(For Both School and Private Candidates)

Instructions
1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of Eleven (11) questions.

2. Answer all questions in section A and B and two (2) questions from section C.

3. Section A carries Sixteen (16) marks, section B Fifty four (54) marks and section C
Thirty (30) marks.

4. All writings must be in blue or black ink, except drawings which should be in pencil

5. Non - programmable calculators are allowed in the examination room.

6. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer sheet (s).

7. The following constants may be used.


 GMV at S.T.P = 22.4 dm3.
 Atomic Masses: H= I , C =12.O =16, Na = 23, S =32.
 1 Faraday = 96500 Coulombs.
 1Litre = 1 dm3 = 1000 Cm3.

3. (a) During an experiment, a form three student mixed dilute sulphuric acid with lead (II)
oxide in the same beaker and observed that the reaction stopped immediately as soon
as it started.
(i) As a form four student, show how the chemical equation for this reaction can be
completed.
(ii) As an expert in Chemistry, explain why this process stopped immediately as soon as it
started?
(iii) Convert the chemical equation in (a) above into net ionic equation.
(b) Air is the mixture of different gases. Using one chemical test for each, describe how oxygen
gas, water vapour and carbon dioxide gas are present in air.
4. (a) A form one student found the following warning signs in the laboratory labeled on the
chemical bottles:-
(i) Corrosive.
(ii)Explosive.
(iii) Flammable.
Which precautions do you think the student should consider when handling those chemicals?
(Two precautions in each warning signs)
(b) Calculate the volume of ethyne gas produced when 32g of 50% calcium dicarbide was
hydrolyzed.
5. (a) A solution of dilute sulphuric acid was mixed with sodium hydroxide solution and both were
at a room temperature of 25℃and the final temperature of the reaction mixture was 45℃
(i) Identify the type of reaction
(ii) Draw an energy level diagram for the reaction in 5 (a)
(b) Calcium carbonate (marble chips) reacted with dilute hydrochloric acid and loss in
mass were recorded as shown in the table below after two minutes.

(i) Explain why there was a loss in mass?


(ii) Write a well-balanced chemical equation between calcium carbonate with dilute
hydrochloric acid
(iii) Explain why the loss in mass after 6th and 8th seconds remained the same.

6. (a) Madam Asha told the students to carry out an experiment of electrolyzing copper (II)
sulphate solution using reactive electrodes.
(i) Which reactive electrodes would actually be used in this experiment?
(ii) Write any three observations made from this experiment.
(iii) Write down both cathodic and anodic reactions that might take place.
(b) The following information were obtained from the bottle of sodium thiosulphate
pentahydrate.
- Assay = 89.8% - Relative molecular weight = 247.8
As a chemist, show how you can prepare 500cm3 of 0.02M by calculating the mass
required to be dissolved in pure water
7. Study the figure given below then answer the questions that follow:-

(a) What do letters A, B, C and D represent?


(b) State the role of substances B and C in this experiment.
(c) Name the method and reason for collection of gas D
(d) Write a well balanced chemical equation for the preparation of gas D
8. The chemistry teacher provided support to the students in determining the products formed when
heat is applied to each of the following substances but they failed. As an expert in this area help
them using balanced chemical equations.
(a) Ammonium nitrate. (c) Silver carbonate.
(b) Mercury nitrate. (d) Ammonium carbonate.

SECTION C (30 Marks)


Answer only two (2) questions in this section.
9. Describe any five ways of softening hard water.
10. Currently Tanzania promotes the use of alternative sources of energy such as natural gas for
various domestic, industries and so many other purposes instead of using charcoal. Explain why
the consumption of charcoal is strictly prohibited while most people look at it as an affordable
one?
11. Two organic compounds react together as summarized by the equation shown below.

(a) Name the compounds marked A, B, and C.


(b) What is the role of concentrated H2SO4 in the reaction?
