Welcome to the English 4 Self-Learning Module on Writing News Report Using


Given Facts!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC)in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 4. All the


activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and
understand: Writing News Report Using Given Facts

PRETEST

Directions: Which among the given facts will be written first in


writing the news report? Write numbers 1- 4 on the line.

_____ Jake was very thankful to the dog that he decided to


bring it home.
_____ Stray dog saves the boy
_____ A stray dog that happened to be by the roadside
barked loudly at the car. It captured Jake’s attention that
he kept himself away from the car’s direction.
_____ A ten-year old boy, Jake was walking along Catalina
Street on July 30th this year when he did not notice the
speedy car was approaching towards him.

RECAP

In the previous lesson, you have learned the parts of the news
report: the headline which tells what the news is about, lead that
has the most important facts and is placed at the beginning of the
news report and body paragraph which has the less significant
details but the readers may want to know.

You have also learned how to write the lead of the news
report. In writing the lead, at least four of the Ws and one H
questions are answered.
Since you are done with the parts of the news report and
writing the lead, I hope that you are now ready to learn how to
write news report using the given facts.

LESSON

Let’s have an article taken from the newspaper.

Tourists stranded in Siargiao clean the shore


James Potter’s family from United Kingdom went to visit Siargao
for their annual vacation last February 20, 2020.
Unfortunately because of the pandemic, they were not able to go
home on their scheduled time.
Flights cancellation made the family stay longer in the island. They
spent their time worthy by cleaning the shores daily.

Tourists stranded in Siargao clean the shore is the headline of
the news report.

James Potter’s family from United Kingdom went to visit Siargao


for their annual vacation last February 20, 2020 is the lead of the
news report. It answers Ws and H questions as the following:
What: James Potter’s family visited and was stranded in Siargiao
Who: James Potter’s family
When: Last February 20, 2020
Where: Siargao
Why: For their annual vacation
How: They spent their time worthy by cleaning the shore.
As you have noticed, news report starts with the headline
which is the title of the news report and is followed by the lead
which is the most important facts placed at the beginning
paragraph which answers the following interrogative words: what,
who, when, where, why and how. The other less important details
are placed in the succeeding paragraphs.
It is written in an Inverted Pyramid Form.

Guided Practice
Read the given facts then arrange them as they are written in a
news report. Write the answer in the box.

- Children at home extended their gratitude making cards and
posters to the frontliners last April 2020.

- They sent encouraging letters, posters and messages to


nurses, doctors and other essential people during the
pandemic thru social media.

- Children make cards and posters for the frontliners

- They hoped frontliners would be strong enough and would


not give up fighting the situation.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1
Directions: Fill in the graphic organizer with news report using
the given facts.

o The residents living near the volcano were advised to leave


their properties immediately by the Local Government Unit
as the volcanic activity continued. Ashes spewed out from the
volcano endangered human and animals’ lives. Its
neighbouring cities and municipalities were also affected.

o Taal Volcano in Talisay, Batangas erupted last January this


year affecting more than a hundred families.

o Taal Volcano’s eruption affects hundred families

o Many extended help to the affected residents by donating


food, clothing and other necessities.

Activity 2

Directions: Arrange the given facts as they are written in a news
report. Write numbers 1-4 on the line, 1 as the first detail and 4
as the last.
A lighted candle caused fire that hit a residential area in

Manila on Monday evening, September 1 this year.
____ Lighted candle left open causes fire
____ No fatality reported but few families were left homeless. Local
Government Unit (LGU) assured support to the residents.
____ Due to frequent electricity loss, the residents used candles at
night. Unfortunately, one family left a lighted candle open causes
the blaze which struck houses along Santol Street, Barangay
Maligaya in Manila. The fire began at 9 p.m and reached second
alarm after 15 minutes, Bureau of Fire (BFP) said. BFP declared
fire out after 5 hours.

Activity 3

Directions: Using the given facts, make a news report. Write it on


the space provided below.
 Car accident in Cainta, no one hurt
 He assured full responsibility of the expenses caused by the
accident.
 Police Officer Marcelo Reyes who responded to the incident
found the drivers and their passengers safe. Both cars got
minor scratches.
 “I am not familiar with this place. I was about to turn right
when Mr. Sison’s car appeared that I lost control of my car,”
Mr. Andres admitted.
 A sport utility vehicle with the driver Mark Andres and a
minivan with Bong Sison crashed along the intersection at
Barangay San Juan, Cainta, Rizal, on August 31 this year.

News report should be able to answer the question wh, what,
when, where, why, and how.
The news should be able to answer at least four of these
questions. However, all news must answer who and what question.
In writing the news report, follow the inverted pyramid form.

Many lives are affected because of pandemic, yet people are trying
to help others by doing and donating what they can. People have
showed it in different ways. Even children who are at home with
their parents were able to send their support to those who are
fighting and keeping people safe, the frontliners.
We are still fighting over the pandemic. What do want to say
to the frontliners? Write a short message on the space
provided.

POSTTEST

Directions: Read the following facts then write on the space


provided a news report using them.

-He sacrificed his income for that day to feed the frontliners. “I
know how tired they are. This is the only way I thought to help
them for helping us,” said he.
- Joel Manasan, a 35 year old taho vendor offers hot taho to the
nurses, doctors, guards and police officers in front of the hospital
in Manila on May 28th 2020.
- He went home without any income but he was happy. He knew
his wife would understand what he did.
