COMPETENCY TITLE:

Differentiate metallic from non-metallic elements

READING SELECTION:
Metallic vs. Non-metallic Elements
Elements are the building blocks of all matter. They are classified into metallic and
non-metallic elements based on their physical and chemical properties.
Metallic elements, or metals, are usually found on the left and center of the
periodic table. They are known for being shiny, malleable (can be hammered into
shapes), and ductile (can be drawn into wires). Metals are good conductors of
electricity and heat. Most metals are solid at room temperature, except mercury,
which is a liquid. Examples of metals include iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), copper
(Cu), and gold (Au).
On the other hand, non-metallic elements, or non-metals, are found on the right
side of the periodic table. They are usually dull, brittle (easily broken), and poor
conductors of electricity and heat. Non-metals can be solid, liquid, or gas at room
temperature. Examples of non-metals include oxygen (O), carbon (C), sulfur (S),
and chlorine (Cl).
These differences help us understand how materials behave and how they are
used in our daily lives. Metals are often used in tools, buildings, and electronics,
while non-metals are essential in breathing (like oxygen), fuels, and cleaning
products.
