SINGLE PURCHASE CRAB

AIM:
To study a Single Purchase Crab

OBJECT:
1) To determine the velocity ratio (V.R) mechanical advantage (M.A), effort lost in friction load lost in
friction and efficiency of a Single Purchase Crab.
2) To draw the graph of
i) Load vs Effort
ii) Load vs. Efficiency.

THEORY:
Velocity Ratio (V.R) = (D1 + d)/(D2 + d) x (T2/T1) , where
D1 = Diameter of the effort pulley
D2 = Diameter of the load drum
d = Diameter of the rope
T1 = No of teeth in pinion
T2 = No of teeth in spur gear
Mechanical Advantage (M.A,) =(W/P) , where P is effort required to raise the load W.
Effort lost in friction = (P – (W/ V.R))
Frictional load ( Load lost in friction) = (P x V.R -W)
Efficiency of the machine = (W/P x V.R) x 100 %

APPARTUS:
Single Purchase Crab, Steel rule, Outside Calliper, Hanger and Rope

EXPERIMENTAL SET UP:

The labelled sketch of the experimental set up has been shown in separate sheet.
PROCEDURE:
1. Diameter of the effort pulley, load drum and the rope have been measured with the help of
outside calliper and steel rule.
2. Number of teeth of the spur gear (T2) and the pinion (T1) have been counted.
3. A known load W have been placed on the hanger of the load drum and the efforts have been
gradually added to the hanger provided on the effort wheel till the load W just started moving.
The load and the corresponding effort have been recorded in the observation table.
4. A total of six observation with different know loads and their corresponding effort were
recorded in the observation table.

SAMPLE CALCULATION:
Observation No. ______________ has been calculated.
i) Mechanical Advantage (M.A,) =(W/P) =
ii) Effort lost in friction = (P – (W/V. R)) =
iii) Frictional load = (P x V.R -W) =
iv) Efficiency = (W/P x V.R) x 100 % =
GRAPHS:
Graphs of: -
i) Load vs Effort
ii) Load vs. Efficiency.
Has been plotted and enclosed.
PRECAUTION: -
1. Before starting the experiment free movement and the proper setting of the machine has been
checked.
2. The rope has been wound up on the effort pulley and load drum in the same direction for rising
load. Over lapping of the rope has been avoided.
3. To avoid the error in measuring the diameter of the effort pulley, the load drum and the rope,
measurement has been taken three times each case and the mean of the three reading have
been recorded.
4. Efforts have been applied gently in order to avoid impact.
5. Proper care has been taken in counting the number of teeth on Spur wheel and Pinion.
