Grade: XII

Time Allowed: Two hrs & 15 minutes.
(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper.
They must NOT start writing during this time).

This paper is divided into four sections – A, B, C and D.
Answer all questions.
Section – A consists of one question of one mark each.
Section – B consists of seven questions of two marks each.
Section – C consists of four questions of three marks each, and
Section – D consists of three questions of five marks each.
Internal choices have been provided in each in Section B, Section C and Section D.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ].

1. In Drosophila, white eye colour is recessive and X-linked, red eye colour is dominant.
A white eyed female is crossed with a red eyed male.

3. Define the terms:

b) Which produces pollinia.

7. Explain why:
a) Cortical reaction prevents polyspermy.

a) Person A has a genotype AABbCc, Person B has a genotype AAbbcc.
Person B has the fairer skin. Explain why. Write a definition of this type of inheritance.
b) A carrier mother and a normal father have a son with haemophilia. Explain this inheritance
using a diagram.

Question 3 [2]
a) State the characteristic feature of a pollen grain, anther and stigma of a plant suited
for pollination by wind.
b) Explain why pollen grains are well preserved as fossils.

Question 4 [2]
A typical angiosperm anther is bilobed and dithecous. Draw a labelled diagram to show
how the anther would look like in a transverse section.
OR
Draw a well labelled diagram of the L S of an anatropous ovule.

Question 5 [2]
Pollen grains are shed either at 2-celled stage or a 3-celled stage.
Trace the cell divisions that a microspore mother cell goes through to produce a 3-celled
pollen grain, naming the cells formed at the end of each cell division.

d) Write the phenotype of the child B.
e) What is the 6th amino acid in the (i) normal beta-haemoglobin chain (ii) mutated beta
haemoglobin chain

In the figure given below, parts A and B show the level of hormones which influence the
menstrual cycle. Study the figure and answer the questions that follow:

a) Name the organs which secrete the hormones represented in parts A and B.
b) What is the cause and effect of the LH surge seen just before day 14.
c) What changes due to rising oestrogen levels take place in the (a) ovary (b) uterus during
days 5 to 13? What is this phase called ?
d) Which of the hormones shown in the figure maintains the high oestrogen levels during the
same days as mentioned in the previous question?
e) Explain why there is an increase in progesterone levels after day 14?
f) What is the effect of the decreased level of the hormone’s oestrogen and progesterone by
day 29 of the menstrual cycle.
