💖 Valentine’s Day: Love, History & Creativity!

Level: 2nd ESO

Skills: Listening, speaking, reading, and writing
Timing: 50-60 minutes

📝 Lesson Objectives:

 Learn about the origins of Valentine’s Day.

 Improve vocabulary related to love, friendship, and emotions.

 Engage in creative writing and speaking activities.

1 Warm-Up (10 min) – "What Does Love Mean?"

Activity:

 Write the word "LOVE" on the board.

 Ask students to brainstorm different types of love (romantic, friendship, family, pets,
hobbies, etc.).

 Show a few Valentine’s Day symbols (💘 💌 💕) and ask what they represent.

💡 Variation: Use an engaging video like The History of Valentine’s Day (you may need to
summarize or simplify it for them).

2 Presentation (10-15 min) – The Origins of Valentine’s Day

Activity:

 Show a short PowerPoint or explain the history of Valentine's Day:

1. Saint Valentine and the Roman origins.

2. How it became a day of love and friendship.

3. Modern traditions around the world.

💡 Alternative: Instead of a presentation, give students a short reading passage and ask them
to answer 5 true/false questions.

3 Game Time! (10 min) – Valentine’s Day Vocabulary Challenge

Activity:

 Prepare a set of Valentine’s Day-related words (e.g., love, heart, crush, admire,
friendship, affection, roses, letter).

 Divide the class into two teams and play a guessing game:

o One student picks a word and describes it without saying the word itself.

o Their team must guess as quickly as possible!

💡 Variation: Play "Taboo" style—where they can’t use certain related words when describing.
4 Creative Task (15 min) – Love & Friendship Letters

Activity:

 Students write a short Valentine’s message to a friend, family member, or even a

fictional character!

 It can be a poem, letter, or even a love/friendship acrostic (e.g., L-O-V-E).

 Encourage fun and creativity—they can make it humorous or sweet!

 Optional: Decorate the messages and put them up on a class bulletin board or create a
digital Padlet wall.

💡 Alternative: Instead of a letter, students could create and perform a short dialogue about
Valentine’s Day.

5 Closing Activity (5 min) – Love Song Listening Challenge 🎶

Activity:

 Play part of a popular love song (e.g., Perfect by Ed Sheeran, Count on Me by Bruno
Mars).

 Ask students to fill in the blanks with missing words.

 Discuss the meaning of the song together.

💡 Alternative: If time is short, students can share their favorite romantic or friendship songs
instead.

🎯 Final Reflection:

 What new words did you learn today?

 What is your opinion about Valentine’s Day?

 Would you celebrate it differently in your culture?

This plan ensures engagement, learning, and fun! Would you like me to create any worksheets
or slides for this? 😊

Valentine's Day Taboo Game

How to Play:

1. Divide the class into two teams.

2. One player picks a card and must describe the word without using the taboo words
listed.
3. Their team has one minute to guess the word.

4. If they guess correctly, they get 1 point. If they say a taboo word, they lose 1 point.
