Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has been recognized and declared as a Deemed to be
University U/S 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India,
New Delhi on the basis of the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, (UGC) New Delhi:
vide notification No F.9-14/2011-U.3 (A) dated 25th August 2017. It became the First University in the
World exclusively for the tribal providing fully free and fully residential education along with other
facilities. We are proud to share that KISS Deemed to be University has been accredited with grade ‘A’
by NAAC (1st Cycle) in the year 2024.

Accordingly, the University has been functioning since the afore-mentioned date with all its U.G. P.G.
and Ph.D. departments. The University has been admitting students from within and outside the states,
i.e. Jharkhand, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur, West-Bengal, Chhattisgarh etc.

KISS Deemed to be University aims at striving further the academics to newer heights and focusing on
teaching and research in ‘Unique and Emerging areas of Knowledge’ related to specific innovative areas
which are not being offered at any other Institution in the World.

The University shall:

 Foster the unique culture of the tribal and design the curriculum so as to encourage the study
and development of the languages, arts and culture of the tribal
 Take special measures to protect, preserve and promote tribal culture and tradition
 Promote an awareness and understanding of the needs of the tribal communities and prepare
the students to fulfil those needs
 Make special provisions for innovative and integrated courses in humanities, science and
commerce in the educational programmes of the University
 Take special measures for inter-disciplinary studies in the University
 Create a world free of hunger, poverty and illiteracy
 Empower indigenous youth through holistic education ensuring harmonious growth of body,
mind and soul
 Cultivate divine qualities like humanism, compassion, honesty and simplicity and be a model for
global education reforms
 Promote indigenous sustainability by empowering students through accessible, quality
education and vocational training
 Document, preserve and disseminate local tribal knowledge, culture and tradition through
innovative study, research and strategic resource pooling and collaboration.

Keeping in view the above objectives, the approach of the University has been to evolve policies and
programmes which will make KISS Deemed to be University a unique and distinct addition to the national
resources in higher education. The university has identified and is concentrating upon some major
innovative courses which are also relevance to protect, preserve and promote tribal culture and tradition.

The basic academic units of the University are not single discipline departments but multi-disciplinary
Schools of Studies. A School has been visualised as larger units comprising of departments which are
linked with each other in terms of subject-matter and methodology as well as in terms of problem areas.

In matters relating to enrolment, steps have been taken to ensure that students from the remotest parts
of the Odisha and the neighbouring tribal populated states are able to join the University without any
hassle.

The admission policy of the University is governed by the following principles:

 To facilitate admission of the poorest of the poor tribal students not only of the state but also of
the country.
 To prioritize the admission of the meritorious tribal girls.
 To promote admission of extraordinary sports achievers.
 To bring transparency to the admission process.
 To enable study and research on various aspects of tribal culture, literature, languages. rights,
sciences and resource management
 To broaden the placement avenues of all the pass out students
 To ensure earning while learning under the “Earn While You Learn’’ scheme of the University.

Guidelines
 As the largest fully residential and fully free educational institute for the tribal (Indigenous
people), KISS DU is committed to providing free accommodation, food, healthcare and education
to tribal students from families in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category only.
 KISS DU gives special emphasis to women’s education, thereby giving preference to girl students
during admission.
 ST students belonging to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) are also given preference
during the admission process.
 The admission forms for admission of students into U.G., P.G. and Ph.D. are available on the KISS
DU website https://university.kiss.ac.in or www.kiss.ac.in as per notification.
 Online procedures for submission of the application will be available on the website.

 The number of seats being limited, admission will be made on the basis of entrance mark and
merit. Merit list will be drawn in accordance with the provisions of Admission Policy of the
University.

Admission into under graduation (U.G.) Programme


The University introduces Four Year Under Graduate Programme (FYUGP) as per the NEP 2020 from the
Academic session 2024-25. The U.G. courses are prepared as per the Curriculum and Credit Framework
for the Four Year U.G. courses by the UGC from July 2024 onwards. New Education Policy (NEP) is being
implemented by the Indian government's ministry of human resource development (MHRD).

The NEP 2020 states, “Assessments of educational approaches in undergraduate education that
integrate the humanities and arts with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) have
consistently shown positive learning outcomes, including increased creativity and innovation, critical
thinking and higher-order thinking capacities, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, communication skills,
more in-depth learning and mastery of curricula across fields, increases in social and moral awareness,
etc., besides general engagement and enjoyment of learning”

Accordingly, the undergraduate degree will be of either 3 or 4-year duration, with multiple entry and
multiple exit options within this period, with appropriate certifications.

Awarding UG Certificate, UG Diploma and Degrees

UG Certificate

Students who opt to exit after completion of the first year and have secured 40 credits will be awarded
a UG certificate if, in addition, they complete one vocational course of 4 credits during the summer
vacation of the first year. These students are allowed to re-enter the degree programme within three
years and complete the degree programme within the stipulated maximum period of seven years.

UG Diploma

Students who opt to exit after completion of the second year and have secured 80 credits will be awarded
the UG diploma if, in addition, they complete one vocational course of 4 credits during the summer
vacation of the second year. These students are allowed to re-enter within a period of three years and
complete the degree programme within the maximum period of seven years.

3-Year UG Degree

Students who wish to undergo a 3-year UG programme will be awarded UG Degree in the Major
discipline after successful completion of three years, securing 120 credits and satisfying the minimum
credit requirement.

4-Year UG Degree (Honours)

A four-year UG Honours degree in the major discipline will be awarded to those who complete a four-
year degree programme with 160 credits and have satisfied the credit requirements.

4-Year UG Degree (Honours with Research)

Students who secure 75% marks and above in the first six semesters and wish to undertake research at
the undergraduate level can choose a research stream in the fourth year. They should do a research
project or dissertation under the guidance of a faculty member of the College. The research
project/dissertation will be in the major discipline. The students, who secure 160 credits, including 12
credits from a research project/dissertation, are awarded UG Degree (Honours with Research).

Note: Honours students not undertaking research project will do 3 theory courses for 12 credits in lieu of a
research project/Dissertation.

The 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor's courses, however, shall be the preferred option since it allows the
opportunity to experience the full range of holistic and multidisciplinary education in addition to a focus
on the chosen major and minors as per the choices of the student”

In accordance with the NEP 2020, the UGC has formulated a new student-centric “Curriculum and Credit
Framework for Undergraduate Programmes (CCFUP)” incorporating a flexible choice-based credit
system, multidisciplinary approach, and multiple entry and exit options. This will facilitate students to
pursue their career path by choosing the subject/field of their interest.

Keeping this in view, admission into UG courses in KISS Deemed to be University will be channelled into
different programmes under Arts, Science and Commerce streams.

General Eligibility Criteria

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.): A candidate, who has passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate
Examination of a State Board of Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent examination of any other
statutory Board or University, shall be eligible for admission into Four Year Under Graduate Programme
in Arts.

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.): A candidate, who has passed Higher Secondary School Certificate
Examination of a State Board of Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent examination of any other
Secondary Board or University with English and any three Science subjects out of: Physics, Chemistry,
Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Geography, Anthropology, Economics etc. shall be eligible for
admission into Four Year Under Graduate Programme in Science.

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.): A candidate, who has passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate
Examination of a State Board of Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent examination of any other
statutory Board or University, shall be eligible for admission into Four Year Under Graduate Programme
in Commerce.

Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.): A candidate, who has passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate
Examination of a State Board of Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent examination of any other
statutory Board or University, shall be eligible for admission into U.G. Programme in B.Voc.

Selection Procedure

a) Selection of applicants will be done on the basis of merit.


b) The candidate must have studied and passed Class XII examination or its equivalent from a single
recognized board.
c) The candidate must have studied and passed Class XII examination of any Board / university in
India, or any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of
Indian Universities (AIU).
d) Candidates, who have appeared at the qualifying examinations and the results thereof are
awaited, may be eligible to apply. However, they have to submit the Certificate and Mark sheet
of the qualifying examination within ten days after the publication of result, or on the date of
entrance test whichever is later. Otherwise, their cases for selection shall not be considered.
e) The provisionally selected candidates (List will be published in the Notice Board/ Website) will
be required to take admission on the scheduled day of admission. Under no circumstances
extension of date of admission shall be allowed. However, ‘five working days’ time will be given
to the candidates for the submission of transfer certificate/any other document required for
admission and for this the candidate is required to submit an undertaking in this regard. No
further claim for admission will be entertained after the expiry of five days.
f) A total of 5% seats each in all the departments are reserved for outstanding sports achievers and
PH/OH applicants as per UGC guidelines. However, the management reserves the right to select
or reject the candidature of any applicants without showing any reason thereof.

Documents to be produced at the time of Counselling/Admission:

 Print out of the application form (printed application form after online submission) with a recent
passport size photograph affix on it.
 Certificate of High School Examination or equivalent in support of age
 Mark Sheet and Certificate of Higher Secondary Examination or equivalent examination
 School or College Leaving Certificate
 Migration Certificate
 Recent e-Caste (only STs), Income and Resident Certificates
 Ration Card of Parents
 Five recent photographs (3 passport size and 2 stamp size) with white background
 Aadhar Card (student and parents)

The photocopies of all documents should be signed by the candidate as proof of self-attestation & are to
be submitted. Submission of incorrect information with intention to do fraud may lead to cancellation of
admission, and make the candidate liable for criminal proceedings.

Admission into post-graduation (P.G.) Programme


Admission into P.G. will be channelled into different Schools under Arts, Science and Commerce streams.
All courses will focus on different aspects of tribal studies such as: Culture, Philosophy, Heritage, Science
& Technology, Linguistics & Literature, Resource Management, Legal Studies and Rights.

General Eligibility Criteria

a) Candidate should have passed Three-year Degree Examination in Arts/Science/Commerce/Law


(B.A./B.Sc./B.Com./LLB), or any equivalent examination from a UGC recognized University with
minimum 50% of marks. He or she is required to obtain Honours in the concerned subject or at
least 45% in aggregate in the same examination where the said subject is a “Pass” subject.
b) Candidates, who have appeared at the qualifying examinations and the results thereof are
awaited, may be eligible to apply. However, they have to submit the Provisional Certificate and
Mark sheet of the qualifying examination within ten days after the publication of result, or on
the date of entrance test whichever is later. Otherwise, their cases for selection shall not be
considered.
c) A candidate, who already possess a P.G. Degree, shall not be eligible to take admission in the
same or any other P.G. Degree/P.G. Diploma/Certificate Courses in the University.

Eligibility for Specific Courses

Apart from the general eligibility criteria, admission to P.G. programmes within the seven departments
will be as follows:

1. School of Tribal Culture, Philosophy and Eco-Spiritualism (STCPE): ST students having Honours
or Pass in Political Science, Philosophy, History and Performing Arts at UG level will be given
preference for admission in this School. However, students having Honours or Pass in any other
Arts subject at UG level are also eligible to apply.
2. School of Tribal Heritage and Tribal Indology (STHTI): ST students having Honours or Pass in
Education, Home Science, Psychology at UG level will be given preference for admission in this
School. However, students having Honours or Pass in any other Arts subject at UG level are also
eligible to apply.
3. School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures (SCTLL): ST students having Honours
or Pass in English, Odia, Sanskrit, Hindi or Santali at UG level will be given preference for
admission in this School. However, students having Honours or Pass in any other Arts subject at
UG level are also eligible to apply.
4. School of Tribal Legal Studies and Tribal Rights (STLSTR): ST students having Honours or Pass
in Anthropology, Sociology and Social Work at UG level will be given preference for admission

in this School. However, students having Honours or Pass in any other Arts subject at UG level
are also eligible to apply.
5. School of Indigenous Knowledge, Science and Technology (SIKST): ST students having Honours
or Pass in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science at UG level will be given
preference for admission in this School. However, students having Honours or Pass in any other
Science subject at UG level are also eligible to apply.
6. School of Comparative Indic Studies and Tribal Science (SCISTS): ST students having Honours
or Pass in Botany, Zoology, Food Sciences and Biotechnology at UG level will be given preference
for admission in this School. However, students having Honours or Pass in any other Science
subject at UG level are also eligible to apply.
7. School of Tribal Resource Management (STRM): ST students having Honours or Pass in
Commerce, Economics and Geography at UG level will be given preference for admission in this
School. However, students having Honours or Pass in any other Arts subject at UG level are also
eligible to apply.

Online Admission

(i) Online filling up of application form shall begin as per notification from the University.
(ii) The applicant must submit the application form online before the last day of submission.

admission link
(iv) The candidates should read the Prospectus carefully before filling up of the forms online.

The candidates can then fill-up the forms online. After completion of all the fields in the form, the
candidates should click the “submit” button. Thereafter a page will be opened with all the information of
the candidate that he/she has filled in. The candidate then has to take a printout of the page and submit
it along with the following documents when he/she will be called for verification.

a) Two recent passport size colour photographs of the candidate.


b) Self-attested copies of the Mark sheets and Certificates of all examinations starting from H.S.C
for determining eligibility.
c) A self-attested copy of the e-Caste, e-income and e-residence certificate in original and
photocopy obtained from government, in absence of which the candidate will not be eligible.
d) An attested copy of the certificate from CDMO regarding his/her disability for 40% or more (in
case of Physically Handicapped Candidates).
e) Photocopy of Aadhar card and ration card
f) The undertaking form(s) should be duly filled in and signed by the applicant and his/her father
or natural guardian. The envelope containing the application complete in all respect must be
super scribed “Application for Admission in the P.G. Department of ............” KISS Deemed to be
University.
g) Application incomplete in any manner shall be rejected.

Selection Procedure

(i) Admission cannot be claimed as a matter of right.


(ii) Absence of a candidate in the written test shall disqualify him/her for admission.
(iii) Selection for admission into different Courses shall be considered on the basis of marks secured
in the Written Entrance Test and Career Mark with 50% and 50% weightage each.
(iv) The written test will cover Honours syllabi of the subject in the qualifying examination of the
University.
(v) Physically Handicapped (PH) with 40% and above disability may avail 5% reservation. The
reservation is applied subject wise in each course. However, any subsequent modification in the
reservation policy as per the Government of Odisha notification will be notified accordingly.
(vi) 5% of the total career mark secured by the candidate in qualifying examination shall be added
to the career mark in qualifying examination to a maximum of 15 in case of participants in the
Inter University Sports and State Team approved by the National Organization provided that in

order to be eligible for such concession under sportsman category the player concerned should
have participated in the respective competitions within two years prior to the date of application
for admission.

Selection will be made on the basis of merit determined as per the following criteria: Admission into the
P.G. courses shall be on the basis of 50% Career and 50% Entrance Test.

*Allied subjects are to be specified by the Department.

**10th mark sheet of CBSE where letter and point grades are given, the grade may be multiplied by 9.5
to get the equivalent percentage of marks.

Written Test for admission shall not be conducted where the numbers of applicants are less than the
sanctioned strength. In that case only eligibility criteria shall be considered.

Admission into any PG Course is Provisional. A candidate, once selected for provisional admission, will
have to produce his/her final mark sheet and CLC/TC/Migration Certificate (as provided by the

Publication of Merit List and Admission Dates

The first merit list, along with the admission / counselling dates of provisionally selected candidates, will
be notified on the notice boards of the university within 15 days tentatively of the completion of entrance
test of all subjects. Candidates are required to keep a watch on the university website regarding the merit
list and counselling/admission dates and appear for the same as per the schedule, with required
documents. All merit lists will be published in the notice boards of the university only.

COUNSELLING/ADMISSION.

The provisionally selected candidates (List to be published in the university Notice Board) will be required
to take admission on the scheduled date of admission. Under no circumstances extension of date of
admission shall be allowed. However, ‘five working days’ time will be given to the candidates for the
submission of transfer certificate/any other document required for admission. The candidate is required
to submit an undertaking in this regard. No further claim for admission will be entertained after the expiry
period.

The management reserves the right to select or reject the candidature of any applicants without showing any
reason thereof.

Guidelines for KISS-DU Entrance Examination (KISSEE)

a) Qualifying the Online entrance test shall not, ipso facto, entitle a candidate to get enrolment in
the department concerned where he/she intends to seek admission. It will be the responsibility
of the candidate to ensure his/her eligibility and fulfilment of such other conditions as may be
prescribed for admission in the rules and regulations of the university.
b) Any visually challenged candidate can avail himself/herself of the services of a writer during the
Entrance Examination.
c) The candidates shall be taking the test at their own risk and responsibility, subject to final
confirmation of their eligibility at the time of enrolment. The university shall, in no way, be
responsible if they are found to be ineligible later, leading to cancellation of their result or any
other consequence(s) emanating from the same.
d) Pattern of questions in entrance test for P.G. Courses
 There shall be 50 questions of 100 marks and all questions are compulsory. There
will be no negative marking for wrong response.

Each paper will be of 90-minutes duration with 50 multiple choice questions. Of



these, 30 questions will be set from Honours/Core papers, and 20 questions from
General English and General Knowledge.
e) The candidates need to show the original certificates, mark sheets and other necessary
documents at the time of document verification during admission. The admission shall be
cancelled at any point of time if the certificates/mark sheets/any other documents are found to
be forged/manipulated.

 Print out of the application form (printed application form after online submission) with a recent
passport size photograph affixed on it.
 Certificate of High School Examination or equivalent in support of age

The photocopies of all documents should be signed by the candidate as proof of self-attestation is to be

Admission into Ph.D. Programme


Ph.D. Course

Admission process of Ph.D. course shall govern the conduct of research and examination of thesis leading
to the award of the degree of “Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.)” of the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences.
(KISS Deemed to be University has been working in the innovative areas of knowledge particularly
interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary subjects with special reference to Tribal Culture, Philosophy, Art &
Crafts, Medicinal Systems, Indology, Heritage, Customary Law, Tribal Resources, Tribal Languages &
Literatures etc. It will be guaranteed by Ph. D. Regulation of KISS Deemed to be University and (to be
revised from time to times as per UGC Guidelines) (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of
Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations of UGC.

Eligibility for Admission

1. Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. course shall have a Master's degree or a professional
degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory
body, with at least 50% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale
(or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent
degree from a foreign educational Institution.
2. A relaxation of 5% of marks or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those
belonging to differently-abled categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission
from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September,
1991. The eligibility marks of 50% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading
system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible
based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.
3. The application form, available ‘ONLINE’ as well as obtainable from the Admission Cell of the
University, must be submitted along with the documents. Details are, however, available in the

4. Selection of a research scholar shall be based on the performance of the candidate in the
Entrance Test and Personal Interview at the University.
5. Candidates, qualified in any one or more National Level Examinations such as NET, JRF,
Lectureship or equivalent, may be exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test of the
University.
6. Candidates exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test of the University will have to,
however, face the Interview at the University.

Procedure for downloading the Admit Card

Admit Card will be available on the website for eligible candidates. Candidates should login and download
the same.

Procedure of Admission

1. As per UGC Letter No: F.1-2/2024(CPP-II) (C.No. 143903), Dated on 19th June, 2024,
admission of students in the HEIs to be done twice a year. However, KISS Deemed to be
University will follow this regulation only for admission to Ph.D. programme from the
academic session 2025-26. The admission to Ph.D. programme will be done twice a year in
July/August and January/February. For admission twice a year, the NET scores are valid for
one full year (as per UGC public notice No.F.4.-1 (UGC-NET Review
Committee)/2024(NET)/140648 Dated: March 27, 2024).
2. Candidates seeking admission to the course through the Entrance Examination shall be
selected on the basis of their performance both in the Entrance Examination followed by a
personal interview, which shall be conducted in the beginning of academic session.
3. 70% weightage will be given for test scores and 30% weightage for the interview for
admission to Ph.D. programmes.
4. There shall be two papers for the Entrance test. The questions for the written test shall
consist of two papers of two hours duration. The 1st paper (20 Marks) shall be purely
multiple choice and objective type questions covering General English, General Knowledge,
Quantitative Aptitude, Interpretation of Data and Research methodology. The 2nd paper (50
marks) shall be multiple choice questions from the subjects concerned.
5. A candidate has to secure a minimum of 50% marks in each paper of the Entrance test to
qualify to appear at the personal interview.
6. The JRF-qualified students are admitted into the Ph.D. programme based on an interview as
per the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of
Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2024. For students who qualify in Categories “Appointment as
Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.” and “Admission to Ph.D. only”, the Ph.D.
admission will be based on the combined merit of NET marks and the marks obtained in the
interview/viva voce. The marks obtained in the NET by the candidates in Categories
“Appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.” and “Admission to Ph.D. only”
will be valid for a period of one year for admission to Ph.D.
7. The personal interview will carry 30 marks.
8. The final merit list shall be prepared on the basis of performance of the candidate in the
Entrance Examination as well as personal interview.
9. All the Professors, faculty members two each from Associate Professors and Assistant
Professor on the basis of their seniority from the concerned Department/School will
constitute the board. The interview board will comprise of only eligible supervisors. The
minimum number of members on the board shall be three. Otherwise, members from the
concerned department on the basis of their seniority shall be nominated by the Dean of the
concerned school. The Head/Director of the Department/Institute in the rank of Professor/
Associate Professor will act as the Chairman of the Interview Board. Otherwise, the Dean of
the faculty will act as the Chairman.

10. The Examination Cell of the University will conduct the Entrance test and personal interview
respectively. The examination branch will send a list of qualified candidates to the concerned
department only without mentioning their secured marks.
11. The merit list of the candidates seeking admission through entrance test will be prepared by
the Examination Cell on the basis of total marks secured both in the Entrance test and
personal interview whereas for UGC-NET/CSIR-JRF qualified applicants it will be on only
the basis of marks secured in the personal interview. The Controller of Examination will
declare the result on receipt of the marks secured by candidates in the personal interview.
