Sop 1 Digital Earth Tester Clamp

This Standard Operating Procedure outlines the steps for measuring earth electrode resistance using a digital earth clamp tester, emphasizing safety precautions and risk assessments. It details the necessary preparations, including equipment inspection, isolation permits, and personal safety measures before conducting tests. The procedure includes specific instructions for connecting electrodes and calculating resistance values using the fall of potential method.

STANDARD OPERATING

PROCEDURE
EARTH ELECTRODE RESISTANCE
MEASUREMENT WITH GENERAL
MASS OF EARTH
MAINTENANCE

Standard Operating Procedure for use of Digital earth clamp on earth tester for
Earth resistance(ER) measurement of earth electrode and continuity of equipment
connection to earth grid.

PURPOSE/ OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this procedure is to list the safety precautions to be followed during
Earth resistance measurement with general mass of earth.

SCOPE

Covers procedure for use of Digital earth clamp on earth tester for Earth resistance
measurement of earth electrode and continuity of equipment connection to earth grid.

PROCEDURE:

Plan to measure ER value of Earth electrode.

 The team tasked for the testing will review the existing risk assessment policy for its applicability
and if required will carry out a separate JSA for the Testing job

Examination and inspection of equipment and working area.

 Prior to startup of any ER testing works carry out pre-job planning and risk assessment.
 Obtain Safe work and the Electrical Isolation permit required as per Organizational practices
prior to testing of earth electrodes.
 Ensure that LOTO system practices are followed
 Personal safety equipment is mandatory
 Ensure personnel performing the test are familiar with the manufacturer's O &M manual of the
Earth tester meter before beginning the procedure.
 Clear and close off working area.
 Test done to be done in outside hazardous zone.

Hazards
 Explosion and Fire hazard while conducting tests in explosive atmosphere.
Performance of the ER Test on earth electrode using digital
earth tester clamp type.
 Each equipment is connected at least to two separate earth pits or an earth grid with no. of earth
pits. Identify equipment and earth pits connected to earth electrode whose earth resistance to
general mass of earth is to be measured.

 Ensure healthiness of other earth electrode /earth grid continuity to equipment which is to be
remain connected before disconnecting the test earth electrode from other earth electrodes/grid.
Else isolate and lockout the equipment.

 Isolate the earth electrode from other equipment/earth grid. (In case of generator/ transformer
neutral or any power source neutral grounding, equipment is to be shut down before
disconnecting electrode.)

 Rope in two test electrode rod ‘B’, ‘C’ at distances 31 meter and 50 meter in ground from earth
electrode(‘A’) (Reference distance: IS 3043 Fall of potential 3 point method)

 Connect Electrode A and B and measure loop resistance between electrode A and B (R1).
Similarly Connect electrode A and C and measure loop resistance (R2) and without disturbing
position of B and C connect B and C and measure loop resistance (R3). As shown in figure I.

 Now resistance of earth electrode can be calculated as R= (R1+R2-R3)/2.

 Perform in another 90’ direction and note down average of the values in two direction.
