Learning Activity Sheet – Week 1

Topic/Lesson: Quadratic Equations

Learning Competency:
• Illustrates quadratic equations (M9A-Ia-1)
• Solves quadratic equations by (a) extracting square roots; (b) factoring; (c) completing the square; and
(d) using the quadratic formula. (M9AL-Ia-b-1)

Discussion/Concept:
A quadratic equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that can be written
in the following standard form a𝑥2 + bx + c = 0, where a, b and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.
In the equation, a𝑥2 is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term and c is the constant term.

Solving Quadratic Equations

(A) Extracting Square Roots
It was mentioned that a quadratic equation of the form ax² + bx + c = 0 may have b = 0, such
that, ax² + c = 0. In other words, since c could be any constant, then, ax² = c. And, if a= 1, the quadratic
equation is further reduced to x² = c such that this form can be solved by extracting square roots. There
are different properties under the extracting of square roots:
1.If c>0, then x² = c has two real roots or solutions; c = ± √𝑐
2.If c = 0, then x² = c has one real root or solution; c = 0
3.If c < 0, then x² = c has no real roots or solutions
(B) Factoring
Only quadratic equation that is factorable can be solved by factoring. To solve such quadratic
equation, the following procedures can be followed.
1. Transform the quadratic expression into standard form if necessary.
2. Factor the quadratic expression.
3. Apply zero product property by setting each factor of the quadratic expression equal to 0.
4. Solve the resulting equation.
5. Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the original equation.
(C) Completing the Square
1. Write the terms with variables on one side of the equation.
2. Arrange the terms in descending order.
3. If the coefficient of x2 is not 1, divide on both sides the coefficient of x2.
4. Take half of the coefficient of x and add its square on both sides to complete the square.
5. Factor the perfect square trinomial on one side. Express it as square of binomial. Simplify the
expression on the other side.
6. Use the Square root property to solve for the values of the variable.
(D) Using the Quadratic Formula
1. Write the equation in standard form, a𝑥2 + bx + c = 0.
2. identify the value of a, b, and c.

3. Evaluate x =

Activity 1: Quadratic or Not Quadratic?

Direction: Given the following equations, fill in the table below by putting check () on its corresponding
column.

Not Not
Equations Quadratic Equations Quadratic
Quadratic Quadratic
1. 𝑥² + 7x + 12 = 0 6 (x – 3) + (x – 3) =0
2. -3x (x + 5) = 0 7. 25− 𝑟²=4𝑟
3. 12 – 4x = 0 8. ( 𝑥+2 )² = 0
4. (x + 7) (x – 7) = 3x 9. 12 ( ℎ − 6 )= 0
5. 2x + (x + 4) = 0 10. 3m + 8 = 15
