH, BHAGAVAN, VAJRA HERUKA
MA ME MUNCHA, HERUKA BHAVA, MAHA SAMAYA SATTVA AH HUM PHAT.
(1x) (no bell)

TRANSFORMING DEATH INTO THE PATH OF DHARMAKAYA

The merit field enters through my forehead and blesses me. All dharmas have no inherent
existence. Even at the size of small atoms, they are only imputed by the mind.

OM SVABHAVA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SVABHAVA SHUDDHO HAM.

P
Light comes from the HUM ( ) at my heart and goes forth to the universe and sentient beings
P
which then all dissolve into me. I dissolve into the HUM ( ) at my heart. The shabgyu (Ë) of the
P m
HUM ( ) dissolves into the HA ( ), which dissolves into the head of the HA, which dissolves
into the crescent moon, which dissolves into the tigle, which dissolves into the nanda, which
dissolves into emptiness.

OM SHUNYATA JNANA VAJRA SVABHAVA ATMAKO HAM.

All phenomena, lacking inherent existence, transform into clear light like a stainless sky.

TRANSFORMING BARDO INTO THE PATH OF SAMBHOGAKAYA

From emptiness into which all appearances have been absorbed, my mind takes the form of a
nanda standing in space, very thin, white with a red complexion.

Instantly I become Heruka.

Page 7
The Abbreviated Sadhana Of Glorious Heruka Five Deities

(Hold bell and vajra)

OM SUMBHANI SUMBHA HUM HUM PHAT, east black mantra,
OM GRIHNA GRIHNA HUM HUM PHAT, north green mantra,
OM GRIHNAPAYA GRIHNAPAYA HUM HUM PHAT, west red mantra,
OM ANAYAHO BHAGAVAN VIDYARAJA HUM HUM PHAT, south yellow mantra. (finger
snapping mudra)

These mantras radiate light according to their four colours and the lights transform into the
immense square vajra fence—black in the east, green in the north, red in the west, and yellow in
the south —which extends from the Brahma realm above to the golden ground below. In the
P P
centre of this from HUM ( ) arises a double variegated vajra marked by the letter HUM ( ) at its
P
hub. Light radiating out from this HUM ( ) upwards and all around becomes the vajra ground,
self-composed of multi-coloured vajras. Light shines from those vajras and pervades upwards,
downwards and in all directions. It becomes a vajra arrow net, vajra tent, and vajra canopy—all
of one piece. Outside there is a mountain of fire like the end of an eon.

(Protection mantras)
OM MEDINA VAJRA BHAVA BANDHA HUM, OM VAJRA PRAKARA HUM BAM HUM,
OM VAJRA PANYATZARA HUM PAM HUM, OM VAJRA BITANA HUM KHAM HUM,
OM VAJRA SARADZALA TRAM SAM TRAM, OM VAJRA DZVALA ANALARKA HUM
HUM HUM.

(Hold bell and vajra)

OM SUMBHANI SUMBHA HUM HUM PHAT, OM GRIHNA GRIHNA HUM HUM PHAT,
OM GRIHNAPAYA GRIHNAPAYA HUM HUM PHAT, OM ANAYAHO BHAGAVAN
VIDYARAJA HUM HUM PHAT. (Finger snapping mudra)

May all sentient beings be free from obstacles and hindrances.

x= c= d= v=
In the centre of the protection wheel from YAM ( ), RAM ( ), BAM ( ), and LAM ( ) arise
air, fire, water and earth mandalas respectively placed one above the other, upon which from
n$= A=
SUM ( ) a square Mount Meru emerges. Upon that from PAM ( ) emerges a variegated lotus
P
marked at its centre by HUM ( ) which becomes a variegated double vajra. In the centre of the
A=
double vajra is a yellow PAM ( ) which transforms into an eight-petalled variegated small lotus.
In the centre of the lotus arise the thirty-two major marks in the form of A AA I II U UU RI RII
LI LII E EE O OO AM AH, sixteen white vowels standing clockwise, and A AA I II U UU RI
RII LI LII E EE O OO AM AH, sixteen white vowels standing counter-clockwise, all joined in
one circle.

Page 8
The Abbreviated Sadhana Of Glorious Heruka Five Deities

Outside of these circle the eighty minor marks arise in the form of KA KHA GA GHA NGA,
TSA TSHA DZA DZHA NYA, TA THA DA DA DHA DHA NA, TA THA DA DA DHA DHA
NA, PA PHA BA BHA MA, YA YA RA LA LA WA, SHA KHA SA HA KSHA, forty red
consonants standing together clockwise, and KA KHA GA GHA NGA, TSA TSHA DZA
DZHA NYA, TA THA DA DA DHA DHA NA, TA THA DA DA DHA DHA NA, PA PHA BA
BHA MA, YA YA RA LA LA WA, SHA KHA SA HA KSHA, forty red consonants standing
together counter-clockwise, all joined in one circle. These two circles transform into a white
moon disc with a red hue, the white reflection of the vowels and the white colour of the moon
representing mirror-like wisdom, and the red consonants and the red hue of the moon
representing the wisdom of equality.

TRANSFORMING BIRTH INTO THE PATH OF NIRMANAKAYA

Returning to the nanda standing in space, I see below me the white moon shaded red and think:
“I shall take birth amidst the white and red drops of father and mother and work for the welfare
of sentient beings.” With such an intention the nanda enters the moon. Gradually the letter HUM
P
( ) emerges, white with a red shade, which is in the nature of the causal vajra-holder and when
P
complete represents the wisdom of discrimination. From the HUM ( ) five-coloured light
radiates from which emerge the five deities to liberate sentient beings into the state of five-deity
Heruka, simultaneously inviting heroes and yoginis who have existed from beginningless time.
P
These heroes and dakinis embrace in union and dissolve into the nanda of the HUM ( ). The
P
letter HUM ( ) becomes the nature of simultaneous bliss, which represents all-accomplishing
wisdom.

OM AH HUM
OM SARVA VIRA YOGINI KAYA VAK CITTA VAJRA SVABHAVA ATMAKO HAM.
OM VAJRA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA VAJRA SHUDDO HAM.

P
The HUM ( ), together with the vowels, consonants and moon transform into the entire mandala
residence and resident deities which appear simultaneously, representing the wisdom of the
Dharmadhatu.

This square mansion complete with all its characteristics has four doors and archways and is
surrounded by the protection wheels, fire mountain and eight cemeteries.

Within the mansion, the ceiling and floor are white in the east, green in the north, red in the west,
yellow in the south and blue in the centre. At its centre is a variegated lotus and sun mandala.
Upon the centre of this lotus and sun cushion I stand as Bhagavan Shri Heruka, deep blue colour,
with four faces—central face black, left green, rear red, and right yellow—each with three eyes
and a rosary of five-pronged vajras on the forehead. I have twelve arms and my extended right
leg tramples the head of black Bhairava, who has four arms, the first two with palms joined, the
second right hand holding a damaru and the left a sword. My bent left leg tramples the breast of

Page 9
The Abbreviated Sadhana Of Glorious Heruka Five Deities

red Kalarati, who has four arms, the first two with palms joined, the second two holding a
skullcap and khatvanga. They each have one face and three eyes and are adorned by the five
ornaments.

With my first two hands I embrace Vajra Varahi, while holding in my right hand a five-pronged
vajra and in the left a bell. My second two hands hold an elephant skin, my right hand holding
the left foreleg and my left hand the left hind-leg, stretching the skin across my back and making
the threatening mudra at eye level. In my third right hand I hold a damaru, in the fourth an axe,
fifth a curved knife and sixth a three-pointed spear. In my third left hand I hold a khatvanga
marked by a vajra, in the fourth a blood-filled skullcup, fifth a vajra noose and sixth the four-
faced head of Brahma.

On each head I have a variegated double-vajra on my topknot and wear a crown of five human
skulls strung together top and bottom with rosaries of black vajras, each head slightly tilted to the
left. A small half moon shines above and to the left of my central face.

The faces change showing four large fangs. I express the nine moods, the three physical moods:
sensual, heroic and repulsive; the three verbal moods: laughing, fierce and fear-inspiring; and the
three mental moods: compassionate, wondrous and peaceful.

I wear a tiger skin loin cloth and a garland of fifty fresh human heads hanging down. Complete
with the six ornaments, my entire body is smeared with the ash of human bone.

Yab-Yum embracing—our body features, mudras, and ornaments—symbolizes the knowledge

and qualities of the indivisibility of method and wisdom.

In front of myself as the Bhagavan is the red Bhagavati Vajra Varahi who has one face, two
hands, naked body and her hair hanging loose. She wears a skirt of small pieces of skull. In her
left hand around Heruka’s neck, she holds a skullcup filled with the blood of the four maras,
offered to his mouth. Her right hand in the threatening mudra holds a curved knife pointed at all
the malevolent forces of the ten directions. Blazing like fire at the end of the eon of destruction,
she is bright like the sunlight, magnificent, expressing the meaning of emptiness to sentient
beings. Her legs firmly grasp Heruka’s thighs. Endowed with great compassion, in the nature of
great bliss, she is adorned with the five ornaments and wears five human skulls on her head and a
necklace of fifty human skulls. They both stand amidst a blazing wisdom fire. On lotus and
corpse seats are, on the east, black Vajra Dakini, on the north, green Lamma, on the west, red
Kandarohi, on the south yellow Rupini. All of them have their right leg extended. They have four
arms, the first two hands holding curved knife and skullcup in the mudra of embrace, the second
two hands holding damaru and khatvanga. In the four intermediate directions, each on a lotus
and moon disc, are four vases filled with the five nectars, the vases marked by skullcups.

P
At Heruka’s secret place from a white HUM ( ) a white 5-pronged vajra emerges and from a red
dX dX
BYA ( ) a red jewel at the tip marked by a yellow BYA ( ). At Vajrayogini’s secret place from
,Z ó
a red AH ( ) a red 3-petalled lotus emerges and from a white DYA ( ) at its centre arises a
ó
white pistil marked by a yellow DYA ( ) at the tip.

Page 10
The Abbreviated Sadhana Of Glorious Heruka Five Deities

At Heruka’s navel and heart and Vajrayogini’s throat and forehead are moon cushions with
Vajrayogini’s essence and near-essence mantras. At Vajrayogini’s navel and heart and Heruka’s
throat and forehead are sun cushions with Heruka’s essence and near-essence mantras. They are
red in colour and face each other standing counter-clockwise with light rays intertwined as if
embracing.

OM SHRI MAHA SUKHA VAJRA HE HE RU RU KAM AH HUM HUM PHAT SOHA

By entering into union I give rise to the four joys in serial order. The entire mandala residence
and the resident deities become the nature of indivisible voidness and bliss.

VISUALIZING THE ARMOUR

At my heart on a moon disc sits Vajrasattva with three faces and six-arms.
At my forehead is yellow Vairochana.
At my crown is red Padmanateshvara (Pema Garwang).
At my two shoulders is black Heruka.
At my two eyes is red Vajrasurya, Indestructible Sun.
At my brow is green Parameshvara.
Except for Vajrasattva, these deities sit on a sun disc.

At Vajrayogini’s navel is red Vajra Varahi.

At her heart is blue Yamani.
At her throat on a moon disc stands white Mohani.
At her forehead is yellow Kshobini.
At her crown a green Trasani.
At her brow a smoky-coloured wrathful Chandika.
Except for Mohani, all of them stand on a sun disc. They have right leg extended and wear bone
ornaments.

INVITING WISDOM AND INITIATION BEINGS

PHEM! (flame mudra)

P
Through the light radiating from the HUM ( ) on a sun disc at my heart, the mandala wisdom
beings together with initiation deities and offering goddesses are invited to the space in front of
me. The light dissolves back into my heart.

(do the mudras)

HUM.

The three places of the deities are marked by OM AH HUM.

OM YOGA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA YOGA SHUDDHO HAM

The samaya and wisdom beings are of one taste. Clear light and bliss are indivisible. They
appear as the mandala and resident mandala deities, with Yab-Yum as the principal.

INITIATION

OM ARGHAM PRATITZA SOHA (ARGHAM mudra only)

I request all you Tathagatas to bestow the actual empowerment upon me.
(Having thus requested.) “Just as all the Tathagata Buddhas received ablution as soon as they
were born, likewise do we now confer ablution.”

OM SARVA TATHAGATA ABHISHEKATA SAMAYA SHRIYE HUM

Thus saying, they initiate me with a stream of nectar via the crown of my head. Myself and the
deities become the essence of great bliss. The surplus water remains as an ornament on the
crown of the principal deity in the form of Vajrasattva; on Vajra Varahi as Akshobya; on Dakini
as Vairochana; on Lamma as Amogasiddhi; on Kandarohi as Amitabha; on Rupini as
Ratnasambhava. The initiation deities then dissolve into me.

INNER OFFERINGS

OM! I offer to the mouths of my kind root and lineage Gurus. OM AH HUM. (hold nectar in
right hand at the crown and sprinkle nectar with the left ring finger)
To the mouths of the Glorious Bhagavan Shri Heruka mandala deities. OM AH HUM. (hold at
heart and sprinkle)
I offer to the mouths of the other yidam and mandala deities. OM AH HUM. (hold at heart and
sprinkle)
I offer to the mouths of the Dharma protectors, directional protectors, field protectors, gods of
the earth and regions. OM AH HUM. (hold at navel and sprinkle)

OM AMRITA SVADHANA VAJRA SVABHAVA ATMAKO HAM.

OM VAJRA KAMINI SARVA BHAKSHAM SHODDHIYA GYU HE VAJRA NI SOHA.
OM SHRI MAHA SUKHA VAJRA HE HE RU RU KAM AH HUM HUM PHAT SOHA.

The Principal Deity and Consort enter into union experiencing great bliss and voidness.
Simultaneously the mandala deities are satisfied.

VISUALIZATION DURING THE MANTRA RECITATION

P
At my heart I visualize a sun disc, on top of which is a blue HUM ( ), surrounded by circles of
mantras. Light radiates to the universe purifying and liberating sentient beings into the state of
P
Heruka and Vajrayogini. Light dissolves back into the HUM ( ) and shines out again from the
P
HUM ( ) and mantras to the pure lands of the Buddhas. It transforms into innumerable offerings
P
to the Buddhas and returns to the HUM ( ) in the form of blessings of all the Buddhas,
Bodhisattvas and Heruka mandala deities. While reciting the mantras, imagine their sound
coming from the mouths of the deities.

CONCLUDING DISSOLUTION

P
Light shines from the HUM ( ) at my heart, resident and residing mandalas dissolve into light.
The protection wheel together with the cemetery dissolve into the mandala house. The four vases
and skullcups dissolve into the dakinis. The four dakinis dissolve into the four faces of myself.
The mandala house dissolves into myself and Vajrayogini. Myself and Vajrayogini dissolve into
P P
the HUM ( ). The shabgyu of the HUM ( ) dissolves into the HA, which dissolves into the head
of the HA, which dissolves into the crescent moon, which dissolves into the tigle, which
dissolves into the nanda. The nanda becomes thinner and thinner and dissolves into the clear
light of emptiness. (Illustration on page 5)

From the state of emptiness, instantly I arise as a blue one-faced Heruka, with two hands holding
bell and vajra, and embracing Vajrayogini.

OM SUMBHANI SUMBHA HUM HUM PHAT

OM GRIHNA GRIHNA HUM HUM PHAT
OM GRIHNAPAYA GRIHNAPAYA HUM HUM PHAT
OM ANAYAHO BHAGAVAN VIDYARAJA HUM HUM PHAT (finger snapping mudra)

DEDICATION

For the benefit of all sentient beings may I become Heruka.

May all sentient beings achieve the enlightened state of Heruka.
Due to the merit of this practice, may I and others be led by dakas and dakinis to Kachö at the
end of our lives.

Throughout many lifetimes may we be adopted by Bhagavan Heruka and Vajrayogini and
accomplish the two stages of their path.
