Chapter – 3 (Fraction)
• TF – 1
𝑎
The number of the form 𝑏, where a and b are natural numbers, are called fractions.
𝑎
Here, a is called the numerator and b the denominator of the fraction 𝑏
Example:
6
i. 7 is a fraction with numerator = 6
and denominator = 7.
11
ii.17 is a fraction with numerator = 11
and denominator = 17
• TF 2.
Types of Fractions
i. Like Fractions: Fractions with same denominators are called like fractions.
3 1 5
Example: 7 , 7 , 7 are all like fractions.
ii. Unlike Fractions: Fractions with different denominators are called unlike fractions.
5 2 3 7
Example: 1 , 9 , 7 , 4 are all unlike fractions.
iii. Proper Fractions: A fraction whose numerator is less than its denominator is called a proper
fraction.
2 3 5 7
Example: 11 , 20 , 21 , 8are all proper fraction.
iv. Improper Fractions: A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator
is called improper fractions.
3 11 13 1
Example: 2 , , 10 , 1 are all improper fractions.
8
v. Mixed Fractions: A combination of a whole number and a proper fraction is called a mixed
fraction.
3 1 3 3
Example: 27 , 1 5 , 3 10 , 5 8 are all fixed fraction.

• TF 3.
To convert a Mixed Fraction Into an Improper Fraction
• TF 4.
To convert an Improper Fraction into a Mixed Fraction
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient obtained is the whole number part and
the remainder is the numerator of the fractional part of mixed number.
• TF 5.
Addition of Like Fractions
𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑠
Sum of like fractions =
𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑜𝑛 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟
4 2 4+2 6
Example: 7 + = =7
7 7
• TF 6.
Addition of Unlike Fractions
Step I. Find the L.C.M. of denominators of unlike fractions.
Step II. Convert unlike fractions into equivalent like fractions with their L.C.M as common
denominator.
Step III. Add the like fractions so obtained.
4 3
Example: Find the sum of 7 + 5
Solution. L.C.M. of 7 and 5 = 7 × 5 = 35

• TF 7.
Subtraction of like fractions
𝐷𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑠
= 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑜𝑛 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟
5 7
Example = Subtract from 11 from 11
7 5 7−5 2
Solution: − = =
11 11 11 11
• TF 8.
Subtraction of Unlike Fractions
Step I: Find the L.C.M of denominators of unlike fractions.
Step II. Convert unlike fractions into equivalent like fractions with their L.C.M as common
denominator.
5 4
Step III. Find the difference 3 and 6
Solution. L.C.M. of 3 and 6 = 6
• TF 9.
Multiplication of Fractions
𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑠
Product of fractions = 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑠

• TF 10.
Reciprocal of a Fraction
Two fractions are said to be the reciprocal of each other, if their product is 1.
𝑎 𝑏
If general, if 𝑏 is a fraction, then its reciprocal is 𝑎
5 9
Example The reciprocal of 9 is 5
• TF 11.
Division of Fractions
To divide a fraction by another fraction, the first fraction is multiplied by the reciprocal of the
second.
