II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Confusion with oral language is one of the problems not only of few but most of
the people around the world including us. Oral language refers to the system in
which we use spoken language to express our feelings and ideas. This does not
mean that it is only the language we hear, for it also includes different
components that become the source of confusion.
Vocabulary List
1. Oral language – (n) a system through which we use spoken words to
express knowledge, ideas and feelings
2. Daily oral language - (n) a method devised to allow students the
opportunity to practice their punctuation, capitalization, word usage,
spelling and writing skills while developing their proofreading skills at the
same time
3. Stance-(n) a way of standing or being placed, posture; Intellectual or
emotional attitude
4. Behavior– (n) the way a person or animal acts or behaves
Oral Language Components
1. Vocabulary- understanding of different words
- to communicate properly, we need to know the meaning of
words so that we can communicate the idea we mean.
2. Phonology - the correct sounds and syllables in speaking the words
3. Syntax - functional understanding of grammar rules and the order of words
4. Morphology - understanding the word parts and forms
5. Pragmatics– understanding the social rules of communication; knowing when
to speak or not
To successfully deliver or communicate with others, you need to learn
different words that you will use and stand for your idea (Vocabulary). Then, you
need to pronounce or create those words properly so that you will be understood.
(phonology). But there is a need for you to understand the parts of your chosen
words (morphology) and at the same time the grammar followed by your words
(syntax). Finally, you need to learn when to speak and when to stop (pragmatics)
so that you will be successful in communicating with others.
Proper attitude in expressing our ideas also matters, for it can create other
meaning to our actions.
