On the dashboard there is written CAN BUS ERROR

It can mean that:

1. A control unit has not go the power supply
2. A control unit has got some CAN wires broken
3. A control unit has been damaged.

Case 3A: MMC, or its CAN bus or the display are not working. ................................. 17
Case 3B: ECU of the engine or its wires not working. ............................................... 17

The machine has three control units:

• The dashboard on the steering column
• the gray electronic box on the oil tank
• the metal box electronic of the Yanmar engine close to the working pump

Case 1: a control unit has not the power supply.

If you see the indication on the dashboard, it means that certainly the display is powered.
Check if the LED of gray electronic box is on. If it is on, so the electronic motor control unit
(ECU) is not powered (see the case 1a).
If the gray box is not powered, cause the leds are off, it means that it has not the power
supply (see the case 1b).

Case 1a: ECU without power supply

Check these fuses with a multimeter:
Fuse n 17
Check that the emergency button is not pressed.
Check that the person is properly seated on the seat.

Also check that all contacts are perfect by following these cables:

Check the relay E1: this is supplying energy AC fuse and to MMC fuses.
Check if it it well inserted.
Try to swap the relay with one in position E6 (road lights).

Case 2: a control unit can not communicate because the CAN has broken the wires
or in short circuit.
The CAN wires are two: CAN H and CAN L (also known as CAN + and CAN-)
If one of these is not making contact, the communication between the control units can not
take place and the dashboard signals the error.

Check that the pins on the connector of the gray electronic box are inserted securely. To
do this, unscrew the Allen screw and then pull and push the wires in position 3 and 4.
Reconnect the 38 (or 50) pin connector on the electronic box.

If this does not solve the problem, ensure that all contacts in the scheme are perfect and
that no wire is interrupted.

If you followed these instructions you find yourself in the situation sketched above.

If the multimeter measures:

 60 ohm: the resistance of the line is ok, but the problem is between the J16
connector and the gray unit close to the oil tank (see case 2A).
 120 ohm: the CAN line is broken before arriving in the vicinity of the display or
before the central connection (case 2B).
 0 Ohm: The cable CAN+ and CAN- are shorted to each other (case 2C)
 “1 “ ohm (infinite): the wires CAN+ and CAN- are interrupted before going to the
central connector (case 2C) or the ECU is not connected or the driving column is
disconnected.

Electronic box mounted on the oil tank.

Case 2B: fault in dashboard CAN bus

From the central node, disconnect the J17 connector to the driving column.
Check:
between J17 pin A and J17 pin B, are there 120 Ohm?

If you are, check the central connection and the J1939 connector is well connected and
that the cables that go to the ECU are not broken.

If not, the yellow cable (or black cable) is damaged before reaching the resistance in the
guide column. In this case, remove the video of the driving column and check that the
resistance is connected to the system. Replace the resistance and if it is not enough,
replace the wires.

Case 2C: checking the CAN bus resistances

Take off the connector J16 coming from the gray control unit MMC on the oil tank.
If the resistance between the pin 2 and the pin 3 in the connector CANCECK becomes 60
Ohms, now you know that the wires between the J16 and the MMC are in short circuit.
Check better.
Else go on.

Take off the connector J17 going to the driving column.

If the resistance between the pin 2 and the pin 3 in the connector CANCECK becomes 120
Ohms, now you know that the wires between the J17 and the dashboard are in short
circuit. Check better.
Else it means that the wires on the engine harness (between connector j1939 and the
ECU) are in short circuit.

Case 3: a control unit can not communicate for a internal fault
After checking all the above process, observe the dashboard of the machine:

If the dashboard has these 4 icons ON:

Hot oil
No oil in the tank
No fuel
Harvest ON
Follow the case 3A

If the dashboard has not gor any icons on, go on reading.

If the dashboard has got these icons on:

Follow case 3B.

Case 3A: MMC, or its CAN bus or the display are not working.
It means that the gray control unit on the MMC oil tank is not able to work.
Recheck its connections as explained before.
Try to replace it with one of a machine that you know it is working.
If the problem persists, try replacing the display with a working one.
Case 3B: ECU of the engine or its wires not working.
It means that the ECU of the engine, which is located close to the fuse box, is not able to
work.
Recheck the ECU connections as explained before.
After, try to replace it with one of a machine that you know to be functional.

If you do not find the solution, repeat the procedure or call a technician.
