3 a Illustrate the interaction of photons with matter in the case of laser and obtain the 8 2 2
expression for energy density of radiation in terms of Einstein coefficients.
b What are the mechanisms involved in the attenuation of an optical fiber? An optical 6 2 3
signal with a power of 2mW coupled to the fiber having an attenuation of 0.25dB/km.
Find the optical power of the signal after travelling 25km through the fiber.
c A pulsed laser of pulse width 10µs of a beam of power 5.5mW. Find the number of 6 2 3
photons emitted for pulse if the wavelength of the laser beam is 650nm. If the input
power given to the laser by the source is 55mW, compute the percentage of input
power converted into the output power.

4 a An optical signal coupled to a step-index fibre. Obtain an expression for the maximum 8 2 2
angle made by an optical ray with the core axis such that the fibre can guide it. Also,
obtain the expression for optical power gathering ability. Given that the refractive
indices of the core and cladding are n1, and n2 respectively and assume the outer
medium is air.
b In a system transition of atoms between two energy levels emits radiation of 6 2 3
wavelength 675nm. The ratio of population between these levels is 2.75x10-31. Find the
temperature of the system.
c Calculate the V number for a step-index fiber of core diameter 40μm and with 6 2 3
refractive indices of 1.55 and 1.50 respectively for core and cladding when the
wavelength of the propagating wave is 1400nm. Also, calculate the number of modes
the fiber can support for propagation. Assume that the fibre is in the air.

7 a Differentiate Type 1 and Type 2 superconductors and give one example for each. 8 4 2
b State Matthiessen’s rule and how can it be explained in the context of electrical 6 4 3
resistivity. The density and atomic weight of Cu are 8900 kg/m3 and 63.5 respectively.
The relaxation time of electrons in Cu at 300 K is 10-14 s. Calculate the electrical
conductivity of copper.
c For a superconductor specimen, the critical fields are 1.4x105A/m, and 4.2x105A/m for 6 4 3
14 K and 13 K respectively. Calculate the transition temperature and critical fields at 0
K and 4.2 K.

8 a What is Josephson tunnelling? Illustrate the working principle of Super Quantum 8 4 2
Interference Devices (SQUIDs) and mention its applications.
b Define the mobility of free electrons. A certain conductor has an electron concentration 6 4 3
of 5.9 x 1028 m-3. What current density in the conductor corresponds to a drift velocity
of 300m/s? Calculate the mobility of charge carriers when an electric field of 1V/ m is
applied.
c Calculate the critical current and current density for a wire of a lead having a diameter 6 4 3
of 1 mm at 4.2 K. The critical temperature for lead is 7.18 K and Hc = 6.5 × 104 A m–1.

9 a Derive an expression for intrinsic conductivity and explain its temperature dependence.

b A rectangular plane sheet of a semiconductor material has dimensions 2 cm along Y-
direction, and 1 mm along Z- direction. Hall probes are attached on its two surfaces 6 5 3
parallel to X-Z plane and a magnetic field of flux density of 1 T is applied along Z-
direction. A current of 3 mA is flowing in it in the X- direction. Calculate the Hall
voltage measured by the probes, if the Hall coefficient is 3.66 x 10-4 m3/ coulomb.
Also, calculate the charge carrier concentration.
c The electron concentration in an n-type semiconductor is 5 x 1017m-3. Calculate the
material's conductivity if the electron's drift velocity is 350m/s in an electric field of 6 5 3
1000V/m.

10 a What is t h e Hall effect? Obtain an expression for Hall voltage in terms of 8 5 2
t h e Hall coefficient.
b Show that the Fermi level of an intrinsic semiconductor lies in the middle of the 6 5 3
forbidden energy gap.
c Compute the concentration of intrinsic charge carriers in a germanium crystal at 300K. 6 5 3
Given that Eg = 0.72 eV and assume me* = mh* is equal to the rest mass of the electron.
