Master of Science in Electrical Power Engineering
1. Introduction
The Purbanchal University offers the Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in Electrical Power Engineering with an
aim to produce highly qualified human resources capable of carrying out professional works and conducting
independent research in the field of electrical power engineering. The details of the Program are as follows:
2. Program Title
Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Electrical Power Engineering (EPE)
3. Program Objectives
The Master of Science in Electrical Power Engineering program focuses on fulfilling the manpower demand from
large electrical engineering projects and electrical utilities across the country providing capabilities to each student in
electrical power engineering domain. The graduates of the program will be able:
i. to carry out higher studies as an independent researcher in the relevant field;
ii. to practice professionally as an electrical power engineering expert.
4. Program Duration
The minimum period for completion of the M.Sc. in Electrical Power Engineering Program is 2 years (4
semesters). Failing to pass within 2 years, one must pass all the courses within 4 years to award the degree.
5. Admission Requirements
The Candidate must have passed Bachelor in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with minimum 50%
marks or C+ grade (CGPA 2.40) in aggregate.
6. Selection Procedures
Candidates fulfilling the Admission Requirements will be selected for admission based on the Merit, which
will be assessed in terms of total marks in the Entrance Examination.
7. Course Contents
The Program consists of the following courses:

Core Courses are mandatory, which provide essential knowledge required to develop expertize in the field
of electrical power engineering
Elective Courses provide knowledge and skills in a particular field of interest.
Project Work orients the students to carry out the final semester thesis independently under the guidance
of a supervisor. Each student must prepare the proposal that includes Introduction, Literature Review,
Methodology, Tools and software, and Expected Outcome of the research. Each student must defend the
project work which will be evaluated by the faculty appointed by the college.
Thesis provides the opportunity to carry out the research under the guidance of the supervisor. Each student
must submit and defend the Proposal, present and defend the thesis at Mid-term and Final stage of the
work.
8. Course Credit System
The Course Structure is in Credit System. Each course is assigned with a number of credits representing
its weightage.
9 Course Codes
Course Code contains two alphabets followed by three numerical digits. EE stands for electrical power
engineering. The first numerical digit 7 denotes First year and 8 denotes Second year. The second numerical
digit denotes the semester; 1 for First, 2 for Second, 3 for Third, and 4 for Fourth. The third numerical digit
denotes the particular course.

A faculty/Course Coordinator will evaluate the academic performance of the students through internal
assessment. University will conduct the examination for final evaluation. The internal assessment will be
based on attendance, assignments, presentation and internal exam. A weightage of 50% will be given to
the internal assessment and 50% to the final examination. To attend the final examination, minimum 50%
marks is required in internal assessment. Failing to secure the 50% mark she/he must be reassessed for
internal evaluation. Failure in any subject of previous semester(s) can enroll in the next semester.
However, a candidate must pass in all the subjects before final thesis defense.

Grade ‘D’ and ‘F’ denote fail and ‘W’ denotes withdrawal/absent respectively.
Grade sheets contain the following details:
• The list of subjects with credit and obtained grade.
• The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) for the semester and
• The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of all subjects put together up to that Semester from
first Semester onwards
SGPA is calculated based on the fallowing formula:
Sum of No. of Credits X Grade Point
SGPA =
Sum of Credits
CGPA is calculated in a similar manner, considering all the subjects enrolled from first semester onwards.
