JANYARY 2022
B.A./B.Sc.
Saturday, January 15, 2022
HSTCR1012T 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM
2 hours 30 minutes
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
Full Marks : 50

PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU START WRITING:

 Of the questions attempted, the answers to only the first required number of questions (as stipulated
in the question paper) will be evaluated. So please do not attempt extra questions.

 Only HAND WRITTEN answer scripts (using black or blue ink) on A4 size sheets will be
considered.
 Answer in your own words as far as practicable.
 Save the scanned pages to a single PDF file and name the document accurately i.e. Roll No_Paper
Code.PDF (example: 147_HPHCR2032T).
 Students have to write legibly their answers on A4 size sheets, scanning them and sending the entire
answer script as one PDF file to the following email address (in REPLY mode) within 30 minutes
of the completion of the examination: [email protected]
 The scanned answer scripts should have enough clarity to enable evaluation.
 On top of each page the following information should be entered by the student: Name, Roll
Number, Paper Code , Date, and Page Number
 No multiple submissions would be allowed.

The marks are given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

The question paper consists of 3 pages.

Of the questions attempted, the answers to only the first required number of
questions (as stipulated in the question paper) will be evaluated.
So, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT EXTRA QUESTIONS.

Answer ANY TWO questions from QUESTIONS 1-4 and ANY TWO from QUESTIONS 5-8.

1. Write a short note on any one method of collecting primary data. [5]

2. A random sample of 50 households has been chosen from a certain locality. Records on
monthly visit to the doctors are available for each household from Jan 2019 to Dec 2020.
Identify the type of data. Suppose one is interested in finding whether there is any
seasonal pattern of visiting the doctors. How will she condense the data? Identify the data
so formed. Suggest an appropriate diagrammatic presentation of the condensed data. [5]

3. Given the frequency distribution of height (in cm) and the frequency distribution of
weight (in kg) with open end classes for a group of n individuals, how can you compare
the dispersion of height with that of weight? [5]

4. If d2 is the mean square deviation about x, S is the standard deviation and x  x  a , then
find the relation between d, a and S. [5]

5. (a) If the correlation coefficient between x and y is -0.42, find the correlation between
2 + 0.5 and 0.3 − 1.8 .
(b) Show that the arithmetic mean of the absolute values of the regression coefficients
cannot be lesser than the absolute value of the correlation coefficient.
(c) The correlation between yield of paddy and sales of smart phones over the last five
years in India has come out to be 0.92. Interpret the finding.
(d) Classify the underlined according to scales of measurement.
“Students in the class were asked to state their preferred beverage (tea, coffee, milk)
and how many cups of the preferred beverage they consume per day”. [6+6+6+2]

6. (a) Suppose a variable assumes only two values a and b with equal frequency. Find the
mean deviation about mean and standard deviation.
(b) Suppose the relationship between x and y can be described by the mathematical
equation, y  ab x e , where a and b are unknown parameters and e is the associated
error. Converting the relationship to a linear one and based on n pairs of
observations on the two variables x and y estimate the model parameters by applying
least square theory. Obtain the residuals. Interpret the case that residual variance is
zero.
(c) Let Y denoted the predicted response, x the predictor and a, b, c are parameters. Are
the following linear models? Justify.
(i) Y  exp(a  bx  cx 2 ); Y  0, x  R
(ii) Y  a  bx  cx 2 ; Y  R, x  R [8+10+2]

7. (a) Consider the frequency distribution pertaining to a continuous variable x.
x 10-20 20 -30 30-40 40-50
f 15 10 8 4
On calculation one student got the answer of Pearson’s measure of skewness as 3.5,
while another student got it as -1.5. Without showing numerical calculations,
comment on the correctness of the answers with proper justification.
(b) For clusters of size 5, the intra-class correlation coefficient has come out to be -0.50.
Validate the statement.
(c) Interpret the case b2 =1, where symbol has its usual significance. [8+8+4]

8. (a) Show that the correlation coefficient between response variable ( y ) and its predicted
value (Y ) is non negative and numerically equal to the correlation coefficient r.
(b) Check the validity of the finding : r 2  0.81, e yx2  0.50 .
(c) Interpret the cases : (i) r 2  e yx2  1 (ii) r 2  e yx2  1
(d) Show that Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient lies in the interval [−1,+1].
Interpret the boundary cases. [5+6+4+5]
