Lesson
Impressionism: An Art Style
1
Nowadays, understanding modern art is not just easy but of course it very
difficult. The creation of different worldwide events would somehow determine its
history like series of technological inventions, different social, political, and
environmental changes, thus the effects on the world of art greatly determine its real
existence. Thus, Modern art defines as the contemporary styles of visual art.

Impressionism: Its origin and definition.

From 1872 until the middle of 1880, there are a group of revolutionary Paris-based
artists established these modern art styles and it is called Impressionism.
Impressionism is somehow an art movement that arises in the second half of the 19 th
century.
The term impressionism was derived from one of the famous artwork of Claude
Monet’s Impression Sunrise (Impression, soleil Levant) in 1872. At this moment, the
group of artist captured that name and realized that it was what the best term that
would describe their art movement by which sought to represent their work of arts
which was momentary has an impression of an image.
On the other hand, Impressionism was defined as an art style that tried to capture
realistic or natural images and focus more on the technique of suggesting light and
color to the picture than with the subject matter.

How does Impressionism look like?

Several impressionist artists shifted from the established art practices during that
time, that’s why art movements characterized impressionism in the following
concepts; first, it uses light and color, using short broken strokes seems to be
visible to the viewer, instead of blended colors they often placed unmixed colors side
by side and the output tends to be they do it in reality. Second, it focuses on the
use of everyday subjects like scenes of everyday life such as household chores,
Landscapes, and seascapes, houses, café, and buildings, but it does not feature a
beautiful real-life scenario but the figures of the person or people were distorted
hence the facial features use a few strokes of the brush. Third, it conveys mood and
atmosphere by using the changing effects of lights on color painting outdoors in
natural lights, and in the latter, it suggests a brighter or optimistic mood and
atmosphere for the viewer. Fourth, it focuses on time and motion, impressionist
concentrate on the changes of color and shape caused by the light at different times
of the day known as painting outdoors, and lastly, it uses realistic and natural
images but it seems to be an open composition by moving away from formal
creation to experimental creation. In a canvass, you will determine the unusual
visual angles, sizes of objects that appeared out of proportion and there is an empty
space on the canvass.

The Birth of expressionism is in the early of 19 th century, when the art movement
realizes that an artwork would project a strong emotional force or feelings rather
than with a realistic or natural image where there is light color and short brush
strokes. To make this idea a big success, they started to distort outlines, applied
heavy strong colors and exaggerated forms. Realistic and natural image was rejected
because they worked more in the use of imagination, and strong emotional feelings
that result to the existence of various style of expressionism.

Is Dadaism and Surrealism similar?

Dadaism and Surrealism has similarity to one another but it differs on its style and
use. Dadaism characterized its style through man’s dream fantasies, memory of
images with visual tricks and surprises. Its projections in the view of audiences were
appeared playful, its movement arose from the pain and sufferings of European artist
brought about by World War I. In that particular period of time, there was a man in
the name of Giorgio de Chirico want to prove that his paintings have visual tricks
and surprises. He opposes against the traditional styles of arts by establishing
artworks from about by fears and horrors. The word dada derived from hobbyhorse
which means “ nonstyle”.

On the other hand, the concept of Surrealism is different to Dadaism. Its name
derived from the word “Super realism “by which its artworks clearly depicts the
expression of a departure of life from reality through the artists’ interpretation of

12

What is Social-Realism?
In this kind of artworks artists used their work to express strong emotions and
feelingsto initiate changes, that’s why social realism is an artstyle that expresses
the artist’s role in social reform. One of the famous artists of that time is Ben Shahn.
All of his works primarily talk about a society which is evil to his people where
injustices and inequalities occur. The best example of his works is “Miners Wives “
It talks about the stand of the miners against the hazardous conditions we’ve been
happening to all the coal miners after they experience tragic accidents where in 111
workers of Illinois were killed while their children and wives were mourning because
of the tragic scene. Another social-realism artist has been recognized as the most
expressive and emotional in projecting his art style in the viewer is Pablo Picasso
by creating his masterpiece Guernica in 1937. His works exposes the brutality of war
created by Germany; it serves as his outcry when his town in Spain Guernica was

The group formulated a new art works for the fact that there are many
scientific inventions and discoveries but despite of these the group introduces
intellectualism in the art rather than emotionalism because abstractionist
introduces a logical and rational art works. In the 20th century, for
abstractionism the natural appearances were not essential but instead the
scene shifted into geometrical like shapes, patterns, angles, lines, textures
and varied used of colors. The creation was totally distorted but it has its own
geometrical equivalent because the subject were no longer recognizable.

What are styles grouped under abstractionism?

1. Cubism- A style of art that stresses abstract structure at the expense of
other pictorial elements, especially by displaying several aspects of the same

2. Futurism- It its a movement in art, music and literature begun in Italy

during the early of 1900s.It marked specifically because of its effort to give a
formal expression to the dynamic energy and movement of deep mechanical
processes. It was a fast-paced created artworks which was inspired by a
machine propelled era. The Italian artist who immortalized these kind of
artstyle is Gino Severini where he truly projected motion, force, speed and
strength of mechanical forms.

3. Mechanical Style: An artistic movement in which figure and images were

reduce to its basic elements, such as planes, cones, spheres, cylinders and
other mechanical components; even human figures were mere outlines
without an expression. This concept of artstyle can be seen in the works of
Fernand Le’ger.

The used of different mechanical style was applied like crankshafts,

cylendrical blocks, different pistons were brightened up because of the use of

primary colors. In this artworks life is clue less, its means that there are
application of how life works or dwells in this artworks, its purely

4. Nonobjectivism : It’s an artistic style that had no reference to recognizable

objects such as lines, shapes and colors were used in a cool, impersonal
approach that aimed for balance, unity and stability. This terminology
derived from itself, “non-object “ its means that there is no longer used of
figures or even representations of figures. The artworks are not recognizable

Lesson Abstract Expressionism, Op Art,
4 Pop Art.
Since art is an instrument to initiate reform and changes in the world, another art
movement emerge in the middle of the 19 th-century, primarily this art style has a
connection to expressionism and abstractionism but the big difference of this modern
art style simply adheres to the idea of creating arts that the real expression comes in
the artists' state of mind. This creative part of our minds seems to be the creative
state of minds which opens the channels for unconscious forces to make it visible
though it’s a product of our creative state of minds.

In the vast turn of world events that greatly affected the lives of humanity,
after the effects of devastating two world wars; World War-I (1913-1914) and World
War II (1942-1945), mankind no longer dependent on the civilizations of Europe but
nowadays, it’s the New World continent known as America. In these periods art
movements adhere to another concept of arts known as abstract expressionism.

What is abstract expressionism?

It simply refers to the group of young daring artists who succeeded to create their
concept and synthesis of Europe’s cubist and surrealist styles, and the group became
popularly known as abstract expressionism . This art style has two forms; Action
painting and Color Field painting.

1. Action Painting: An action painting was popularized by Jackson Pollock.

His work of art projected on huge canvases which were spread on the floor,
where there was splattering, squirting, and dribbling paint. His creation has
no concrete pattern or design in mind, it was not pre-planned. In 1943, He
had the first one-man show in New York just to give worldwide attention to
the beauty and value of abstract expressionism in the world.

2. Color Field Painting: This form of abstract expressionism uses different color
saturations (purity, vividness, and intensity) just to create a desired effect in the
artworks. Some of the works of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman recognized that
both of their artworks have a huge field of vibrant colors, due on its contrast to the
vigorous gestures of those artists who advocate the action painting.

How Pop Art and Op Art get the attention of world scenario?
In 1960s people wants to see new art creation which is unique or not in common. In
America, New York School might be in trouble because its momentum was
decreasing or in short, it was slowed down. In this era, a new breed of artists came
into the world scenario with a different approach and style where the inclusion of
using lighter treatment and flashes of humor, and irreverence were projected in their
artworks.
These movements are called pop art, op art, and conceptual art.

27
What is Pop Art?
Similar to what the Dadaism movement was established before. In 1960, the
pop art movement wants to initiate reforms and changes. Compare to the serious
tone of Dadaism the pop artists seem to enjoy non-sense and wanted the people of
the world to be happy by laughing. In that way, these made use of easily recognizable
objects and images from the emerging consumer.

Pop art refers to a style of art, projected in a consumer culture, thus; mass media
and popular culture, thereby making it much more accessible to the average person.
The name pop art is a short term for popular art.

When and how did op-art begin? A Hungarian-born Victor Vasarely is the
key figure in the creation of op art. When we speak of the word op art in its
simplest way it is known as optical art, which refers to an art movement that
emerged in the 1960s. It was considered an experiment in a person’s visual
experience. To define what op-art means, it is a form of an action painting
with the action taking place in the viewer’s eye. In this particular art style,
lines, spaces, and color were precisely planned and position to give the illusion

28
of movement. But in general perception, Op art is more about physical
sensations. It was developed thoroughly in the United States of America where
the viewers give eyesight or eye perception on his art style.

Finally, Conceptual art artists questioned the idea of art as objects to be

bought and sold. But for themselves, their artistic ideas and artworks would
be in life temporarily, it ended to be their best ever masterpiece. The
conceptualist pointed out the difference between conceptual artwork and a
traditional painting or sculpture is that conceptual art is that the
conceptualist’s work that requires little or no physical craftsmanship. The
artist exerts their time and effort to create a better idea or subject so that a
new masterpiece would benefit the people.

Hence, conceptual art defined as an art that is intended to convey an idea or

concept for a theme or a subject that somehow depends on the perceiver, and
need not involve the creation and even appreciation of the traditional art
objects like paintings, sculpture, and architecture. The most essential thing

29
that would happen in the emergence of these new modern art styles is that
people learn how to choose or decide what kinds of art style which they were
like to apply as his or their special skills in the future. Moreover; the entrance
of conceptual art in the scene resulted in a big shift or changes for the art
lover’s perception towards artistic excellence.

Lesson
Contemporary Art Forms
5

In the 20th century, artists began to create art that projected or staged an
event wherein the artists perform to sing, dance and talk. In this era, we saw the rise
of new art forms aside from the traditional ones of painting and sculpture. These
modern art styles were called Contemporary Art and their two forms were installation
art and performance art.

In the 20th century, another new art form rises from traditional to innovation. The
Existence of painting and sculpture was obsolete for the fact that humanities in this
era seem to appreciate Contemporary arts. Taking their lead from being an action-
oriented happening, artists began to create and innovate another style of modern art,
It is called Contemporary Arts. Contemporary art in simple understanding,
contemporary art is the art of today. It has two forms namely; Installation art and
performance art.

1. What is Installation Art? When and how it begins?

If we go deeper in knowing its definition, Installation art is somehow referred to as
an art that is created, constructed, or installed on the site where it is exhibited, often
incorporating materials or physical features on the site. In fact, it was a
contemporary art form that seems to use sculptural materials in transforming or
creating a particular space into a modified art install area. Usually, in creating
installation art, artists created a life-size or it is more even larger than the original
form. It’s not necessary to use or confined bigger spaces but it can be constructed or
position in public or private space either indoor or outdoor. Its concept begins in the
20th century when people want reform in an art style that why they created a new
one which is contemporary art. The famous artists of these art forms are the
following; Santiago Bose, Sid Gomez Hildawa, Edgar Talusan Fernandez, and
Roberto Villanueva.

Nowadays, there are many materials were used in these days application of
installation art, Everyday items and different indigenous materials can be used, the
inclusion of new media as material in making a progressive artwork is necessary
such as video, sound, performances, and computers. Relevantly, the usage of
installation art creates an entire sensory or sets as a new experience for the viewer
as he or she walk-through in the gallery viewing different scenario of life.

2. What is Performance Art? How essential it is?

When we say Performance art, it is understood that an individual is performing. In

this sense, it is defined as a form of theatrical art which features different activity of
the artist and how his works were presented in a variety of media. In other words,
Performance art is a specific form of modern art in which the actions, emotions, and
expressions of an individual or a group constitute a work of art in a particular place
or area. It has four basic elements; time, space, the performer’s body, and a
relationship between the audience and performer.

35
In doing a performance art you
need to remember that the
performer himself or herself is
the artist. Rather than the
actor playing a character as in
a stage play.

Image 5

In performance art this includes

theatre, dance, music , mime,
juggling and gymnastic.

Image 6

The performance art space or place to practice the performances were possibly in the
art gallery, museum or theatre café’, bar, or even in the street corner. Sometimes
performances were based on a traditional storyline or plot of a famous stage play
that may last just for a few minutes of life, sometimes it extends as long the
performance is good and applauded. The likes of Jose Beuys, Marina Abramovic are
ones called a performing artist.
