CHAPTER 1
Introduction
In recent years, the scope of public health practice has continued to expand
given the call to action to promote sustainable health and nutrition. Therefore, eating
practices and the nutritive value of consumed foods are becoming increasingly
important areas of research for nutritional counseling professionals across the
globe.pool Adequate and proper nutrition is an important aspect of a healthy
lifestyle. Therefore, it is essential to promote an awareness of the nutrients contained in
foods in relation to their roles in body maintenance, growth, reproduction, health, and
disease prevention in humans.
Nutritional awareness was defined as self perception of the importance
assigned to eating balanced meals, and classified as high, moderate, or of little
importance (Alkerwi, Sauvageot, Malan, Shivappa, & Hébert, 2015). It is the ability to
receive and differentiate sensory stimuli. Diet quality, improved income effected on
nutritional awareness (Alkerwi et al., 2015).Lots of people think the path to ideal health
and fitness goes through one specific type of diet that has worked for others. In order to
achieve their own fitness goals – whether they involve weight loss, muscle building, or
athletic performance – they may feel they need to follow a one-size-fits all program that
has already worked for people you know.
Good advice may be perceived completely differently. Knowledge of food
awareness could be a solution. It puts the consumer in control of a healthier
lifestyle(Foodvally NL,2022). Nutrition awareness is a method used to evaluate the
nutrition status of individuals(Belot & James, 2011) and comparing the nutrition habits
among different areas.
Nowadays, nutrition assessment is used to determine the poverty of different
areas and became international applied procedures (Bhattacharya, Currie, & Haider,
2004). The collected information through the nutrition assessment can be used to
draw health care plans for different areas to correct any imbalances or food bad
habits in different areas(Corder et al., 2011). Such work is very beneficial in poor
areas of the world. Nutrition awareness and assessment is a procedure applied
through measuring the food habits in a specific period of time(Crites & Aikman, 2005;
Florence, Asbridge, & Veugelers, 2008).. Good nutrition habits will help
standing food health (Garduno, 2015). So, nutrition awareness is essential to
improve individuals' health through improving their food habits. Increasing health care
through food will decrease the expenses on medical care and improve knowledge
among citizens to minimize their exposure for diseases.
Effectivefoodpolicy actions lead to positive changes in food, social, and
information environments and thesystems that underpin them (Hawkes et al.,
2015). People with high nutrition knowledge tend to have high attitude toward
food evaluation(Crites & Aikman, 2005). The effective management of food
intake and nutrition are both key to good health. Nutrition awareness can help prevent
disease. Eating the right foods can help your body cope more successfully with an
ongoing illness. Understanding good nutrition and paying attention to what you eat
can help you maintain or improve your health. Healthy diet is not always easy to
follow, it needs deep understanding and self-perseverance with consistency to
improve wellness. People should be aware that eating unhealthy foods will lead them
to downfall. Gibney et al. (2016),
The researchers pursue this study to give awareness to young adults with
different perspective about health characteristics that personalized nutrition should be
normalize to avoid unnecessary and unexpected diseases brought by unhealthy
lifestyle. To be knowledgeable about proper ways to improve one’s goal of being
physically, emotionally, socially health
Theoretical Framework
Philosophers and researchers have deemed nutrition as one of the fundamental
components of life. Therefore, there is no surprise at all that the universal medical
science concepts included nutrition as one of their integral components. The theory
nutrition Health promotion by Social Cognitive Means of Albert Bandura, PhD.
(2004)According to his theory, focuses on health promotion and disease prevention by
social cognitive means. Social cognitive theory specifies a core set of determinants, the
instrument through which they work, and the optimal ways of translating the knowledge
into efficient health practices. The core determinants include knowledge of health risks
and the advantage of different health practices, examined self- efficiency that one
individual can exercise restrain over own health practices, development anticipation
about the expected expenditure and benefits for distinctive health habits, the health
desires help the individual create a solid system and arrangements for learning them,
and the perceived facilitators and social and structural hindrance to the changes they
pursue. Knowledge of knowing what is health risks and the benefits creates the
requirements for change. If people lack knowledge about how their lifestyle practices
affects their health, they have a little reason to put themselves through distress of
changing the dangerous practice they enjoy. Self- influences are required for most of
the Individual to conquer hindrance to adopting new lifestyle practices and maintaining
them. The beliefs is one of the main reason that plays a central role in personal change.
They desired actions produces great effects and encouragement to act strong in terms
of difficulties. Some factors serve as guides and motivators, they are rooted in the core
beliefs that individual has the power to produce desired changes by one's actions.
Health behavior is also affected by the outcomes people expect their actions to
produce. The outcome of expectations take several forms. The physical outcome
include pleasurable and aversive effects of behavior and the attending material losses
benefits. Behavior is something constrain by the social reactions it educe. The social
approval and disapproval the behavior produces in interpersonal connection in the
second major class outcomes. People adopt personal unexceptional behavior by their
self and regulate and evaluate it through reactions. They tend to do things that gives
them enough satisfaction and self- worth to refrain from dissatisfaction. Motivation
creates self interest and goals to value. Personal goals, is a way of valuing self-
incentives towards health habits. Health Education & Behavior (April 2004) influences
at hand for distal goals to control current behavior. Short- term attainable goals help
people to succeed by enlisting effort and guiding action in here and now . personal
change would be easy if there were no impediments to surmount. self-efficacy beliefs
must be measured against gradations of challenges two successful performance. The
regulation of behavior is not solely a personal matter. Some of the impediments to
helpful living reside in health systems there rather than personal or situational
impediments. These impediments are rooted in how health services are structured
socially and economically.
In psychology, self-determination is an important concept that refers to each
person's ability to make choices and manage their own life. This ability plays an
important role in psychological health and well-being. Self-determination allows people
to feel that they have control over their choices and lives. It also has an impact on
motivation—people feel more motivated to take action when they feel that what they do
will have an effect on the outcome.
The concept of self-determination has been applied to a wide variety of areas including
education, work, parenting, exercise, and health. Research suggests that having high
self-determination can foster success in many different domains of life.
Conceptual Framework
The concept of the study is to give the awareness, reliable and time information
for effective and efficient using awareness towards nutrition . The input process includes
the awareness among young adults in Barangay Poblacion Salay Misamis Oriental to
makes healthy dietary suggestions more relevant to the daily life of the individual. The
output aimed to encourage people to be aware of nutritional food, as it is driven by the
focus on food quality instead of food quantity. Individuals who follow high-scored food
would most likely improve their dietary behaviour and weight improvement
Intervention
Pretest Post-test
Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this study is to give awareness among the young adult selected
residents of Barangay Poblacion Salay regarding to the topic of level of awareness
towards nutrition among young adults,it seeks to answer the following given questions:
1. What is the level of awareness on nutrition among young adults before the
intervention?
2. What is the level of awareness on nutrition among young adults after the
intervention?
3. Is there a significant difference in the young adults level of awareness on nutrition
(intervention) used?

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
Northern Mindanao (Region X) is one of 17 regions in the Philippines and is
located in the north-central part of Mindanao. The region is composed of the provinces
of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental , and Misamis Oriental.
The overweight and obesity among adults is a continuing nutrition concern in the region.
In 2015, 33 percent of adults had weights above the desirable level, with Misamis
Oriental having the highest prevalence with 38.2 percent, followed by Misamis
Occidental with 35.5 percent. In addressing the problems related to nutrition and
consistent with the functions and role of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) X as
the coordinating body on nutrition in the region, the Regional Plan of Action on Nutrition
(RPAN) 2019-2022 was formulated. It is consistent with the Philippine Plan of Action on
Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022, Philippine Health Agenda as well as the Administration’s
Economic Agenda and commitment to good governance to the Filipino people
especially in capacitating the poor, through healthcare, education, social protection and
other services. The PPAN is the country’s blueprint of actions for nutrition improvement.
The results of the National Nutrition Survey in 2015 showed that 36.5% or 236,505
children are stunted, 27.7% are underweight and about 25, 270 are wasted. Stunting is
the most dominant form of undernutrition and has permanent effects on a child’s growth
and development. Survey findings showed that the poverty incidence among families in
Northern Mindanao was 30.3%, subsistence incidence or the proportion of Filipinos
whose income falls below the food threshold was estimated at 13.8% (PSA, 2015) and
the families who experienced hunger was 18.2% (PSA, 2013). Meanwhile, overnutrition
was also a problem wherein the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children
and adults are also on the rise.
The Bangsamoro, a newly created autonomous region in the part of Mindanao
Island in the Philippines, strives to resolve the alarming problem on food insecurity and
malnutrition among its people especially in the rural areas. This is through and guided
by the first-ever set of plans and strategies crafted through strong partnership between
and among its ministries and the supporting development agencies. The region just
represents, on a smaller scale, the world that is also beset by the increasing trends of
food insecurity among millions of people these days. For decades, the number of
hungry people had been declining but this is not true anymore as stated in The State of
Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019. BARMM continues to be challenged by
persistent malnutrition. In the 2015 National Nutrition Survey (NNS), the Food and
Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) has indicated that BARMM has the highest
prevalence of stunting in the country at 44.9%, which increased from 42.6% in 2013.
Relatedly, the region continues to suffer from chronic malnutrition, with a prevalence
rate of 45.2% in 2015. We are indeed grateful to be a partner of MAFAR in addressing
these challenges to the Bangsamoro people. Achieving food security and nutrition for all
is at the heart of FAO’s efforts, especially as we work towards achieving Sustainable
Development Goal (SDG) 2 on attaining Zero Hunger.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This part of the research presents the various methodologies of data gathering
that are relevant to the study. It describes the sequence of data gathering by
considering research design first, followed by research locale, respondent of the study,
sampling techniques, research instrument, data gathering procedures and the different
tools.
Research Design
A descriptive method of research will be designed for the adaptation of the
study. The research method deals mainly on the level of awareness towards nutrition
among young adults in Barangay Poblacion Salay. The process of gathering of
information does not only involve identifying, selecting and analyzing data but also
giving the right knowledge on how to improve one’s health by personalized nutritional
food. A quasi experimental research were designed to analyze thoroughly.
Research Locale
This study was situated and conducted in Salay Community College currently
located in Purok 1, Poblacion, Salay, Misamis Oriental. Salay Community College is a
public school that offers three degree courses and has accommodated over 1,000
students this school year. In Poblacion Salay Gymn the researcher will conduct a
seminar to the respondents.
Respondents of the study
The respondent of our study are the young adults of Barangay Poblacion Salay.
We choose to conduct a seminar in Barangay’s Poblacion Salay which have lots of
young adults that has a nutritional food problem.
Sampling Techniques
The method that will be used in choosing the respondents is purposive sampling.
The researchers choose a purposive sampling, that is considering that the population of
respondents is in a group and consider a healthy and secure respondents participants
and they know their limitation which can caused their unhealthy lifestyle
Data Gathering Technique
Before the gathering of data the researchers select their respondents, a letter
of request will be made, asking permission from the school Administration in Salay
Community College, after that the researcher also ask a letter of request for the
permission on the said seminar to the office of the Mayor, and then the researcher will
conduct an interview to the respondents as way of assessing the pretest, then the
researcher will ask guidance from the MDRRMO for conducting the seminar, after that
the researchers is presently doing about the level of awareness towards nutrition among
young adults , and then the researcher will conduct interview to the respondents as way
of assessing the post test. Then researchers also explained to them that their
cooperation means a lot for the success of the study about the healthy lifestyle.
Research Instrument
The researchers will conduct seminar in Barangay Poblacion Salay to teach the
respondents about the Importance of adequate and proper nutrition. It consist of thirty
four (34) respondents.
Statistical treatment of data
The responses made by the respondents through seminar were analyzed by
researcher’s way of collecting data describing their socio-demographic profile,
preferences of choosing their foods, and anticipated problems due to nutritional problem
were presented. The respondent were statistically uses data instruments for the study.
Descriptive studies such as frequency count, mean, percentage are considered. For
instance, sex, age, income, respondent occupation, food choices. This was also applied
for top priorities of how they make their living healthy and fit. In providing the said data
the presentation will be presented as;
