Rag Doll scarf

By Crochet by Coraggio

Materials:
• 5mm (H) hook
• Worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Black,
bright yellow, light purple, teal, light blue, and maroon.
• Black puff paint (optional)
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
Abbreviations:
• Hdc= Half double crochet
• Ch= Chain
• St= Stitch
• FO= Fasten off
• **= Repeat between the **

Notes:
-Written in US terms
-Skill level: Intermediate
-Measurement: Scarf comes out about 69-70 inches (before fringe is added) and is about 7 1/2 inches wide. Feel free
to make your scarf longer or wider by adding or taking away stitches. Scarf is done in all Hdc. You are just changing
colors as you go. If you don’t want to use the same colors I use, please feel free to use any colors you like (see my
testers pictures on the last page for ideas).
-Puff paint is optional for the details on top of the scarf. If you don’t want to use puff paint you can embroider the
details instead. Puff paint likes to stick to itself and may create problems when dry. Please consider this when

weighing options for embellishments. Also, you may have to do multiple layers of paint to make sure it sticks. You
can find puff paint at any craft store.
-This pattern has a lot of color changes. If you don’t know how to do a color change I recommend going to YouTube
before starting this pattern and look up “Crochet color changing”. There are a lot of free videos explaining how.

R2.-R5. Hdc across. FO maroon at the end of R5.

Main part of scarf is done. Sew in all ends.

Fringe- (optional)
For fringe cut strips of maroon around 12 inches long. Cut about 52 strips (add more or less if you
like). Put 2 strips in each hdc st in the end of both maroon ends. Trim as needed.

Another way to do the fringe is to Ch 40, sl st to the end to the next st

on the scarf. Repeat this till the end. You will end up having about 22
“loops”.

Details
Supplies: 5mm hook, yellow and black yarn, scissors, sewing needle, or puff paint
(optional).

Note: If you are using puff paint, puff paint likes to stick to itself when dry. So, when you are done
making the scarf be careful when you fold the scarf. This could cause the puff paint to stick
together and peel when pulling apart. Take your time making the details puff paint can be messy.
Practice on a test piece if needed. If you don’t want to use puff paint you can use black yarn to

Page 4
embroider on the lines and swirls. Puff paint will normally need at least one full day to dry so
keep that in mind also.

With puff paint or black yarn:

1. Make multiple small horizontal lines on the teal patches.
2. Make swirls on the middle purple patch (make swirls different sizes and make them go
clock wise and counter clock wise).
3. If using puff paint dot lightly all over on both outer yellow patches. On middle yellow
patch make a checker pattern by making horizontal and vertical lines.
4. For the light blue patches add 3-4 small stitches by making 1 long line and 4 smaller lines
on top.

Stitching- Using black yarn.

-For large stitching: Ch 5, FO. Leave tail for sewing. Make 20 individual “stitches”, feel free to
make more if you would like more stitches.
Take stitches and sew between each color changes/patch in the scarf. Can position any way you
like. I made mine up and down, diagonal, and like a “X”.

Page 5
Circles- With black yarn.
X-Small (make 2).
1. Create a magic circle, put 6 sc into circle (6 sc). Sl st circle closed FO. Leave tail for sewing.

Small (make 2).

1. Create a magic circle, put 8 sc into circle (8 sc). Sl st circle
closed FO. Leave tail for sewing.

Medium (make 4).

1. Create a magic circle, put 6 sc into circle (6 sc).
2. 2 sc in each st around (12 sc). Sl st circle closed FO. Leave
tail for sewing.

Large (make 2).

1. Create a magic circle, put 6 sc into circle (6 sc).
2. 2 sc in each st around (12 sc).
3. *2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next*, repeat ** around (18 sc). Sl st circle closed FO. Leave tail for
sewing.

When embroidery/paint is dry, add circles randomly onto teal patches and sew. Put 1 x-small, 1
small, 2 medium and 1 large on each teal patch.

Patches- With yellow and black yarn. Ch 1 doesn’t count as a stitch.

Small yellow patches: Make 2.

Materials: yellow and black yarn, sewing needle.
R1. With yellow, ch 11, hdc into 2nd ch from hook and in each across (10
hdc). Ch1 and turn.
R2.-R5. Hdc across, ch 1 and turn. FO at the end of R5. Leave tail for
sewing.
Sew patch onto purple and black stripe patches slightly crooked. After
sewing on, use black yarn and “sew” around small yellow patch.

And that’s it! Your scarf is done!!
