FOREWORD

Grammar Q

Had I had enough money, I would have bought a cell phone. ● ●

not A but B He came not to complain, but to help us. ● ●

관계부사는 「접속사+부사(구)」 역할을 하며 선행사에 따라 when, where, why, how가 쓰여요.

I remember the place. + I first met you at that place.

(→ I remember the place + at that place I first met you.)
→ I remember the place where I first met you.

I remember the place where I first met you.
= I remember the place at which I first met you.
I remember the place at where I first met you. (×)

B where, the time, the day, the year, the season 등 ‘시간’을 나타내는 선행사 뒤에 관계부사 when을 써요.
why
Let me know the time when she will arrive here.
◆ = at which

(← Let me know the time. + She will arrive here at that time.)

the place, the town, the house, the spot 등 ‘장소’를 나타내는 선행사 뒤에 관계부사 where를 써요.

That’s the house where I was born.

◆ = in which

(← That’s the house. + I was born in the house.)

There is no reason why it should be so expensive.

◆ = for which

(← There is no reason. + It should be so expensive for that reason.)

36 Chapter 10
C H AP TER
10

C
생략 선행사가 the time, the place, the reason처럼 일반적인 것일 때, 관계부사 when, where, why 자체에

Now is when he wants to speak to you. = the time when

his is where my grandfather’s house used to be.
T = the place where

He’s quite rude. That’s why I can’t get along with him. = the reason why

Spring is the time you want to be outdoors. = the time when

This is the place they got married. = the place where

Tell me the reason he was absent from school. = the reason why

how how 또는 the way 둘 중 하나만 가능

D how는 선행사 없이 쓰는 관계부사이므로 the way how로는 쓰지 않아요.
나, the way that, the way in which 형태로도 쓸 수 있답니다.

This is how I trained my dog.
= This is the way I trained my dog.
= This is the way that I trained my dog.
= the way in which

E

I know a girl who has iguanas as pets. has의 주어가 없음

The museum which we visited in London was huge.

This is the spot where I found your bag.

September is the month when I was born.

A

He has visited Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

The temple is old but beautiful.

We enjoyed singing songs and dancing together.

Did you see her in the morning or in the afternoon?

He turned off the light and (he) went to bed.

More 구의 종류
The cell phone on the table is mine.
I put the cell phone on the table.
