PART 3

In this part of the test, read the text and the questions below it. For each question,
choose the correct answer.

TEST 1
A hotel under the sea
Want to sleep under the sea? The company Planet Ocean has plans for an exciting
underwater hotel, which they hope to build in locations all over the world.

The hotel won't be large, with only 12 guest rooms, plus a restaurant. Guests will get to the
hotel in a lift - so no diving or getting wet! The hotel will float 10 metres under the ocean,
although it will be attached to the sea bed to prevent it from moving too far. Because it
won't be very deep under the water, the sun will shine down and provide light. Guests will
get great close-up views of the fish and other sea creatures, which won't be bothered by the
hotel and so won't make any effort to avoid it.

The hotel's design, with clear plastic walls, means guests will be able to see the sea and all
the creatures that live there around, above and below them in their rooms. They will almost
get the feeling that they are swimming in the ocean. The luxury rooms will have a shower,
TV and even the internet. The restaurant will serve high-quality meals. As you might
expect, Planet Ocean wants to encourage people to eat less fish, so guests won't find any
on the menu. What's more surprising is that the atmosphere will be silent, so guests will
have to imagine the sound of the ocean around them.

The hotel won't be cheap to build and it won't be cheap to stay in. But the designers are
especially proud of the fact that it will be environmentally friendly. It will use electricity,
of course, but it will produce its own, and won't disturb ocean life at all. In fact, the
designers hope some sea creatures will build their homes on parts of the building, which
will bring real benefits to the underwater world.

Planet Ocean's future designs include a moving hotel. It perhaps sounds like this will work
in the same way as a cruise ship, but this is not the case. In fact, rather than moving between
continents and countries, it will stay within a single country's waters, but only occasionally
change positions around its coast.

TEST 2
The price of a perfect holiday?
Cruises are becoming more and more popular, with around 20 million passengers per year
now enjoying holidays on board luxury ships. Many people see a cruise as the perfect way
to sit back and do nothing, and enjoy time off work. Everything you could possibly need is
within easy reach. On board, there are shops, theatres, cinemas, swimming pools and
leisure centres. There are more facilities, in fact, than most towns offer their residents, It's
therefore easy to see why they are so popular. But what is the effect on the environment of
this trend?

Although it usually takes less energy for a vehicle to move through water than over land,
cruise ships are often huge, with the biggest ones carrying up to 6,000 passengers. Moving
such large vehicles requires enormous engines, which burn as much as 300,000 litres of
fuel a day. One scientist has calculated that cruise ships create as much pollution as 5
million cars going over the same distance. Because they are out at sea, they also burn dirtier
fuel that isn't allowed on land. Unfortunately, no government has control over the amount
of air pollution out at sea.

Cruises also produce huge amounts of rubbish, and cruise ships aren't usually good at
recycling. Waste water from showers and toilets is usually poured directly into the sea as
much per day as from a small town. Waste food from restaurants isn't put into the sea, but
still causes problems when brought back to the land.

Cruise ships also cause difficulties in the cities where they stop. Popular destinations can
get five or six ships per day, with thousands of tourists at a time. Good for restaurants? No.
Restaurant owners complain that the visitors look around for a few hours and then return
to their ship to eat. What's more, the crowds can put off other tourists, who complain that
the streets are too busy. Some towns have banned cruise ships or put a limit on the number
that can stop at the same time. People who care about the environment worry that as the
cruise industry continues to grow, so too will the issues for our planet.

problems.

TEST 3
Athletics in Jamaica
Jamaica has produced some of the world's best athletes, including stars such as Usain Bolt
and Veronica Campbell-Brown. Is this success partly due to one event - the Jamaica
Schools' Championships?

The four-day Championships have taken place every year since 1910. Nearly 200 school
students take part in front of an audience of over 30,000 people. The event is also shown
on live TV, and the whole country watches what is sometimes called Jamaica's mini-
Olympics. The competitors take it very seriously, and they all want to win. Classmates and
former students also come to support and encourage their schools.

School coach Dwayne Simpson has trained many young stars. He believes the
Championships have an important role in the development of young athletes. They are the
biggest schools' competition in the world, he says, and other countries are now looking to
copy them. He also believes that the Championships give young athletes a reason to
practise. They want to do well for their school, so they work and train together as a team,
so they produce better results.

The Championships have turned many young students into stars, but those who are most
talented as adults don't always win as young teenagers. Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt,
for example, failed to win a single race at the Championships as an under-15 runner.
Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown was always easily beaten in the lower-age
groups before finally winning as an older student.

Nathaniel Day, a young runner from Britain, has studied and trained in Jamaica for the last
two years. 'Young athletes here get experience of being on TV from the age of 12,' he says,
'so when they're older, they aren't scared of big occasions and they perform well. In the
UK, athletes don't perform in front of the cameras until they're adults, and sometimes they
find it hard to deal with.' According to Nathaniel, the Championships also give young
athletes a goal. 'Because it's such a big event, it gives them an idea of how exciting it is to
perform in an Olympic stadium. It helps them develop the ambition to become champions.'

TEST 4
The end of tv?
Tom Collins offers his opinion

I keep reading articles that argue the TV is dead. According to this view, people are
spending far more time using the Internet for their entertainment and for information. As a
result, they argue the TV is becoming less and less important in our lives. The time we
spend watching videos online is certainly increasing but I don't think this is a reason to
believe we should be saying goodbye to the television.

The TV is still a very popular way a lot of us get our entertainment at home. It offers us the
chance to see top musical artists, great films and documentaries and sometimes, thanks to
important live events, it has the power to bring the whole country and all ages together in
a way the Internet never could. How often do thousands or even millions of friends or
families sit down at the same time to watch something together online?

Some people argue that the TV offers a poor quality of programmes on the many channels
we now have. It is certainly true that many of the channels do nothing more than repeat old
shows or offer cheap, low quality programmes. However, I would argue that a lot of content
on the Internet isn't particularly great. At least TV shows have professional people checking
the quality of shows, which a lot of content on the web doesn't.

I agree that it is easy to keep up-to-date with the latest news on the Internet, even though
much of it is not true or certainly can't be trusted. I enjoy sitting down to the news on TV
in the evening, knowing that I am more likely to believe the information than the things I
read online. Anybody can post information on the Internet and a lot of it is opinion rather
than fact.

So I don't think we should be so quick to say goodbye to the TV. In fact, I think it has many
more years left in it! I certainly won't be swapping my TV for the latest laptop and will
continue to enjoy relaxing in front of it in the evenings.

TEST 5
Kirsty wade, young athlete
I’ve always been keen on sport and very fit so a few years ago I decided to join my local
athletics club. In the beginning I put all my effort into the long jump because it was my
best event, but the coach encouraged me to try different things.

I ended up as a middle-distance runner, which means I don’t run the short distances like
100 metres, or long cross-country races, but the in-between ones like 800 metres. It’s an
interesting type of running because you have to mix speed with strength. You also have to
think a lot about how you race, and choose the right moment to run at your maximum
speed. You need to do quite a lot of regular training when you first start and it helps if you
have a good coach who can keep you motivated and teach you the basics.

I take part in some quite major competitions now, but I still remember my first race. I was
so nervous before it started. And when it finished, I could still feel my hands shaking. It
was a great race and I came second so I was very pleased. Since then, I’ve learned to stay
calm before and during races. I do a lot of breathing exercises that help me stay focused
and relaxed. Competing has really helped me to trust in my own abilities. And now I find
that I love running in front of a crowd – I suppose it’s a sort of performance.

One thing I don’t enjoy so much is how hard you have to work to stay fit and strong enough
to race, although it helps that I often train with others. I try to eat and sleep well, but I don’t
have a special diet. Mostly it’s a case of getting plenty of variety and eating more of
everything because I’m so active.

I sometimes watch Olympic athletes on TV and imagine myself in their position. It must
be a fantastic experience, but at the moment I don’t feel that is necessarily where I’m
aiming. I think you have to give up so much if you want to reach that level.

TEST 6
One to watch!
Essay by Jessica Bourne, aged 14

I'm a big fan of films featuring the spy James Bond. I've got most of them on DVD. We've
recently bought Quantum of Solace, in which Daniel Craig plays the part of Bond. I don't
know why the film's got that name - but it's a great movie, anyway.

All the actors who've played James Bond have been great, but Daniel Craig, who's made
lots of other films, plays the part better than any of them. Even though he doesn't talk very
much, I think he's the most perfect actor for the role. He even does a few of the more
dangerous things in the film himself, instead of getting someone else to do them. I did
wonder sometimes whether he'd be clever enough to defeat the bad people - but I'm not
going to tell you the ending! The actress who stars with Craig gives a fantastic performance
too - I loved all the glamorous clothes she wore!

The director probably had a hard job making this Bond film as full of action as earlier ones.
But the excitement starts right at the beginning here, with a car chase along a mountain
road, and plenty of other thrilling scenes, too - Bond leaping off tall buildings and so on.
Unfortunately, I found the story difficult to follow in places, and it also seemed to be over
very quickly - it lasted under two hours. I also felt there weren't as many jokes as in the old
Bond films. And where was all the ridiculous Bond equipment - the underwater car or
exploding watch that everyone laughed at? This is a more serious, darker Bond film, but I
still really enjoyed it.

Questions

1 What is Jessica trying to do in her essay?

A explain what first attracted her to Bond films

B tell readers about the Bond DVDs she owns
C give a balanced view of a Bond film she has seen
D describe how Daniel Craig got the part of James Bond
23
B1 - READING

2 What can a reader find out from Jessica's essay?

A whether Quantum of Solace is her favourite Bond film

B what other films Daniel Craig has made
C which other actors have played James Bond
D whether she thinks Daniel Craig is the best James Bond

3 What does Jessica tell us about Craig in the new Bond film?

A He performs some of the action scenes.

B He wears some stylish clothes.
C He is given a lot of lines to say.
D He looks strong and fit enough to fight the criminals.

4 What is one problem with the film, according to Jessica?

A It seems a bit too long.

B It's sometimes hard to understand what's happening.
C It has too much silly technology in it.
D It has jokes that aren't very funny.

5 Which of these might appear in a magazine review of the new Bond film?

Cycling in the countryside
By Chris Jones, aged 14

Have you ever been cycling? This spring my older brother and I left the busy city and spent
a long weekend cycling in the countryside. Our average speed was only around 14 kph, but
that didn't matter. We hadn't come to break any speed records, or to get fit and healthy. All
we wanted was some fresh air and a break from schoolwork. My bike only once went more
than 30 kph, and that was when I raced my brother down the only hill on our route.

We really enjoyed cycling along flat, traffic-free country paths. There was plenty of spring
sunshine, but it was quite cold, especially in the mornings. We didn't mind, though - and
we soon warmed up as we rode along. Our only problem was when my brakes started
making a terrible noise. But I didn't mind as it gave us an excuse to visit a café while a
helpful bike mechanic had a look at it.

That was one of the best things about our route: every few kilometres there was a village
where we could find everything we needed. All the local people were really friendly, too.
However, most places we stopped at served chips with all the meals, which soon got fairly
boring.

One night we were woken at 4 a.m. by a group of rugby fans singing loudly in the hotel
corridor. We were tired and bad-tempered when we set off the next morning and very nearly
got lost, but soon felt more cheerful when the sun came out. That's what I like about cycling
- it's simple and it's fun. If you're looking for a short break that's active and cheap, then
cycling is a great choice!

Questions

1 What is Chris Jones doing in this text?

A describing the different places he saw while cycling

B comparing cycling to other forms of exercise
C suggesting places to stay on a cycling holiday
D recommending cycling as a good type of holiday
25

2 What do we find out about Chris's bike?

A It wasn't as good as his brother's.

B It was too old to go fast.
C It needed attention at one point.
D It had trouble going up hills.
3 Chris was pleased because

A he and his brother had chosen a good route.

B he felt much healthier than before he began his trip.
C he met other people who were keen on cycling.
D he went away at the best time of year for cycling
4 What did Chris dislike about his trip?

A breaking down
B the food
C the weather
D getting lost
5 What might Chris say in a postcard to a friend?

TEST 8
BAKING
By Sam Jarvis, aged 12

My grandmother loves making bread and cakes, and is always surprised that the rest of my
family never do any baking. So, my parents decided they'd take me and my younger sister
on a course, so that we could all find out how to make bread - and pizza, our favourite
food! We booked our places, and set off for Oakton Farm in the countryside.

It was a very long drive, and when we arrived, we went straight to bed. The next morning,
we got up early, fed the ducks on the lake, and looked at the bull in the next field. Then we
met our teacher, Michael, who seemed quite strict, and the other parents and children, who
were really friendly.

The cooking part was brilliant. Michael gave us long white coats to wear, which we all felt
a bit silly in. Then we all made bread rolls, mixing flour and water with our hands. My
sister kept complaining at first. Then even she started to enjoy it, and to concentrate on
following the instructions. Dad made lots of mess, I got flour on the floor and in my hair,
and Mum didn't even get angry! I took ages to make my rolls, though.

We finally put our initials on the bottom of each roll, then made some pizzas and decorated
them, which was fun. And we didn't even have to do the washing-up! For something to do
while the pizzas were cooking, we all went for a swim in the lake. It was fantastic. Then
we went back inside and ate our pizzas. They were the best we'd ever tasted!

TEST 9
SKATEBOARDING
by Rachel Martin, aged 11

I've practised skateboarding for 18 months now, and I was the youngest person in a street
skateboarding competition last year. I spend my free time at my town's new skatepark - I rarely
stay at home and watch TV.

Before the new skatepark was built this year, the nearest skatepark was in a town 10 km away.
Some of my older friends went there, but my mum wouldn't let me go because I wasn't old enough.
The only place to skate was on the pavements, but then I fell and injured my arm.

I wasn't popular with pedestrians either, so I stopped! Nowadays, though, I can use the new
skatepark in the evenings - it's got huge lights, so you can use it even at night.

We've got a skatepark at our school now, too. It keeps us fit! The school skatepark is dangerous
for smaller children like my little brother, though, as the teenage students also use their rollerskates
or ride their BMX bikes there. I guess they prefer it because the skatepark in town is pretty busy.

I've always found schoolwork easy, but skateboarding is hard! My favourite trick is jumping over
boxes. Doing things like that really makes you concentrate, which is a challenge, but it's something
I really enjoy. My older sister works as a skateboard instructor, so one day l'd like to be like her.
It's unusual for girls to skate around here, so although I love it, it's a bit lonely.

I’d like more girls to join in!

Questions

1 In this text Rachel Martin

A. explains what equipment is needed for skateboarding.

B. describes the places for skateboarding in her area.
C. persuades young people to enter skateboarding competitions.
D. compares skateboarding with other sports.
29
B1 - READING

2 Why was it hard for Rachel to go skateboarding last year?

A. There wasn't a skatepark near enough to her house.

B. None of her friends were able to go with her.
C. She was worried she would hurt herself.
D. She wasn't allowed to go out in the evenings.
3 What does Rachel say about the skatepark at her school?

A. It allows younger children to practise their skating.

B. It takes too many people away from other sports.
C. It is used for several different activities.
D. It is more crowded than the skatepark in town.
4 What does Rachel like about skateboarding?

A. getting the chance to be good at something

B. having to think carefully
C. learning new skills from her sister
D. doing an activity with girls of her own age
5 Which of the following might Rachel write in her diary?

TEST 10
A month ago, I had no idea that on a Saturday afternoon in November I’d be hanging 30
metres above the ground and enjoying it. Now I looked down at the river far below me,
and realised why people love rock-climbing.

My friend Matt and I had arrived at the Activity Centre on Friday evening. The
accommodation wasn’t wonderful, but we had everything we needed (beds, blankets,
food), and we were pleased to be out of the city and in the fresh air.

On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come
along with two friends, Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with
Amanda. We had come from various places and none of us knew the area.

We knew we were going to spend the weekend outdoors, but none of us was sure exactly
how. Half of us spent the morning caving while the others went rock- climbing and then
we changed at lunchtime. Matt and I went to the caves first. Climbing out was harder than
going in, but after a good deal of pushing, we were out at last - covered in mud but pleased
and excited by what we’d done.

Questions

1 What is the writer trying to do in the text?

A. advertise the Activity Centre
