Threading and Operating Sewing Machine

Background Information for Learners:

Sewing machine is an equipment used when sewing any project, there are
different types of sewing machine it depends on its use. The Lockstitch or Domestic
sewing machine are the very common machines in schools. Let us familiarize
ourselves with the basic parts of lockstitch and portable electric sewing machine. In

Brief Discussion of the Lesson:

Threading the sewing machine correctly is essential for smooth and efficient
sewing. It ensures that the thread is properly guided through the machine, allowing
stitches to be formed accurately. Threading the sewing machine correctly is of utmost
importance in dressmaking/tailoring for the following reasons:
1. Proper Stitch Formation: Threading the sewing machine correctly ensures that the
thread is guided through the machine's various components in the intended manner.
2. Smooth Fabric Feed: When the sewing machine is threaded correctly, the thread
interacts smoothly with the fabric during the sewing process.
3. Tension Control: The correct threading of the sewing machine ensures that the
thread passes through the tension discs properly.
4. Machine Performance: Threading the sewing machine correctly allows it to operate at
its optimal performance level.
5. Time Efficiency: Proper threading saves time during the sewing process.

In summary, threading the sewing machine correctly is vital for achieving high-
quality stitches, ensuring smooth fabric feed, maintaining proper tension, optimizing
machine performance, and saving time. It is an essential skill that every
dressmaker/tailor should master to produce well-made garments.

I. THREADING THE MACHINE

A. Order of Threading in the Upper Part
Steps:
1. Put the spool of thread on the spool pin.
2. Bring the thread to the thread guide .
3. Pull the thread between the metal disc of the tension.
4. Bring the thread up to the thread take up lever and raise it as it goes.
5. Pull the thread down to the thread guide.
6. Pull it through the lower thread guide.
7. Thread the needle.

B. Threading the Lower Part of Lockstitch Sewing Machine

Steps:
1. Remove the bobbin case by pulling on the bobbin case latch.
2. Remove the bobbin from the case and wind the thread.
3. Put the bobbin back to the bobbin case and pull the thread through the little slot
at least 4 in.
4. Be sure that you hear the bobbin case inside the shuttle.
5. Start the mechanism by rolling the balance wheel forward to get the thread of the
bobbin through the needle.
6. Pull the upper and lower thread together by 4 inches.

II. COMMON MACHINE TROUBLES

Machine Troubles Causes

Machine runs noisily - Insufficient oil
- loose screw
- thread or dust clogged in the shuttle
machine rotates - too tight belt
heavily - insufficient oil
- bearing or shuttle race is clogged with dust or
thread
Needle thread - improper threading
breaks - tight tension
- thread too coarse
- needle blunt set incorrectly
- presser foot not properly adjusted
- poor quality thread
- seam maybe too thick or heavy
- bobbin case turns
- fabric is pulled forcibly
- needle may be bent
- size of needle
- tension
Skip Stitches - dull needle
- improper threading
- unbalance tension of the upper and lower
threads
- defective thread take up lever
Upper thread breaks - improper threading
- improperly attached needle
- bent or dull needle
- tight upper thread
- poor quality thread
- unmatched needle
Lower or under - improper winding of the thread in the bobbin
thread breaks - bent or dull needle
- poor quality thtread
- incorrectly set feed dog
- bobbin does not freely turn
- too tight bobbin case spring
Seams pucker - too long stitch length for the fabric
- tension is too tight
- size of needle and thread do not match
- too high feed dog adjustment
- too heavy pressure on the presser foot
Fabric does not - feed dog not in proper sewing position
move - stitch regulator not set on zero
- too tight pressure on presser foot
Fabri jams in the - needle may be too big
machine - throat plate
