Kouzes, J. M., & Posner, B. Z. (2011). The five practices of exemplary leadership (2nd ed.).

University and the Chairman Emeritus of the Tom Peters Company. Barry Posner is the

resources for improving leadership. Barry resides in Monte Sereno, California, whereas
James resides in San Jose.

James and Barry discovered in their research project that leaders display five core
practices when they are at their personal best. These five practices are model of the way,
inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart.
These authors emphasized that a quality leader is a role model who clarifies his values and
align them with his actions. He also needs to share his aspirations to others and imagine a
world of possibilities. He must be a risk taker, not afraid of change and is always excited for
new opportunities. He need not to be selfish instead shares his authority to others and build
trust. Most importantly, he must recognize the good deeds of others and celebrate their
successes.

The Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders is a guide book for many aspiring leaders. It
consists of data from millions of leaders. It originated from a decades of research. Simply, it
is proven and tested. A lot of testimonies are written in the article which shows that it is a
credible source. Also, it is often used by businesses in their corporate training programs. It is
an article that influences the corporate world by providing them with five core practices and
ten commitments to become an exemplary leader. Yet these practices are not as easy they
seem. It takes much effort to become a quality leader who embodies these traits.

In the field of teaching, leadership is one skill that educators should possess for we are
not only teachers but leaders of our learners. We lead them to thrive for the better. Like what
this article has emphasized, we are “learning to lead”. Thus, this article helped me reflect on
my knowledge and skills in the aspect of leadership. Most importantly, it opened my eyes to
various ways on how to improve my leadership skills and become an exemplary leader.
