February 14 Lesson Plan (Mendenhall and Sinchin Method)

This lesson plan for Grade 10 Mathematics focuses on teaching students about deciles as measures of position in data sets. The objectives include illustrating deciles, computing them from ungrouped data, and applying these concepts to real-life problems. Various teaching methods and resources are outlined, including group activities and assessments to reinforce learning.

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of measures of position.
The learner is able to investigate thoroughly the mathematical relationship in
B. Performance Standards various situations, formulate real-life problems involving measures of position and,
solve them using a variety of strategies.
C. Learning The learner illustrates the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles and

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Illustrate decile as a measure of position.
D. Specific Objectives
2. Compute the decile of ungrouped data.
3. Show interest in solving real-life problems involving measure of position.

A. Daily Routine (2 minutes) (Prayer)
Please stand. Let’s pray.
_______________ lead the prayer.
(In the name of the Father, the Son, the
Holy Spirit Amen….)
(Greetings)
Good morning class!
Good morning, Ma’am! Mabuhay!
(Classroom Management) Mahaltana!
Before you take your seat, please arrange the
chairs properly
(The students will arrange their chairs.)
Okay, you may take your seat.

Thank you, Ma’am! (The students will

take their seat)
(Checking of Attendance)
_______________, is there any absent
today? (The students’ answers may vary)

Very good!
B. Reviewing previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson (5 Last meeting we discussed about solving the
minutes) value for quartile using linear interpolation.
The students will raise their hand.
When do we interpolate when finding the
value of a quartile?

Yes . We interpolate when the quartile

position we obtained is in a decimal
point.

Very well said!

C. Establishing a purpose for the lesson Activity: “ Step to your Decile”
(3 minutes)
On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rank
your academic performance or your
confidence in Math?

10 – Outstanding
9 - Excellent
8 - Very Good
7 - Good
6 - Slightly Above Average
5 - Average
4 - Slightly Below Average
3 - Below Average
2 - Needs a Lot of Improvement
1 - Very Poor

Raise your hand if you scale yourself as 1.

What about 2? ( Continue asking up to 10.)

(The students will rank theirselves by

raising their hand.)

D. Presenting examples/instances of the What is one small step you can take to move
new lesson (5 mins) to a higher decile?
(The students’ answer may vary.)
Just like in statistics, deciles help us see
where we stand. The great thing is, we can
always move up!

E. Discussing new concepts and

practicing new skills #1 (5 mins) The Deciles for Ungrouped Data

The median divides the data set into two

equal parts. Quartiles divide the
data set into four equal parts. Deciles, on the
other hand, are values that divide
the data set into ten equal parts.

Deciles are computed in the same way as the

quartiles.

First, we arrange the data in ascending order.

Next, locate the position of the deciles in the

data set.

To do this, we use the following formula:

k
Position of D k= (n+1)
10

k is the rank of the decile required

n is the number of elements in the data

and round UP to the nearest integer. Finally,

find the value that corresponds to the
computed position.
Discussing new concepts and Example:
practicing new skills #2 (15 Mr. Ling is an English teacher. He is
minutes) interested in the reading speed
of his students. The following are the
numbers of words his students
can read in one minute.

50, 25, 23,30,42, 20, 13, 16,16, 10, 12, 11,

11,11, 19

Find the seventh decile.

Step 1: Arrange the numbers of words read

by the students in one minute in ascending
order.

10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 13, 16, 16, 19, 20, 23,
25,30,42, 50

Step 2: Find the n or the total number of

data.

Step 3: Locate the position of 𝐷7

rounding down.

Find the 11th value in the data set.

Yes .
In decile, we divided the data into 10
equal parts.

Do you have any questions? Clarifications?

None Ma’am!
Since you don’t have any questions, get 1
