excavation, as well as all trucking of earth on site and out of site.
• If tests performed on soil in situ demonstrate that some of the conclusions of the Earthwork Design
Study are not applicable (excavation material not meeting requirements to be used as fill, bottom of
excavation not meeting the requirements for foundation subgrade …), the Contractor shall inform
the Company. The Contractor shall in no circumstance take the initiative to modify the sequences,
timing and quantities specified in the Earthworks Design Study without the approval of the Company

4.2 Demolitions

All rough tracks, paved or unpaved roads and more generally all existing buildings, paving, sewerage etc
shall be demolished, and the resulting debris shall be disposed of to a dump located out of construction
site.

All trees, shrubs and vegetation, including roots present on construction site shall be removed and flora
shall be subject to joint inspection by the Ras Laffan Authorities and the Contractor representatives prior
to the beginning of works and shall be relocated at a location identified by the Ras Laffan Authorities’
representative. They shall be either burned on site if safety conditions allow it, or disposed of to a dump
located out of construction site.

4.4 Stripping of Topsoil

Unless otherwise specified, the first 0.20m of topsoil shall be stripped. The valuable topsoil shall be
stripped and stockpiled in a designated area by Ras Laffan Authorities. Otherwise, the topsoil shall be
dumped at the location identified by the Company.

4.5 Excavation

• Excavations shall be performed with appropriate equipment, bulldozer most often and locally,
hydraulic breaker when necessary.
• Temporary excavations in soil with low cohesion, above groundwater shall be either supported or
sloped to a rate of 1 vertical to 1.5 horizontal.
• Excavations shall be kept free from water in compliance with chapter Management of Surface and
Underground Water.
• Bottom of excavated areas shall be sloped to avoid water gathering (ponding), and water shall be
evacuated as per chapter Management of Surface and Underground Water.
• Contractor’s attention is drawn to the potential existence of underground services, drains, cables,
pipes. When obstructions are discovered during excavations, whether they were known to exist or
not, the Contractor shall take all measures to prevent both damage to live networks, and accidents
on site. Excavation shall then be performed by approved methods, including excavations by hand,
protection and diversion of services.
• Use of explosive shall be strictly in accordance with laws and regulations and subject to the

the requirements of document N° DOL-0000-CSP-00053 ‘Tank Foundations and Dikes’ for Tanks.
• Any other foreign material discovered by the Contractor or pointed out to by the Company

The resultant excavation shall be back filled with suitable fill materials following the requirements of
paragraph Fill Materials.

4.7 Stockpiling of Excavated Soil

Excavated soil and crushed rock suitable for fill purposes shall be selected, transported and stockpiled at
locations approved by the Company. The stockpiled soil shall be subjected to sieve analysis and
approval. If the excavated soil is unsuitable for fill material, the next stipulation shall be followed.

4.8 Disposal of Excavated Soil

design, provide, install, operate and maintain
• all necessary systems to lower the water table 300mm below the excavation or foundation formation
level
• sumps, temporary or permanent ditches, culverts, trenches, drains, pumps, pipes and all other
necessary equipment of sufficient capacity to evacuate all surface and underground water

The groundwater level shall be continuously maintained below the excavation level until the filling or
foundation construction and back filling are completed.

4.10 Fill

• Fill and back fill shall be performed with approved materials as specified in paragraph Fill above.
Placement of fill Types A, B, and C according to same paragraph.
• Ground water from site may be used for moisture conditioning of soils for compaction if its
properties allow it. If ground water is aggressive against concrete, it shall not be used. In this case,
water shall be brought to site for compaction purposes.
• Use of seawater for fill around concrete constructions shall be forbidden – not allowed by any
means.

Before any filling begins, the site to be filled shall be cleared. If natural existing soil is to be kept in place,
the first 200 mm of its surface shall be scraped, moisture conditioned, and compacted to an average
density of 95% of MDD, with no individual test result less than 90%, as per ASTM D1557.

stockpiles or borrow pits, to establish the following properties:

• Natural Water Content

• Maximum Dry Density and Optimum Moisture Content
• Particle size distribution, including hygrometer analysis
• Liquid Limit
• Plasticity Index

These tests shall be repeated if the source of material changes or if the material itself changes. A
sufficient number of tests shall be performed to establish representative average and range of properties
(approximately one set of tests per 5 000 m3 : the number of tests shall vary depending on the quantity of
material and the consistency of results).

6.2 Methods

Sampling and testing shall be made in accordance with the following standards :

_ __ • Classification (sieve) test : ASTM D 422 or British equivalent

• Liquid limit, plastic limit, plasticity : ASTM D 4318 or British equivalent

• Moisture-density (compaction) test : ASTM D 1557 or British equivalent
• Field density :ASTM D 1556 or D 2922 or British equivalent
• Moisture content :ASTM D2216 or D3017 or British equivalent
• Sulfate content :BS 1377 Part 3 or equivalent ASTM
• Gypsum content :To be identified by Laboratory

6.3 Frequency of Tests

6.3.1 General Earthworks

• Test on fill

Field density / Moisture content :

a minimum of 2 tests per compacted layer, and every 300 m² for Fill A, 1000 m² for Fills B and C
according to Chapter 3 of the present document.

Additional tests will be required by Company when the quality of moisture control or compaction appears
incorrect.
The compacted layer submitted to test shall not be covered until Company has approved the test results.

• Test on earthworks for foundation

Field density : one test every 100m² of foundations

6.3.2 Laboratory

As per GS CIV 101 Chapter 4.2.2, the Contractor shall install his own laboratory on site, which shall allow
him to check the quality of equipment and materials in use. It will allow him to propose adjustments to the
Company with respect to quality and use.
The site laboratory shall be run at the Contractor’s expenses and include :
• The installation, fitting, maintenance and dismantling of a building on an area suitable for laboratory
use
• The laboratory operation and personnel required to perform tests

6.4 Earthwork Leveling Adjustment

Dimension checking shall be made by Contractor from benchmarks and stakes in compliance with layout
plans.

• Actual position shall be within ± 2 cm of theoretical position.

• Unless otherwise specified on the drawings, maximal deflection over a 3 m ruler shall be no more
than 3 cm, tolerance from true line ± 7.5 cm

If during 2 consecutive days of work, more than 10% of the points that have been checked do not
correspond with the tolerances specified above, the Company reserves the right to stop works, to
examine the methods and equipment utilized, and to revise or replace them.

7 MATERIAL TAKE OFF

Measurement methods of earth works shall be referred to the following construction subcontract
documents:

z RL0-0000-GIQ-14102 (E-1430-102): Inquiry Package for Site Preparation
